00:00 Just went over the instructions in the dress room.
00:02 I want you to obey my commands at all times.
00:04 These shorts are good.
00:05 These shorts up here are good.
00:07 Touch gloves.
00:08 Good luck to the boat.
00:09 Good luck.
00:10 >> So here we go.
00:16 Four rounds in the 118 pound division.
00:21 Aider Clairvois and Francisco Rodriguez.
00:23 You see Clairvois in the black trunks trimmed with gold.
00:27 Rodriguez in the white trunks with the black lettering.
00:32 I mentioned the tough luck start to the career of Aider Clairvois.
00:37 Very unusual to see someone, Steve,
00:38 come right off the Canadian national team
00:41 and have the kind of start to his career that he's had.
00:44 But again, as he mentioned, without a promoter,
00:46 without management, he's just wound up in bad situations.
00:49 And when you look at the guys he's fighting last time out,
00:52 you know, Jorge Abiage, a Cuban fighter who's 11 and 2,
00:55 that shouldn't be who you're facing at this stage
00:57 in your career, quite frankly.
00:59 >> Absolutely not.
01:00 But at some point, he has to take responsibility
01:02 for the decision, the fights that he signs.
01:04 And you know, fighting a guy on the road 11 and 2,
01:06 a Cuban standout, you have to kill him to get a draw.
01:10 So I mean, maybe some bad choices personally,
01:11 but hopefully he can get back on the right foot here tonight
01:13 at the Owl's Nest.
01:14 But he has his hands full, possibly with Francisco Rodriguez.
01:20 >> Clairvois spent time training with Eric Bazran,
01:23 the multi-time Canadian national amateur champion.
01:25 They were teammates.
01:26 You'll see Bazran in our co-feature coming up next
01:29 as he takes on Andres Jimenez.
01:32 Good counter left hook there from Clairvois.
01:35 [ Crowd noise ]
01:40 >> In talking to Clairvois, and I think understandably,
01:43 there was kind of a, almost a sense of frustration,
01:46 maybe bordering on bitterness.
01:47 He said, "I was enjoying my time in the amateurs much more.
01:50 I knew what was coming.
01:51 I was taken care of."
01:53 He really hasn't been able to find his footing
01:55 as a professional.
01:56 >> Well, as a professional, I'll tell you one thing.
01:58 You have to earn that comfort.
02:00 You have to earn everything
02:01 in the game of professional boxing.
02:03 So, I mean, this is the difference
02:05 between the amateurs and the pros.
02:06 I mean, you have to earn it by your performances in the ring.
02:09 So, I mean, he needed to prove himself.
02:11 And here's an opportunity for him tonight
02:13 at a great venue like the Owl's Nest to prove himself
02:18 that he's one of the best in the country
02:19 and possibly in the world.
02:22 >> Do a good work here in the early going,
02:24 particularly to the body.
02:25 There was an uppercut to the body,
02:26 then a right hand tucked underneath the elbow
02:29 of Rodriguez.
02:32 Wow, looking very smooth and shifty here
02:35 in the early going.
02:37 You can certainly see the schooling here, Steve.
02:42 I'm sure if you're tuning in right now,
02:43 you're probably thinking,
02:45 "Wait, this guy's four fights into his career.
02:46 He's won three.
02:48 That doesn't make sense."
02:49 >> It doesn't make sense at all.
02:50 But, I mean, like he said, he's taken some bad fights
02:52 and maybe he's gotten some rough decisions,
02:54 but he's a very, very good boxer
02:57 as he lands a couple nice short right hands on Rodriguez.
03:00 But he has that beautiful flow, that nice skill.
03:04 He's a very good boxer here.
03:06 >> 15 seconds of the opening round.
03:10 Nice start for Aider Clairvois,
03:12 but back comes Francisco Rodriguez.
03:17 Lands a nice uppercut on the inside.
03:20 Good action to start things off.
