In Valmiki Ramayana, there is reference to Sita's soul getting salvation by giving Sita a pindadaan. During exile Lord Rama, Lakshmana and Sita reached Gaya Dham to perform Shraddha during Pitru Paksha. There Rama and Lakshman walked towards the city to collect the necessary materials for Shraddha Karma. It was there in the afternoon. Pindadan's kutp was getting out of time and Sita ji's anxiety was increasing. Then Dasharatha's soul demanded Pinddaan. In front of Gaya ji, Sita ji fell into confusion on the Falgu river. He gave a pindadan for the late king Dasaratha by making a pint of sand along the Phalgu river with vatavriksha, ketaki flowers and cow as a witness. In a little while Lord Rama and Lakshmana returned, they said that as time passed, I gave myself the pindadan . Rama sought proof from Sita for how Pindadan could be done without material. Then Sita ji said that the sand of this river Falgu, ketaki flowers, cow and vatavriksha can testify to the shraddharama done by me. But the trio of Falgu river, cow and ketki flowers retracted from this. Only Vatavriksha said the right thing. Then Sita ji meditated on Dasharatha and prayed to witness from her. Dasharatha ji accepted Sita ji's prayer and announced that at the last moment Sita gave me the pindadan. Rama was convinced on this, but on lying by the three witnesses, Sita ji cursed them with anger that the river Falgu - Ja tu will remain only the river named, you will not have water. Due to this, the Falgu river remains dry in Gaya even today.
