Grayling's rehabilitation programme to cost taxpayer £171m

A review by the National Audit Office (NAO) has said that failings by the Ministry of Justice in the part-privatisation of probation services will cost taxpayers at least £171m. The watchdog warns that the number of offenders returned to prison for breaching their licence conditions after serving short sentences has "skyrocketed" under Chris Grayling's Transforming Rehabilitation Programme. Oliver Lodge, Director of Justice at the NAO, said that the Ministry of Justice "set itself up to fail in how it reformed probation services". Report by Jonesia.