03:23 >> You see Rodriguez really let his hands go a little bit
03:25 into that last round,
03:27 and that's gonna be something that Cuarón can make sure
03:29 he cannot do that moving forward,
03:32 is stand in front of Francisco Rodriguez,
03:35 especially if he lands a nice three or four punch combination.
03:38 He's gotta move to the side one way or another
03:40 because Francisco Rodriguez is in the back.
03:43 He has his shell hand up.
03:45 That's when he can come back and try to get him.

04:25 >> Round two now underway.
04:33 It's on the corner of Francisco Rodriguez,
04:35 who now comes out as an orthodox fighter
04:38 after spending the vast majority of the opening round as a lefty.
04:41 Rodriguez trains in the Navarrete gym,
04:44 and you might recognize that last name
04:46 as being from Emmanuel Navarrete,
04:48 three-division world champion.
04:50 We saw Emmanuel's brother, Johnny Navarrete,
04:53 here at the Owl's Nest taking on Zoltarani last time out.
04:57 Rodriguez actually started in the sport
04:59 at the same time as Navarrete.
05:02 He took time off to start his medical career,
05:05 but he's not taking any time off here
05:07 to kick off round two.
05:09 >> Absolutely not, Corey.
05:10 Rodriguez came out with a different mindset
05:11 and a different attitude.
05:12 He's really letting his hands go
05:14 and putting a lot of pressure on Karras.
05:17 And in the four-rounder, Corey,
05:22 as we talked about this earlier in the night,
05:24 you really gotta let your hands go.
05:25 I mean, if you get down one or two rounds
05:27 and you gotta play catch up in a four-rounder,
05:30 it's tough to do if you're down two or three rounds early.
05:34 >> I think there may be some blood coming from the nose
05:36 of Adar Clairbois.
05:37 There is.
05:38 >> A lot of blood coming down the arms
05:39 and the chest of Rodriguez.
05:43 An excellent start to this round from Rodriguez
05:46 as he's kind of flowing between stances
05:49 and giving Clairbois a little bit of problems here.
05:52 >> And you see a little bit of confidence
05:54 in the aura of Rodriguez.
05:57 He feels like he's got control of this fight
05:59 and he's the one calling the shots.
06:02 >> Rodriguez training around world champions.
06:07 He says that even though Navarrete is his friend,
06:09 sometimes he looks over and he's like,
06:11 "Wait a minute, Emmanuel, Navarrete's here with me?"
06:16 >> Shot to the body there from Clairbois.
06:18 He's gonna have to claw his way back into this round.
06:20 This is an excellent start for Rodriguez.
06:23 >> It's not that Rodriguez is doing anything special.
06:28 Clairbois is just letting him walk him down
06:31 and throw punches without doing anything
06:32 or getting out of the way or using an angle
06:34 or sticking a jab in his face.
06:36 He's letting Rodriguez just walk him down and throw punches.
06:40 >> See the blood really starting to flow
07:00 on the face of Clairbois.
07:02 Waits a good combination there from Rodriguez
07:05 but comes back with a nice uppercut out the middle.
07:09 >> Short little left hook from Rodriguez.
07:12 >> Clairbois being forced into a bit of a firefight here
07:16 and this is Rodriguez's game.
07:19 An excellent bounce back round here for Francisco Rodriguez.
07:23 >> Very good round right from the opening bell.
07:28 Francisco Rodriguez applied the pressure
07:31 right from the outset of round two.
07:33 He's been applying pressure all throughout the round.
07:36 Here we see him just throwing shots,
07:38 walking down for a while.

08:22 >> Round three begins.
08:24 Let's see if Edith Clairbois can turn things around.
08:28 It's a big round two for Francisco Rodriguez.
08:32 You know, before the fight, Steve, Rodriguez told us,
08:37 "Hey, you know, I'd like to steal
08:38 some Manny Pacquiao techniques."
