00:00 The Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever has a mortality rate of up to 40%.
00:05 It's most commonly spread by ticks and livestock,
00:08 although there are also rare cases of human-to-human transmission.
00:12 Health authorities here in Senegal have initiated an emergency protocol
00:16 with a dedicated team following this latest outbreak around the clock.
00:20 There are currently at least 83 people under observation for potential symptoms.
00:27 The head of diseases monitoring here in Senegal told me over the phone
00:32 that those most at risk are herders
00:34 and people otherwise working with livestock and meat in slaughterhouses, for example.
00:40 He said although there was at least one recorded death over the weekend,
00:44 there's no reason to be alarmed just yet
00:46 because Senegal is very used to dealing with this kind of outbreak.
00:51 There's only one known vaccine against Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever,
00:55 but it's not available here in Senegal.
00:57 It's only used on a small scale in certain parts of Eastern Europe.
