A huge meteor lit up the night sky as it hurtled above two friends as they stepped outside for a late-night cigarette. The UK Meteor Network said they had received more than 100 sightings of the fireball as it streaked across the sky on Monday (16/5) night. Doorbell footage posted on Facebook shows two friends puffing on ciggies on a driveway at 9.45pm in Leamington Spa, Warks. As they turn away to blow the smoke out, the dazzling space rock is seen flying behind them. One of the householders suddenly spots the meteor and points excitedly to the sky and says: “What on earth was that?” Other residents also reported seeing the fireball which is the second one to be spotted in the Midlands in recent days. Allyson Cleaver said: “I thought it was lightning!” Sam Copeland wrote: “I was on the bypass from Coventry to Leamington and you could see it over the road. “It was like the ending of the Deep Impact movie, actually pretty scary. I saw a few drivers actually swerve when it appeared overhead.” Graham Dixon saw it near Coventry. He said: "It looked pretty big and had a long white tail. You could almost see bits of rocks coming off it, it was amazing."
