Nail art has seen a quiet, but unexpected growth in the last few years. “Pink slippers” and French tips have been replaced by geometric designs and runway-inspired experimentation. For thousands, getting their nails done had become a monthly self-care ritual, leading to an emergence of a new kind of nail salon. A place whose unique designs, luxury treatments are part of an uncompromisable monthly budget, assuming you can get an appointment.

As the coronavirus shut down the majority of service focused businesses, thousands of nail salons and nail artists have been cut off from customers. Bustle spoke with Jane Hong, the CEO of NYC staple Paintbox Nails. Paintbox has made a rapid pivot from a brick-and-mortar business to a nationally distributed product. Jane gave insight on why self-care rituals are as important as ever and what the nail art world might look like after COVID-19.
