"Le Mura Di Malapaga" [Au dela des grilles] (Ita-Fra, 1949) by Rene' Clement, with Jean Gabin, Isa Miranda, Andrea Checchi, Ave Ninchi.

"The Walls of Malapaga" ["Le Mura di Malapaga"] is also known by the English title "The Flesh is Weak". This is the third movie of Rene' Clement and is a masterpiece of post-war neorealism and melodrama with the splendid performances of Isa Miranda and Jean Gabin. The movie won the Prizes for best acting (of Isa Miranda) and best direction at the Cannes Festival of 1949. In 1951 the movie also won the Oscar for best foreign movie. While the theatrical scenes were made in Cinecitta', the external scenes were shot in the dilapidated streets of post-war Genoa (the real settings of the story), the "carruggi" of the neighbourhood of Malapaga, thus becoming a filmic document of that area. Gabin is dubbed in the Italian version by the great Emilio Cigoli and Isa Miranda, who recites with her hoarse, slightly accented voice. Jean Aurenche, Pierre Bost, Cesare Zavattini, Suso Cecchi D'Amico and Alfredo Guarini participated in the screenplay.

This film is a recording from the channel La7 already available on the Internet, then edited and improved by me in terms of contrast and luminance. There is already a second Italian copy on YouTube with no TV watermark. This version was previously published on YouTube but is now offered with English subtitles for international viewers. The movie is commercially published in France and Italy. The platform used for publication will respect the copyrights and may not allow viewing in the copyrighted countries.
