AT the age of 15, Jay Walker went blind in a matter of hours. Now 18 years old, Jay’s condition is still a mystery to doctors. In 2017, Jay lost her sense of taste and smell after experiencing bizarre swelling symptoms in her face, then, in December 2018, Jay suffered swelling again. However, this time the pressures in Jay’s eyes were immense. Jay told Truly: “Generally the pressures are supposed to be between 12 and 22, mine was at 84.” Just four hours after the swelling began, Jay went blind and during her hospital stay, was told this was not temporary. Jay said: “They told me and I freaked out for a little bit and I just screamed - gut-wrenching, bloodcurdling scream - and then I was done. I was like ‘okay, I’m over it'.” Doctors have never been able to diagnose Jay’s condition. Jay’s life changed drastically and she is determined to keep moving forward. Jay’s mom Kendyll said: “She stands up for herself a lot more than she used to so I think her confidence has grown, her independence is growing, her zest for life is growing.” Now a college student, Jay’s ambitions are to write a book about her experiences, start a podcast and advocate for herself and others. Jay said: “I know how I want to feel and I know that I want to be happy and I know that I want to feel successful. And I want to feel like I've fulfilled something. And that I've made a difference in whether it be a million people or one.”
