Jawaharlal Nehru in Today’s Context– Aditya Mukherjee

Jawaharlal Nehru in Today’s Context in English language is part of the Reimagining India Public Video Lecture Series.

Aditya Mukherjee is a Prof. of Contemporary History (Retired), Jawaharlal Nehru University

Prof. Mukherjee discusses the ideals of independence, sovereignty, democracy, secularism, scientific temper, and self-reliance upheld by Gandhi and Nehru. Nehru considered civil liberties, criticism, and freedom for a democratic India as paramount, reflected in the inclusion of individuals with opposite ideologies in his cabinet. Prof. Mukherjee discusses the deteriorating regression of these values over time and talks of the dangers of fascism. Under the rule of the BJP government, India has downgraded to an electoral autocracy given the state-sanctioned communalism, decrease in civil liberties and rights, apparent regression of scientific temper, and diminishing freedom of speech and press. Prof. Mukherjee talks of the significance of political democracy accompanied by economic democracy to tackle the destruction of India’s democratic fabric.

‘Reimagining India’ hopes to start a conversation to explore the contours of a society that is more just, equal and aligned to the Constitutional values of liberty and fraternity. Over the next two months, beginning from Oct 2, 2021 , 50 lectures on relevant themes by leading public intellectuals and political leaders will provide an alternate vision for the country.
