Video shows a meteor travelling across the sky over Bristol last night (January 9). The Met Office confirmed the meteor was reported at around 8pm and asked for people to share footage of it.
People took to social media to post footage they’d captured of the rare event - many on video doorbells or home CCTV systems. One skygazer in Bristol captured the meteor on a Nest CCTV camera at around 8.01pm - as it headed east.
A woman, from Chippenham in Wiltshire, said: “I couldn’t believe it. I was standing outside waiting for a lift to work when the sky lit up. A bright orange ball flew through the sky - it was incredible.”
Another person said: “It wasn’t just a shooting star, it was orange in the sky!!”
One Twitter said they saw a “huge white ball, red surround, long trail of shooting stars type tail”, adding that she “couldn’t believe my eyes. Beautiful.”
Meteors are pieces of debris which enter Earth’s atmosphere at high speed and vaporise, causing the streaks of light we see across the sky.
