00:00Now, Autolite and its 98,000 dealers everywhere present Suspense.
00:30Tonight's timely story is the dramatic report of a man's desperate attempt to escape the
00:59desperate race for freedom. Of necessity, all names used are fictitious.
01:29Misha? Misha?
02:29I'm Romero. You're the code clerk. I saw him on the way to the ball.
02:36The ambassador wants the message book. Do you know if it's ready?
02:45No, I don't. I was sent down here for a file. It seems to be ready.
02:50Will you tell Misha I've taken the book when he returns?
02:53Yes, I'll tell him.
02:59I'll tell him.
03:29Misha, Comrade Zapotin was just here. He took the message book.
03:59Misha!
04:28Meroz!
04:30Meroz, what are you doing home at this hour?
04:32Yvonne, would you do Papa a favor? Would you run down to the corner and get him a package of cigarettes?
04:38Now, quickly, Yvonne. And come right back. Here, buy some candy for yourself.
04:47Meroz, what is it? Meroz!
04:49Meroz!
04:51Rita, for how long have we wanted to laugh and sing and play when we wanted to and how we wanted to?
04:58Like the people around us here in Mexico. For how long have we wanted to escape?
05:03Meroz, I don't understand.
05:05No. Months we should have done it. Months ago. Now we can no longer wait. We can no longer plan.
05:13Meroz, what's happened?
05:14This morning a message came from Moscow.
05:26Special agents inform us Meroz Leko no longer a good security risk.
05:32Since he has become gregarious, made so many friends among the Mexicans and the Americans.
05:38You will return him and his family at once to Russia.
05:42Where the necessary steps will be taken.
05:45Do they know about this at the embassy?
05:48Perhaps by now.
05:53The necessary steps?
05:55Yes. Exile. Death.
06:03I'm going to pack our things and take the child away.
06:06No, no. I've known flight when death was close. I'll not have you or the child.
06:10I have a plan.
06:14For over a year now I've had this plan. Now listen to me.
06:18I've stolen certain papers from the embassy.
06:21Documents of theirs which may help us buy back our lives. Now come here.
06:27Buy back our lives from whom? Who will want to deal with us now?
06:32Amelia, please listen to me.
06:35I'm listening.
06:36You're to take these papers and put them in my briefcase.
06:39You're to take the boy. You're to go to the Plaza Socolow.
06:43The bench near the Great Fountain.
06:45You're there so you can get sunshine for the boy if anyone asks.
06:49You're to keep the briefcase hidden until I come to you. Do you understand?
06:53Yes, I understand.
06:55Shall I take any calls?
06:57No, no. There won't be time.
06:59By now the coding clerk has returned.
07:01Comrade Zapotin knows.
07:03Oh, Meryl.
07:07Now hurry, dear. Hurry.
07:17Here you are, Papa.
07:19Oh, thank you, Yvonne.
07:21Yvonne, you're to go put your clothes on.
07:25And you're to do as your mother says.
07:27Papa, is something wrong?
07:29You have never been home in the morning like this.
07:33Yvonne, go with your mother.
07:36Come, Yvonne. We have to change your dress.
07:39You come inside with me.
07:46Out through the kitchen.
07:48But Meryl.
07:49What did I say?
07:51Oh, it's all right, Senor Cardona.
07:53Hurry.
07:55Oh, it's all right, Senor Cardona.
07:58Please, hurry. I'll let him in.
08:01Oh, Senor Cardona.
08:03Senor Alejo, I am surprised.
08:05It was not you I expected to find at this hour.
08:08Miss, come in.
08:12The day is beautiful, and in the streets there is Fiesta.
08:15And I thought to myself, my neighbor, the Senor Alejo, would care for Fiesta.
08:19She and the Pequeños. So I come to offer myself as a guide, as a pointer out of things.
08:23But now I find you mysteriously home from the embassy.
08:26Have they given you a holiday?
08:27No.
08:28Ah, the Senor and the Pequeños.
08:30A very good evening to you both.
08:32Alejo, we don't have much time. You'd better hurry.
