India to get its first woman tribal President?

President Ram Nath Kovind’s term will end on July 24 and India is all set to elect its 15th president today. The question is if India is all set to get its first woman tribal President?

NDA candidate Droupadi Murmu is a tribal leader, is set to face off against former Union minister Yashwant Sinha, the Opposition’s nominee.

A Santhal tribal by birth and a resident of Odisha, Droupadi Murmu quit a secure government job to successfully contest a councilor’s election in 1997. The same year, she was appointed vice-president of the BJP’s Scheduled Tribes wing.

With the support of regional parties such as BJD, YSRCP, BSP, AIADMK, TDP, JD(S), Shiromani Akali Dal, Shiv Sena and JMM, Droupadi Murmu's vote share is likely to reach nearly two-thirds, making her a shoo-in for the top constitutional post.
