00:02 Hi, I'm Diana Carreiro, global makeup artist for Mary Kay,
00:05 and I'm going to show you some tips on foundation.
00:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:10 So Kirsten, what's your biggest makeup issue?
00:18 I mean, the thing that really gets you frustrated.
00:21 I think I definitely have to say foundation.
00:23 Really?
00:24 Yeah.
00:24 I can never get the right shade.
00:26 Like, I've tried a ton of them, and every brand
00:28 has different shades, and it's just so hard to find that.
00:32 OK, so foundation is an issue for you.
00:35 And then to take it a step further, contouring.
00:38 So what I'm going to do is I'm going
00:40 to show you a few tips on foundation and contouring,
00:43 because even women who have been wearing makeup for years
00:46 find it difficult. So let me help
00:47 you learn a few of the basics of foundation
00:50 and some advanced techniques as well.
00:51 Oh, definitely.
00:53 OK, so when you're selecting a foundation,
00:55 there are a few tips that you need to keep in mind.
00:58 You want to keep your skin type in mind.
01:00 You want to make sure that you choose the coverage that you
01:04 need and also the finish that you desire.
01:07 Normal to oily skin types can benefit from a mineral powder
01:10 foundation, which is a natural finish,
01:12 or a matte liquid foundation, which has a matte finish
01:15 and is great for special occasions,
01:17 especially when the photography is going to be done.
01:19 Normal to dry skin can really benefit
01:21 from the CC cream, which is my absolute favorite
01:23 and the one I actually wear.
01:25 You can also wear the Luminous Wear Foundation.
01:27 That will just bounce back light and gives you
01:29 a glorious luminous finish.
01:31 Or again, we can go back to the mineral powder foundation,
01:34 because it's a very light, buildable coverage.
01:37 If you need really good coverage,
01:38 that's when you want to go to our Cream to Powder, which
01:41 provides a matte finish.
01:43 Wait, so what about picking the perfect shade?
01:45 How would I go about doing that the right way?
01:47 OK, well, this is a good question,
01:49 because unlike color cosmetics that you can happily
01:52 pick your lovely colors online, unless you've already
01:56 purchased and know your shade from an in-person purchase,
01:59 you really shouldn't be buying foundation online.
02:02 So this is where Mary Kay, independent beauty consultant,
02:04 can really help you choose the right shade.
02:06 She'll ask you the right questions
02:08 and pick the perfect match for you.
02:10 So now to application.
02:12 First thing we want to do is always make sure
02:14 that your skin is really well prepped.
02:16 You want to make sure you're moisturized,
02:17 and we want to make sure that you have your primer on.
02:20 So you've already got all that stuff on,
02:23 so let's just go right ahead, right into our foundation.
02:26 I've chosen Ivory 5 because of your warm undertones.
02:29 You want to use a liquid foundation brush,
02:30 and Mary Kay has a great one.
02:32 Start in the middle of your face,
02:33 because that's typically where you need the most coverage,
02:36 right?
02:37 Just blend, blend, blend out toward the hairline
02:39 and the jawline.
02:40 Then what I like to do is I like to take a mineral powder
02:43 foundation brush and buff over everything I've done.
02:46 It really gives you that gorgeous airbrushed effect.
02:49 Flat bristles of this brush really blend well.
02:52 Once that's all done, that's when
02:54 I apply concealer, just to the areas that
02:56 might need a bit more coverage, like under the eye area,
02:59 maybe around the nose, or the odd blemish.
03:01 You want to conceal it's the same shade,
03:03 or maybe just a little bit lighter than your skin tone.
03:05 I use my ring finger or my pinky to just gently tap it
03:09 into the skin.
03:10 Then I dust a little translucent powder over the face
03:12 to set the foundation.
03:16 OK.
03:17 How does that look?
03:19 Wow.
03:20 That looks so much better than the way I do it.
03:22 I feel like I used twice as much concealer.
03:25 And I think that's the thing.
03:27 It doesn't really take a lot.
03:28 You just need a little bit.
03:30 And it's a really-- it's a common mistake.
03:31 Women overdo their foundation, and then it
03:34 starts to look cakey, which can age you.
03:36 So we don't want to do that.