08:34I know that.
08:36You will forgive us, Senor Cardona.
08:38Oh.
08:39You're going to the Fiesta. I will go with you.
08:43Senor, you have been our friend now for many months.
08:46I think you should know that my family and I have been ordered back to Moscow.
08:50Ah, you have received a promotion.
08:52We have many things to do, Senor.
08:54We must go, Ivan.
08:56You will excuse us.
08:58But of course.
09:08I cannot tell you how sorry I am to see that you are leaving.
09:13But for a promotion.
09:15We will have a party before you go.
09:17Oh, you must excuse me, Senor.
09:18But there are so many last moments.
09:20Of course, of course.
09:22I've chosen a very bad time.
09:24Perhaps tonight.
09:26Yes, tonight.
09:27Good, good.
09:28Buenos dias.
09:29Buenos dias.
09:45I could not have misled you, comrade.
09:48It's on the desk.
09:49I was to paste it up when I returned from lunch.
09:52And the message was about Medos?
09:54Yes, comrade. It's a return to Russia.
09:55You have the original of the message.
09:56Decode it again.
10:00Connect me at once with the ambassador.
10:19Hello.
10:34Oh, yes, yes.
10:36You perhaps remember me?
10:38Natasha at the Russian Embassy.
10:40I remember you well.
10:41It's very nice of you to see me, sir.
10:43What do you wish of me?
10:46I have a story for you.
10:48With secret documents.
10:50Something I'm sure you'll be interested in.
10:54The newspaper must go to press for the late evening editions.
10:56And I have many things to attain.
10:58Please, please.
10:59It's a matter of life of my family.
11:01So?
11:03Miguel.
11:05Take these to the mail that quickly, huh?
11:07All right.
11:09These documents show that a conspiracy exists
11:11between certain members of your country and mine.
11:13Now, I've stolen them from the embassy.
11:15They're yours if you want them.
11:16And the price, senor?
11:18I told you, my life, my wife, my child, our lives.
11:21If you'll just get us aside.
11:23To become citizens of Mexico.
11:26So?
11:29May we go and talk in your office?
11:32If you like.
11:40Where are the papers?
11:42My wife has them.
11:43She's waiting for me.
11:44Where?
11:46Well, she's waiting for me.
11:48The boys will.
11:49I'll go to her.
11:50I'll get the papers and bring them to you.
11:52If you take...
11:55You people.
11:57Intrigue.
11:58Drama.
12:00Promises of violence.
12:01Revelations.
12:03Easy words of your mouth.
12:05Lie.
12:06Death.
12:08Like the last time you came to me, senor Leco.
12:10What?
12:11Not a year ago.
12:13You were here.
12:14And then you had another thing to say.
12:16Oh, please.
12:17Listening of Dr. Ramiro.
12:19Remember?
12:21The professor of electronics at the University of Mexico.
12:24He too was in conspiracy, you told me then.
12:28But it was false.
12:30A savage lie.
12:32You wish to relieve us only of his knowledge of nuclear fission.
12:36That was a lie.
12:38But that was when I first came here to Mexico.
12:40Before I had seen your people.
12:41Before I had known what freedom meant.
12:42I was under orders to say that.
12:44That was a lie.
12:45But this...
12:46What is this?
12:48This is of a fable, senor.
12:50The story of the boy.
12:52The boy who cries wolf once too often.
12:54Believe me.
12:56You've got to believe me.
12:58Not I, senor Leco.
13:00I have more wisdom of you now.
13:02Go.
13:03Run in the streets.
13:05Cry wolf to the mosques of the fiesta.
13:07Perhaps one of them will believe.
13:09Not I.
13:10One of them will believe.
13:12Not I.
13:13Get out.
13:20I told you, my wife and my child.
13:22Go, go, cry wolf.
13:24Cry wolf.
13:35Hello, this is Rex Marshall speaking for AutoLite.
13:37We'll get back to our suspense story in just a moment.
13:40Now that we've inherited some more or less nice summer weather.
