Janmashtami is a major festival of Hinduism. On this day, Krishna devotees keep fast. Different types of dishes are made in homes and temples are decorated all over the country. There is also a tradition of offering 56 bhog to Lord Krishna on this day. When this tradition started, it cannot be said with some claim. This tradition has been going on for ages. Religious belief is that Lord Krishna is pleased with fifty six bhog and all the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled.According to the popular legend about 56 bhog, mother Yashoda used to provide food to Lord Krishna eight times a day, i.e. eight times. Once, when Indra rained heavily on Brajwasi, Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan mountain on his finger to protect the Brajwasis. Shri Krishna kept the Govardhan mountain on his finger for seven days, during which the people of Braj and animal birds took shelter under Govardhan. Seven days later, when the rains ceased, all of them came out of the lowliness of Govardhan.
