00:42 Mexico has been under pressure from Washington to do more to stop migrants from crossing
00:46 the border.
00:48 An immigration commissioner who previously headed the country's prisons was appointed
00:52 in 2019.
00:53 And he's remained in his role despite pressure for him to step aside after 40 migrants died
00:58 in last month's fire.
01:01 On Tuesday, the commissioner was arraigned on charges he failed to protect those in his
01:05 custody.
01:06 "The judge dismissed the request to remove the commissioner from his position and bar
01:11 him from leaving the country because his role requires him to meet with authorities, especially
01:15 from the United States."
01:17 Several thousand migrants have begun their journey from Mexico's southern border with
01:21 the aim of reaching the United States.
01:24 The caravan's treacherous journey starting as US authorities get set to end pandemic-era
01:29 restrictions on asylum in May.
