The Senate voted Thursday night to raise the government’s debt ceiling and cut trillions of dollars in spending, concluding a long and fractious political struggle that pushed the nation to the brink of default.

00:18 I thank my colleagues for the good work tonight.
00:36 I commend President Biden and his team for
00:39 producing a sensible compromise under the most difficult of circumstances.
00:44 So many of the destructive provisions in the Republican bill are gone.
00:49 Because we persisted and we kept insisting that default is off the table,
00:57 we will not be defaulting.
00:59 And we will not be passing the hard rights extreme agenda, virtually no part of it.
01:05 And that is thanks to the Senate and House Democrats and to President Biden.
01:11 This demanded a bipartisan solution.
01:14 We knew we need to come together for a solution like the one that passed tonight.
01:18 And so I'm happy to stand here passing this critical legislation to support our
01:23 families, preserve vital programs, and most importantly, avoid catastrophic default.