03:37 You can use just a small amount, and you'll
03:39 get a really lovely coverage.
03:41 So Kirsten, now there's one thing
03:43 that I'm going to teach you about contouring that's
03:45 going to make your life really easy.
03:47 When you're contouring, just remember the number three.
03:50 You apply the bronzing powder with a cheek brush
03:53 to the contours of the face using this three formation
03:56 on either side of the face, from the hairline
03:59 along the temples, under the cheekbones,
04:01 and around the lower jawline.
04:03 And if you really want to fit into the contour of your cheek,
04:06 just squeeze the bristles at the base of the brush
04:08 and create a slimmer brush.
04:10 That's it.
04:10 So now let's try something really different.
04:17 Let's try a contoured look.
04:18 And I'm going to use three foundation shades instead
04:21 of the normal one.
04:22 So since I've already applied your regular foundation, one
04:26 that you would wear every day, what I'm going to do
04:28 is I'm going to take a foundation that's
04:29 one or two shades lighter than your regular foundation
04:32 and one that's two shades--
04:35 maybe one to two shades darker than your regular foundation.
04:39 So remember those highlights in the face
04:41 that we talked about earlier?
04:42 We're going to apply it right there.
04:44 I'm just going to add a few stripes of color.
04:46 And then I'm going to do a bit of a V right here.
04:53 Now, the next step, I'm going to use the darker foundation.
05:00 And what I'm going to do is I'm going
05:03 to add the dark foundation right along the hairline
05:10 in just a few little dots.
05:12 Going to add it to the temples.
05:14 And just under the cheekbones.
05:16 Now, to finish, we want-- you don't have to,
05:18 but if you'd like to, we can contour the sides of your nose
05:22 just to give it a little bit sharper finish.
05:25 Just like that.
05:27 Either side of the nose and down around the tip.
05:32 Now let me show you how to turn this into a real work of art.
05:34 What we're going to do is we're going
05:36 to take our Mary Kay sponge, and I've dampened it just
05:38 a little bit.
05:39 And now I'm going to start to blend.
05:40 And this is really where it starts to happen.
05:43 So I'm just dabbing, and I'm going
05:44 to start with our lightest color because I
05:47 want to be sure that the brush--
05:49 the sponge is nice and clean.
05:50 So we're just dabbing.
05:52 No swiping.
05:53 I really want to keep the color where I put it.
05:55 So you can see already that we've just
06:00 highlighted the face.
06:02 I know, it's great.
06:03 Just then.
06:04 Now we're going to go and we're going to start
06:06 to blend in the darker color.
06:08 Now, this is where you just need to take your time.
06:11 Don't be afraid, and just keep blending and blending
06:14 and blending until you've got a nice, even coverage.
06:19 And people want to rush this step all the time,
06:22 but really, you just want to blend, blend, blend.
06:26 Take your time.
06:27 And remember, it's a more advanced type of contouring.
06:32 And you see how I'm blending it up?
06:34 Just up, up, up into the hairline.
06:36 Oh, yeah.
06:37 I've always thought about that.
06:38 Right?
06:38 Because we don't want to get it back down on here
06:40 because this is where we really want those highlights, right?
06:43 So we're just blending up, up, up.
06:45 OK, so you've taken your time and you've really blended
06:47 that in with your damp sponge.
06:49 To finish it off, what we're going to do
06:50 is we're going to gently, gently brush over the whole face.
06:54 And we're just going to buff the edges together.
06:57 Once we've got that done, we're going
06:58 to set the whole thing with our translucent powder.
07:02 I'm using our translucent powder brush.
07:04 And I'm just going to very lightly powder over those areas
07:08 just to set the whole thing.
07:11 So how do you feel?
07:14 Well, honestly, I feel like a celebrity.
07:16 I think I can do this and pull it off.
07:18 Of course you can.
07:19 Remember this tip.
07:20 It's really simple.
07:21 Take your time, blend well, and always check your finished face
07:25 in good light.
07:27 Makeup isn't complicated.
07:28 Doesn't have to be.
07:29 It's about experimenting and having fun.
07:31 With a little practice, anybody can do this.
07:34 If I can do it, you can do it.
