On Saturday June 30, 2019, Dave Rust will “wrap” a 39 year career as a CNN videographer. Over his illustrious career, he has covered stories in all 50 states and every continent in the world, during peace and war, in triumph and tragedy, and with both younger and older colleagues by his side, proud to work with this consummate pro.
Dave’s motivation for becoming a lifelong chronicler of historic events sprang from a moment on May 4, 1970 when he was an ROTC student at Kent State University in Ohio, when 4 students were killed and nine wounded by the Ohio National Guard during a protest against the bombing of Cambodia by the US Military.
“It became a big historical event,” he recalled, “and I saw the impact that the news had on the event…the impact that the coverage had on the world. I became attracted to that and wanted to be a part of it.”
Throughout his years of travel, Rust has accumulated 1000’s of incredible stories and one of a kind artifacts that he shares from his news assignments. From a piece of the Berlin Wall, to parts of a Gulf War missile, to a baseball autographed by Fidel Castro, Dave’s collection is now housed in his 2 homes, a storage facility, a museum in England and on display at CNN- NY.
As he approaches this momentous occasion, a day that he will also turn 70, Dave shares his stories and collection with OGTV, reflecting on what kept him focused on perfecting his craft through the years. “Journalists have a responsibility to convey the truth, to show situations absolutely the way that they are.” Wise words for our turbulent times where the truth has never seemed more elusive.
This video was Produced by Ron Forchheimer, Shot by Matt Ruggles, and Edited by Travis Stewart.
A Special Thanks to CNN for providing additional news footage of Dave’s amazing career.
