Deeply in debt, Otho knew there were only two paths open to him: become Roman Emperor or die trying.
Galba won the civil war and became emperor. In fact, he became the richest man to ever be Roman Emperor. Nero committed suicide before anyone could capture and execute him. However, Galba was old and childless. Otho and many others believed he would be named heir. This was not the case. Galba named another man, Piso, as his heir.
This was not Otho’s plan. So much so in fact that he had racked up debts with the anticipation of inheriting the imperial title and Galba’s fortune.