08:40 He said that those are the tapes that he watches the most of.
08:42 I'm not going to compare him to Manny Pacquiao
08:44 but you can see some of the things he's doing with his feet.
08:47 You can see some of the inspiration where he's getting it.
08:49 >> He's showing the excitement and the hyperness
08:51 that he's here to fight and getting up on his toes.
08:53 Absolutely no comparison to Manny Pacquiao whatsoever.
08:56 But in that round two, he did apply a lot of pressure.
08:59 In my eyes, he stole that round.
09:01 And I mean, round threes and fours
09:02 will take it home here tonight.
09:05 Clairbois has got to do what he was doing in the first round.
09:07 Boxing beautiful, popping that jab and using those angles.
09:11 In the second round, it's like he just stopped punching
09:13 and let Rodriguez walk him down,
09:15 throw punches, and land clean punches.
09:18 [crowd noise]
09:24 >> Clairbois' corner asking for the left hook.
09:26 Asking him to kind of hook off the jab.
09:31 And to your point, Steve, I think just adding another
09:33 punch to that combination rather than just a jab
09:37 and stepping back, clearly that's not enough
09:39 to deter Rodriguez right now.
09:40 >> It's not. It's not going to stop Rodriguez.
09:42 And Rodriguez is moving forward and on the offensive right now.
09:46 So Clairbois is definitely going to be throwing more
09:48 than one and two shots.
09:49 He's got to do threes and fours, use angles,
09:52 and really start picking Rodriguez apart
09:53 like he was in the opening round.
09:58 >> Clairbois certainly managing his distance better
09:59 in this round.
10:00 There's a nice counter uppercut.
10:03 And that's probably more of what you'd like to see
10:05 from him, Steve, there.
10:06 He made Rodriguez fall short.
10:08 He steps in with an uppercut, gets back out,
10:11 gets out unscathed.
10:12 >> And like we mentioned earlier,
10:13 he's a smooth, good, good boxer.
10:15 He has good hands. He lets his hands go.
10:17 He's very effective versus Rodriguez.
10:20 But when he's backing up and not throwing punches,
10:22 Rodriguez is able to land and apply pressure
10:25 and convince his judges that he's winning the round.
10:30 >> Do you feel like perhaps Clairbois is one of those
10:32 fighters where when he's in rhythm,
10:34 he's really hard to beat.
10:35 But if you can break that rhythm,
10:37 that kind of, you know, enable him to go for a walk
10:39 through the jab out there, when you break that rhythm,
10:41 things become tough.
10:43 >> And that's exactly what has happened here in this fight.
10:45 But to that point, Corotis landed a beautiful left
10:49 hook to the body that sort of stung Rodriguez momentarily.
10:54 [crowd noise]
11:01 >> Clairbois trying to take the initiative
11:02 a little bit more there.
11:04 Has to walk Rodriguez down.
11:06 Good defense from Rodriguez to get out of the way
11:07 of those shots.
11:08 But as you mentioned, probably the most consequential shot
11:12 of the round with that body shot.
11:14 There's a nice counter right hand again from Clairbois.
11:18 Good bounce back round.

12:23 >> Fourth and final round of a fight that very much
12:26 could be in the balance here, Steve.
12:28 >> It's a very competitive fight.
12:29 We don't know how these judges are scoring it.
12:32 When Clairbois was letting his hands go and use those angles,
12:35 he's looking beautiful.
12:36 But the constant pressure from Francisco Rodriguez,
12:40 landing those punches when Clairbois was on the ropes.
12:42 I mean, it's a tough one to score.
12:44 And I think this round number four is here is going to be
12:46 a big round in the winner of this fight.
12:52 >> I think in all likelihood this is a 2-1 fight so far
12:55 for Clairbois.
12:56 I think the opening round likely goes to him.
12:58 But round two and round three were very clear for each fighter
13:01 respectively.
