Ramy Gafni did not start out with a burning desire to be in the beauty industry. While growing up in Queens, New York, his parents always encouraged him to choose his own path and find the thing that made him happy. Ramy thought that law school was where he would thrive but after a year he had doubts that this was his calling. On an impulse, he traveled to Australia to attend Beauty School and after the first day, he knew what his future would be.

That fateful decision lead to opportunities to travel the world as a freelance professional makeup artist. But his heart was always in New York. Upon returning to Manhattan, he talked his way into a job at the Barney’s beauty counter. From there, he landed the makeup director position at a swanky 5th Avenue salon. When, after two weeks on the job, the owners assigned him to take over the eyebrow clientele, Ramy agreed, even though he had only ever done his own brows. With the help of his co-workers who allowed him to practice his techniques on them, he began to make a name for himself as the Brow Guru.

Celebrity clients like Taylor Swift and Rihanna put Ramy on the map. He was written up in Vogue and other magazines, and TV appearances came next! Everyone wanted his expert brow advice. Everything was falling into place when, out of nowhere, Ramy was hit with a bombshell—at the age of 32, he was diagnosed with cancer.

Five months of chemo left him bald, bloated and pale. But as a makeup artist—he knew how to work on his own appearance - he soon began to fake a healthy glow. Clients said he looked fabulous! However, his salon manager did not agree and Ramy was fired from his job because he didn’t have the “same look” he was hired for.

Undeterred, Ramy decided to open his own salon. In 2005, One year after being diagnosed with cancer—Ramy had started his own cosmetic company which was immediately picked up by Bergdorf Goodman! That same year Ramy released his first book: “Ramy Gafni’s Beauty Therapy: The Ultimate Guide to Looking and Feeling Great While Living with Cancer”. His goal was to help all those suffering from cancer look and feel their best. “Let something good come out of this, let me share this knowledge,” he explained. “For someone who is not feeling well and going through cancer, you need quick fixes that are really effective and simple. I’m proud of it. If I do nothing else in my life I did this one great thing that will help people.”

This cancer battle wasn’t the only hurdle Ramy had to overcome. Watch as Ramy is faced with other life altering challenges and see how his positive attitude enables him to keep moving forward while still giving back.