13:43I guess everybody's feeling a lot better than they did in the drizzly days of spring.
13:47That is everybody but that poor little character, Lester the limousine.
13:51Oh, he's not feeling better.
13:53He's feeling awful.
13:55In traffic, Lester is always the last one to get away.
13:58And it's a real struggle for him to get up the hill.
14:01And as for gasoline.
14:03Oh, that Lester.
14:05He really burns up the dough.
14:11Well, I hope your car isn't as badly off as Lester the limousine.
14:14But if it isn't giving you top performance.
14:16Maybe your spark plugs are at fault.
14:18Because, you know, if they're not right, your car's performance will really suffer.
14:22So that's why it's a very good idea to have your plugs checked regularly by your AutoLite spark plug dealer.
14:27Now, if you need replacements, he'll recommend a set of ignition engineered AutoLite spark plugs.
14:32Like, for example, the famous AutoLite Resistor.
14:35The greatest advance in spark plugs for automotive use in the past 20 years.
14:40Let me show you how it works.
14:42You see, every spark is divided into two parts, like little Sparky here.
14:46There's the advanced portion, which is most effective in igniting the fuel mixture.
14:50And behind is the less effective tail end that damages by burning away spark plug electrodes.
14:56But watch what the AutoLite Resistor does.
14:58It cuts off most of the less effective portion of the spark.
15:01But allows most of the effective portion to pass through.
15:03Well, now all this means that the AutoLite Resistor spark plug gives double spark plug life, smoother engine performance, and quick start.
15:19Well, you know, this amazing Double Life spark plug is just one of a complete line of ignition engineered AutoLite spark plugs for every use.
15:27So why don't you take my advice and visit your AutoLite spark plug dealer soon.
15:30You can find him wherever you see this sign.
15:33Or simply call Western Union by number and ask for Operator 25.
15:38That's right, call me, Operator 25.
15:42And I'll quickly tell you the location of your nearest AutoLite spark plug dealer.
15:46That's Western Union, Operator 25.
15:50And remember, from bumper to tail light, you're always right with AutoLite.
16:00And now, the second act of The Man Who Cried Wolf, starring Martin Brooks.
16:31Back off.
16:36Back off.
17:01You have a story, senor, but no documents.
17:04You say your wife has documents, but you do not.
17:08Look out.
17:10Ah, here we are.
17:12Bearers, look out.
17:14The Department of Justice has a dossier on you, I was sure of it.
17:20In 1925, a man was killed in a car accident.
17:24The Department of Justice has a dossier on you, I was sure of it.
17:30In 1952, you reported that a certain Professor Ramirez of the University erroneously reported, I must say.
17:38It was a lie then, I was under orders to say that.
17:41And today, no lies, senor?
17:44No, I was under orders to say that then, but this is different.
17:47You've got to believe me, I'm telling you the truth.
17:50My life is in danger.
17:51Then you wish protection.
17:54Yes, for my wife, my child.
17:57We're people without a country.
18:00We do not want to go back to Russia.
18:02Senor, you're a Russian national.
18:04Yes.
18:05Of the embassy.
18:07Has your embassy been informed of this thing that's about to happen to your life?
18:10Don't you understand? They're the very people that are trying to kill me.
18:13I understand only that you and your embassy want to endeavor to involve my country with your life.
18:22Get me the Russian embassy, please.
18:24Don't!
18:26Why don't you people stop meddling in your lives?
18:28The Russian embassy.
18:52Senor Kadoba!
18:54Senor Kadoba!
18:56It was good of you to come.
18:58You gave me your message, and listen to me.
19:00I was not completely honest with you this morning.
19:03When I told you we would fall back to Russia, it was true, but not for a promotion.
19:08I have been too friendly with the Mexicans and the Americans.
19:12My country's respect for you has been ruined.
19:15I have been too friendly with the Mexicans and the Americans.
19:17My country's respect for you has been ruined.
19:19But I can no longer be loyal to the Soviet Union.
19:29I have some papers and documents that prove that the conspiracy exists.
19:34They contend that your government and mine.
