00:02 Is it on, is it on?
00:04 - Wait, what is it?
00:05 - Uh oh.
00:06 - Uh oh.
00:07 It's on?
00:08 Hey guys, how are you guys?
00:11 Hello behind the chair and I'm on CoTrend.
00:14 Thank you for letting me do a Facebook live.
00:18 Today I'm gonna show you guys how to do some styling
00:21 for the holidays and also my signature look
00:24 and also the new wave and the combination of both.
00:27 And you know what, I'm really easy.
00:30 Let's get started.
00:31 I just wanna make sure this is to the point
00:33 and get you guys really get involved
00:35 and you know how impatient we are.
00:37 So we're all hairdressers so let's get into it.
00:40 All right, this is Amy, my model.
00:42 She also works here and she's an amazing colorist.
00:45 So if you guys can follow her as well, she's awesome.
00:48 So this is,
00:53 oh yeah, we need to do that vertical.
00:57 It's all good, all good, all good.
01:00 This is why I like live because it's so incognito.
01:03 So with her hair, I prepare her hair
01:07 with pretty much no bodice in here.
01:10 I added some extension because she wants some fullness to it
01:13 and it's nice and fuller now so it's good for the holidays
01:17 and she's just had a baby.
01:19 So she had a lot of little baby hair
01:21 so it's really good to get that hair a little more volume,
01:26 a little more texture, a little more thickness.
01:28 So I'm gonna go ahead and put some waves in her, okay?
01:31 So first, I usually start in the beginning.
01:35 Like in the beginning, I usually start in the front part
01:39 and as you can see, these are extensions that we have.
01:43 They're very, very, you know, they fit really well.
01:48 The coloring is really, really important
01:52 that it just seeps into it and it's like
01:54 blending really perfectly.
01:59 So I'm really, really picky about extensions.
02:01 It has to be really done well
02:03 and especially when you're putting your hair up
02:04 and doing all these things, it has to fit really well
02:08 and nicely to it.
02:09 So my first section right here,
02:10 I'm gonna go in and do the new wave.
02:18 So first, I'm gonna start horizontally
02:23 and then opening up the clip of the Marcel iron.
02:27 You can do this on the regular curling iron as well
02:31 but I like to do this because it's easy for me
02:34 to open in and out but if you're gonna do it on yourself,
02:36 to do it on the spring loaded.
02:38 So I basically follow this in and out
02:43 or I can go in and click it real quickly
02:48 and then flip the iron around.
02:52 Okay, I'm doing this as slowly as I can
02:58 so you guys see what I'm doing.
02:59 And I'm using an inch and a half,
03:03 actually an inch and a quarter
03:04 so you can get it more pronounced.
03:07 And then if it's sometimes you get a little crease
03:11 here and there, you can go back in
03:13 and just soften it up like this.
03:14 (clicking)
03:17 All right.
03:19 - Lauren wants to know, do you prep with any products?
03:25 - With her hair, I didn't because I put extensions in
03:30 so I didn't put any oil in but you can put some oil in
03:35 but we did a really good conditioning treatment
03:37 before that when she had her color done
03:39 so it should be fine.
03:44 So my next section here, but usually I put in oil.
03:47 The oil I really like is the mythic oil
03:50 'cause it's very light and it's very,
03:52 it's water based.
03:55 I really don't like to use anything that's too heavy
03:57 that you can't wash out or hard to wash out
04:00 so I like water based oil.
04:03 - Katie wants to know, why not use a waving iron?
04:09 - What kind of waving iron?
04:12 Oh you mean like, the one that has the waffle to it?
04:17 'Cause it's too, I don't know, it's too mechanical for me.
04:22 Whereas this, I can go in, I'll show you the bit right here.
04:27 I can go in and put a band here and then space it out here
04:33 and then put another band here and space it out here.
04:35 Whereas the other one is just really automatic
04:39 all the way through.
04:39 So this one is a little more customizing
04:42 and that's why, depending on the hair length
04:44 and stuff like that.
04:45 So this next one here, I'm gonna put in
04:49 the live in wave, okay?
04:51 - Crystal asks, wouldn't the oil burn the hair
04:55 when you use hot tools?
04:57 - Well it depends on how much you put in.
05:00 I put in very little to the point where it protects the hair
05:03 'cause it has argan oil so it's really good for the heat.
05:08 (upbeat music)
05:10 And that's a really good question.
05:15 Because if you really think about it,
05:16 when you fry stuff, you put oil in it and it burns the hair.
05:20 I mean it burns the food.
05:21 But in this case, you put a little bit in, it protects it.
05:24 And I'm not putting a golf of it, you know?
05:27 I'm just putting maybe a pea size for her length of hair.
05:30 Just a little bit.
05:32 You don't have to put a lot in.
05:33 And if you do wanna do a really more concentrated
05:38 heat protectant, then put it on when it's damp.
05:40 You know, versus put it on when it's dry.
05:44 'Cause when it dries, it's just like coaster hair,
05:45 but when it's damp, you really seep it in
05:48 'cause you blow dry it in there more
05:49 and it really seeps into the hair.
05:51 So this next one here, this is what I was talking about.
05:57 So first of all, I like to start with the clamp going under.
06:01 Like this.
06:05 Because if you were to go over like this from the start,
06:09 you're gonna get a clamp, you're gonna get a crease.
