Mountain Rescue - Episode 2 Dangerous Nighttime Air Rescue

After a brief explanation about the different helicopters that work in the valley, a look at the pilots who fly them and an overview of the dangers of flying at high altitude, the “secouristes” of the PGHM fly off to deal with two climbers who have found themselves stuck halfway up a 1000 meter rock face. The only way to retrieve the victims is by winching a rescuer down by cable from the helicopter, but the operation means the helicopter’s rotor will come dangerously close to the cliff face. Next, they fly off to deal with an off-piste skier who has followed a path with no exit but a 500 meter abyss ahead of him and now way of going back. Lastly, as darkness descends, they race against time to rescue a group of exhausted trekkers who are unable to finish their descent of the glacier, meaning a rare and dangerous nighttime air rescue.

Towering above the mountains of the Alps, Mont Blanc is possessed of a spectacular natural beauty. But it also has a darker side, exerting a lethal attraction for thrill seekers, extreme skiers and obsessed climbers from all over the world. They throw themselves against the mountain’s steep slopes, treacherous glaciers and vertiginous cliffs in a bid to beat this most formidable of natural adversaries.

When they fail, the consequences can be deadly. The only thing standing between them and a certain death is the helicopter rescue squad of the PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie du Haute Montagne), an elite squad of Alpine Gendarmes trained to secure one of the world’s deadliest peaks. Their exploits are the chronicled MOUNTAIN RESCUE!
