The charmingly lively Fashion Polka was composed in the summer of 1864 and it was premiered on 29th July in the Volksgarten that same year. Josef Strauss wrote a polka for the "beautiful people", for the elegant, distinguished public of his concerts. That follows for the choice of the title itself, for the english word "fashion" was then used in Vienna only in noble circles. The english meaning of the word fashion came somewhat later on the Danubian monarchy; in particular, it gave rise in the world of Vienna fashion to the word "fesch" (Chic). This polka was apparently well-liked by the public in Vienna during 1864 and the work remained on the programmes of the Strauss concerts for a long time thereafter.
