Mountain Rescue - Episode 3 High Altitude Emergency
Each flight of the PGHM includes on its team a doctor trained in high altitude emergency medicine. This episode follows one of the most experienced medics, Sonia, as she makes her deadly daily rounds with the rescue crew. The first call is a skier who has become injured in a fall in one of the steepest and most remote couloirs in the valley, an operation complicated by high winds and the ever present risk of avalanche. Meanwhile, other members of the PGHM conduct a terrestrial search for a skier who has gotten lost in the forest, and who will die of exposure if they can’t find him by nightfall. Sonia is called in to look at a skier who has run into a tree at full speed but seems alright, but her examination reveals that he has suffered a severe concussion and risks going into convulsions and a coma. And when a mountain ledge gives way, a skier is buried in an avalanche, and Sonia and the crew are flown in to dig him out and try to revive him.
Towering above the mountains of the Alps, Mont Blanc is possessed of a spectacular natural beauty. But it also has a darker side, exerting a lethal attraction for thrill seekers, extreme skiers and obsessed climbers from all over the world. They throw themselves against the mountain’s steep slopes, treacherous glaciers and vertiginous cliffs in a bid to beat this most formidable of natural adversaries.
When they fail, the consequences can be deadly. The only thing standing between them and a certain death is the helicopter rescue squad of the PGHM (Peloton de Gendarmerie du Haute Montagne), an elite squad of Alpine Gendarmes trained to secure one of the world’s deadliest peaks. Their exploits are the chronicled MOUNTAIN RESCUE!
