Billy Graham: Branham's "Lot" Down in Sodom

Billy Graham was a popular revivalist in the United States until his death in 2018, referred to by many as “America’s Pastor”. His crusades began in 1947, one of the many different years that Branham claimed his own “gift of healing” came, and Branham taught that Billy Graham went “down into Sodom” to symbolically link Graham to the Biblical Lot to Branham’s “Abraham” headed to the “promised land”.

In 1952 as William Branham’s popularity was in strong decline and Joseph Mattsson-Boze of Chicago was working to lift Branham up, Boze tried to connect William Branham to Billy Graham in a personal meeting with Graham. Interestingly, Billy Graham spoke at Peoples Temple in July of 1955, shortly before Jim Jones became a leader in Branham’s “Message” cult of personality.

After Jones and hundreds of other ministers parted ways with Branham over Branham’s promotion of the Christian Identity doctrine he branded “Serpent’s Seed”, Branham praised Billy Graham for Graham’s sermon about “Wise Man’s Filter” against the Viceroy cigarettes advertisement. Branham later claimed that the “Holy Spirit” told him about the advertisement while hunting and pretended that he was not aware of the advertisement until the “Spirit” told him to pick up a pack of cigarettes. He plagiarized Graham’s sermon under the title “Thinking Man’s Filter”.

When Branham said that Graham “went down into Sodom”, it appears that he was referring to people with black skin. Graham was recognized for breaking down racial barriers and removing segregation ropes in his 1952 Jackson, Mississippi crusades. Branham supported segregation and denounced Civil Rights Leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr. for their work to remove racial barriers.