19:37I have those papers.
19:39Did you?
19:40No.
19:41No, my wife has.
19:47He's waiting for me in the closet.
19:49I tried to sell these documents to the newspapers in the Department of Justice.
19:53Sell them for what?
19:54For my life.
19:55My life?
19:56My child.
19:57But they would not believe me.
19:58Newspapers in the Department of Justice?
20:00Yes, they remember the Ramiro matter and they would not believe me.
20:03I have the idea.
20:04What?
20:05I have a friend in the police.
20:07I could tell him of you and perhaps he could help.
20:09Oh, but maybe you don't care for the police, Senor Leopold.
20:12Go to him.
20:13Tell him.
20:14I have but to phone him.
20:15I'll meet him at the cafe.
20:26Senor, to answer the police, the names of the members of your embassy are known.
20:32Añors.
20:34I will not concede the fact that I have knowledge in tricks I played with those last years.
20:39The mother of the professor at the university.
20:41This is the truth.
20:42What I tell you now is the truth.
20:44Now, please hurry.
20:45The men from the embassy...
20:46Why should I believe you, Senor?
20:47I saw his wife, Lilia, leave.
20:49I'll take you to her.
20:50I will not be made a fool of.
20:52But I'll give you the papers.
20:53Leave him there, Senor.
20:57Very well.
20:59You will go to your wife.
21:14Oh, he won't be able to get through.
21:32We had better go around the other side of the square.
21:34But that is blocked too.
21:35My wife should be just over there by the fountain.
21:37I bet I can see her from here.
21:39Yes, there she is, my boy.
21:41Lilia!
21:42Lilia!
21:45I'm supposed to...
21:53My friend here and I will take you to your wife.
21:57Come on, my dear.
21:59Lilia.
22:14Come on, let's go.
22:15Come on.
22:26Mama, they're coming.
22:30Come on.
22:45People!
22:46People, listen to me!
22:47You're fools!
22:48Savages!
22:49You think you're in the penitentiary.
22:51My friends think you're being exploited by your masters.
22:53You're a killer!
22:54You're a killer!
22:56Killer!
22:57You think you have any faith.
22:59I want my friend.
23:00I want him.
23:01We'll give you the world.
23:02He's a communer.
23:03I'll give you the world, or we'll be committed.
23:05Look to us.
23:10Yes, yes, minus Slakow.
23:13Yes.
23:14Showing communist propaganda to the clouds.
23:17But he says he has papers.
23:20Cardozo and the other one are in jail.
23:22and the other one are in jail.
23:23Quite obviously, it's a fight.
23:26But peace of mind, Colonel.
23:29I'll ask you, if you will.
23:33Please, senor, if I can get to my wife
23:34who has the papers, you'll understand.
23:36All we understand is you were fighting a crowd
23:38with communist propaganda.
23:40But I told you, I found that those men
23:42were in league with the communists, Pepe and Cardozo.
23:46And the only way I could get rid of them
23:47was to have the crowd attack us.
23:50Oh, Meryl, look.
23:52The insidious Wi-Fi papers, it's true.
23:54I know papers which prove a communist plot
23:57against the government.
23:59The same old story like a twine will you learn.
24:02But it's the truth.
24:03Those men were going to help me.
24:05We were going to my wife.
24:08Lillia.
24:09Lillia.
24:10Lillia.
24:11Oh, Meryl.
24:12Oh, sir, I heard you shouting in the street,
24:14and I saw the fight, but they wouldn't let me in.
24:16Lillia, papers for papers.
24:18Yes, sir.
24:19Read these.
24:22You would not believe me, but you'll believe those.
24:25Now, please, sir, you must help us.
24:28Without your help, we're lost.
24:30They'll send us back to our death.
24:33We want to stay in this country,
24:35to become citizens of Mexico.
24:42Mrs. Rivera, get me the central office.
24:45Mrs. Rivera, get me the central office.
24:48Rivera, do you make the necessary arrangements
24:51to give asylum to two Russian nationalists,

24:58Our little boy.
