St Benedict’s Prep in Newark, New Jersey is devoted to educating young men to help them fulfill their potential. In Part 2 of this 3 part episode of Random Acts of Cooking, Chef Plum is going to put the potential of seven students to a test that they have never faced - preparing, cooking, and presenting a celebratory meal in honor of their school teachers and mentors.

In Part 1 of this episode, Chef Plum was introduced to seven special senior boys from the school’s cooking program that were chosen for the opportunity of a lifetime to use the skills they learned this year to cook this masterpiece meal. Now the clock is ticking and each boy has to do his part to pull this off. Chef Plum has selected the menu, and with the help of friends Chef Dan and Chef Steve, they will team up with the students to prepare each of the selected dishes.

Michelle Tuorto, the boys Cooking Class Teacher, has nurtured the cooking abilities of the team all year so that they have a strong sense of accomplishment and feel ready to take on new challenges. The cookbook they wrote together, and each receives at the end of the semester, is their legacy - each student can take pride in all the recipes they prepared and to be confident in the skills they acquired. “If I had to encapsulate the overall philosophy of St Benedict’s, it is never do for a student what he can do for himself, “ she explains. “I think about that a lot with cooking because that’s a life skill that everyone should have, to be able to prepare meals for themselves.”

This special event is way beyond preparing dinner at home. Shrimp Cocktail, Spring Goose Pasta, Lamb Stew, and Strawberry Rhubarb Shortcake are the highlights of the menu so the Chefs and the boys split into teams to do the prep work. This is a great lesson on working together under pressure with the added bonus that the boys get a chance to learn some very unique kitchen techniques from their “new” mentors.

Watch and see how the Chefs and boys get caught up in the spirit and bond through the effort of preparing a masterpiece meal together. You will also hear some of the heartwarming stories each of the boys have to tell about the special guest each has invited to this dinner. Things are heating up …. check the stove and get those plates ready!
