The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved a presidential reference to the Supreme Court for a statutory inquiry into charges of sexual misconduct levelled by a law intern against retired Supreme Court judge and currently West Bengal human rights commission (WBHRC) chairman AK Ganguly. The Cabinet decision was welcomed by additional solicitor general (ASG) Indira Jaising — who has been demanding action against Ganguly — saying the former judge should not continue in his current post. West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee also welcomed the decision that is based on a representation she had submitted to President Pranab Mukherjee demanding Ganguly's removal as WBHRC chief.
