"May Delights". This cheerful, fast-paced polka conjures up anew the month of May with its array of lovely blooms. Josef Strauss prepared the work for a concert at the Neue Welt in Heitzing, which was certainly appropriated since there was a large contingent of spring flowers and tree blooms every year. But Josef did not wait to the concert in the Neue Welt, instead the work premiered on 21st May 1865 in the Vienna Volksgarten. The title page of the score shows a hiker, swinging a hat and strolling through a garden in full bloom. The piano score of the work was issued by 11th July 1865; this implies that the Verlag Spina publishers sought to make the polka available as quickly as possible, which gained immediate popularity among music lovers.