13:02 So Rodriguez has a chance to at least pull out a draw,
13:05 I would think here in the fourth round if the judges are seeing
13:08 what we're seeing.
13:10 [crowd noise]
13:14 >> Rodriguez hunting for some of those uppercuts.
13:16 He said that that would be his money punch in his words
13:20 here in this fight.
13:25 Landed a couple of them but hasn't really been able to get
13:28 consistent work on the inside.
13:31 With the super mobile Ader Clairbois.
13:38 Is Clairbois willing to engage him on the inside?
13:41 But you have to look out.
13:42 See that shot that Rodriguez is looking for.
13:47 >> And opposed to the second round where Clairbois was
13:50 backing up and moving.
13:52 He's now backing up and he's stopping and throwing nice
13:54 counter shots and catching Rodriguez as Rodriguez is kind
13:58 of walking in effortlessly without sharp defense.
14:03 [crowd noise]
14:12 >> Clairbois activating his jab a little bit more here in this
14:15 round.
14:16 He's come behind the right hand with a jab.
14:22 Now using his feet and his defense as we're inside the
14:25 final minute of this fight.
14:27 [crowd noise]
14:45 >> Rodriguez looks like he might have just completely run out
14:48 of gas, Steve.
14:49 >> Some good body shots landed by Clairbois at the end of the
14:52 third round and the start of this fourth round.
14:55 And that really took a lot out of Rodriguez.
14:58 And again, some good footwork by Clairbois that's really given
15:02 Rodriguez a lot of problems.
15:03 Maybe taking some wind out of him.
15:04 Good angles side to side making Rodriguez miss.
15:08 >> Beautiful counter left hook from Clairbois in that sequence
15:11 a moment ago.
15:13 As the seconds tick away, a gutsy performance from Clairbois
15:19 who desperately needed a win here tonight.
15:22 [crowd noise]
15:30 >> What I mean, Corey, with the exception of the second round,
15:32 I thought Eder Clarot, he boxed well, he used angles well.
15:36 He's a very, very good boxer.
15:38 Hopefully the judge has got it right and he can get back on the
15:40 winning track and kind of skyrocket his career into
15:44 whatever it could be or wherever he wants it to be.
15:46 But he still boxed very well tonight.
15:49 Take away nothing away from Francisco Rodriguez.
15:52 He came to fight, he kept coming forward, he did his best.
15:55 In the end, ultimately, I just don't think it was enough to
15:57 pull the decision against a Canadian fighter here in Canada
16:00 tonight.
16:01 >> Well, Steve, as you know, matchmaking is an art in the
16:04 sport of boxing.
16:05 And Lou DeBello likes to joke, and I think he's serious.
16:08 He likes to say, "I can get anyone to 20-0."
16:11 He goes to me, "I can get you to 20-0."
16:13 The reality is that the opposite can be true.
16:15 You can take a good fighter, match them poorly at the
16:18 beginning of their career, and make them 1-3 like Eder Clarot
16:21 blocked.
16:22 With different management, I think we're talking about him
16:24 in an entirely different match.
16:26 >> Absolutely.
16:27 And hopefully things go well for him here tonight.
16:30 I'm sure they will.
16:31 And hopefully this can be a learning process as he grows.
16:34 We've seen with this new team behind him, he's got a whole
16:37 new team to hopefully things will go well for him as he
16:39 moves his career forward.
16:42 >> Looks like we are ready to make this one official.
16:44 The scorecards are in.
16:46 So let's send it back up to David Niemey.
16:50 [bell ringing]
16:53 >> Ladies and gentlemen, after four rounds of action, we go to
16:57 the scorecards.
16:58 Judge at ringside, Alan Davis has it, 39-37.
17:02 Jeremy Hayes, 40-36.
17:04 And Jim Moncobon, 39-37.
17:08 All to your winner by unanimous decision, Eder Clairvois!

17:28 excuse me, since his pro debut.
