Storyline: Jan Morrow, a young interior designer, has a "duplex" telephone connected to that of Brad Allen, a songwriter who spends long hours in telephone conversations with his many friends. Naturally the two, even without knowing each other, detest each other, since it seems to each that the other is abusing the common telephone system, exceeding the limits imposed by urbanity. Brad allows himself to call Jan Morrow, addressing her with irreverent epithets. When the composer meets Jan in a nightclub and hears her called by her name and surname by an acquaintance of hers, he is fascinated by her and does not hesitate to approach her, however introducing himself under a false name. A feeling of mutual sympathy develops between the two, which in Jan soon turns into love. Jonathan, a multi-millionaire, who has been courting the interior designer for some time, realizes that she has fallen in love with someone else and, driven by jealousy, tries to find out who her rival is. When he discovers that Jan is in love with Brad Allen, his best friend, without wasting time, she forces him to abandon New York and retire to a distant villa in Connecticut. Brad accepts, apparently resigned, but plays a trick on Jonathan: he invites Jan to accompany him. After some time, however, the girl discovers the true identity of the man she loves: indignant and saddened, she returns to New York. But Brad is seriously in love with her and in order to have the opportunity to meet her, he entrusts her with the task of renovating the furnishings of his apartment. Jan accepts, but she takes revenge on her, turning Brad's house into some kind of museum of bad taste. Furious, Brad rushes into the girl's house, lifts her bodily and takes her to her house, where the mutual explanation and reconciliation takes place.