06:11 I'll show you guys in a minute
06:12 so you guys can understand what I mean.
06:14 So this one goes in like this.
06:16 And the next one up like this.
06:21 And the next one goes down like this.
06:23 See, I can space the wave, you know?
06:27 - What temperature do you keep your iron at?
06:35 - I keep it at usually about 400, you know?
06:39 Sometimes I do like 450.
06:41 It depends if it's like Asian hair, strong Asian hair,
06:43 but if it's like, let's say Eddie's hair, come on, Eddie.
06:46 This is Eddie, my other assistant.
06:48 Let's say if I were to iron his hair,
06:50 if he has like hair down in here,
06:52 I would use like maybe 330, you know?
06:56 Just because when someone has hair that's light
06:59 or they have like fun color hair,
07:01 just bring the temperature really low
07:04 so you don't burn out the color.
07:06 You don't fade the color, right?
07:09 Someone who does color, I should ask her.
07:12 You agree?
07:12 - Yeah.
07:13 - But even with this, I don't really use
07:17 like a high, super high temperature
07:18 because her hair is on the finer side, you know?
07:21 And if you use it too high, it just, it shocks the hair
07:25 and it just makes it all, you know, crispy and kind of weird.
07:30 - Crispy.
07:31 (laughing)
07:34 - All right.
07:36 - Do you still recommend using that same oil
07:37 if they have fine hair and their scalp gets oily?
07:41 - Yes, yes.
07:42 And the reason why, 'cause it's light
07:44 and that's why I like it because I can layer.
07:46 I can have, I can use a lot more
07:48 when someone has thick hair, you know?
07:50 'Cause I, I don't know, I like something universal
07:53 that I can use for a lot of hair
07:54 'cause I hate a lot of products
07:58 because the worst things you get
07:59 is like detailed through, they get this
08:01 and then you actually, when they come out of the salon,
08:04 they look at the product range.
08:06 If there's an oil for fine hair, medium hair,
08:09 all these kind of textures, it's just confusing for clients.
08:12 So I like to use something that's like very universal
08:14 for all types of hair.
08:16 And if it's thick hair, I can layer it.
08:18 If it's fine hair, I can use it less.
08:20 So, my next one's gonna be,
08:29 again, the NuWave.
08:30 It's really fun.
08:37 If you guys get the hang of this,
08:40 this is, it's so, it's so fun.
08:42 And then you can actually customize it more, you know?
08:46 And you see all those little baby hair that she has?
08:51 (laughs)
08:54 Second baby. - Baby hair.
08:55 - Love, love the baby hair.
08:58 But you know, in a way, it adds volume to the hair,
09:00 you know?
09:01 (laughs)
09:03 - Silver lining.
09:04 - Exactly, the silver lining.
09:06 And this last piece right here,
09:09 I'm gonna go in and do a live-in.
09:14 So I always wanna finish off with a live-in,
09:16 especially when I'm doing these combination
09:18 of the Nu and the live-in,
09:21 because I like how this part opens up the face,
09:25 because I still want it pretty.
09:27 So it's like pretty rough, elegant kind of deal, you know?
09:31 'Cause the Nu has that kind of like wave kind of feeling to it
09:34 and this one has a little more softness to it.
09:36 So the Nu goes in like this and the wave goes on the side.
09:40 So what it does,
09:41 it creates a lot more texture into your hair.
09:43 And it actually gives it more of a natural wave to the hair
09:46 than if you just do it one or the other.
09:49 So I've really been into this lately a lot,
09:52 just because I think sometimes when you're doing
09:55 the same thing over and over and again,
09:57 it's just like, it gets monotonous.
09:59 And with such artists, it's boring, you know?
10:03 - For those who are asking,
10:05 he's using Mythic Oil from L'Oreal.
10:08 - Can we do a shot thing right here?
10:10 - Looks like this.
10:25 - So I'm just continuing this all the way through.
10:27 You see it?
10:31 So when you do, when I bring this out,
10:33 you can see how it goes in and in and out.
10:35 It's really cool.
10:36 And I'm not leaving a crease right here.
10:39 But I'm gonna show you the mistake in the back,
10:41 so it won't be on the top.
10:43 And then therefore you can see the difference.
10:45 - For those tuning in right now,
10:51 this is Onko Tran here at Ramiro's Transform.
10:55 We are currently working on Amy.
10:58 - Amy Houston, right?
11:00 - Yeah.
11:01 - Yeah.
11:02 - And he is showing us the Lived In waves
11:05 with the His New waves.
11:07 And L'Oreal Mythic Oil is not a silicone-based product.
11:15 Anna wants to know, do you only use L'Oreal products?
11:21 - No, I use other products as well.
11:24 At the salon we sell Orbe, we have Davines,
11:28 and then we have, wait, guys,
11:30 what's that Japanese line again?
11:32 - Mil-
11:33 - Infinon.
11:34 - Infinon, yes.
11:35 And we have also Melbourne,
11:37 and L'Oreal Professionnel.
11:40 And that's it.
11:41 I wanna keep it simple.
11:43 I don't wanna have a beauty supply at the salon.
11:46 You know, when your clients walk out,
11:47 they're like so confused.
11:49 What'd I get?
11:50 You know?
11:51 But yeah, we wanna keep it more curated.
11:54 So we get our, people who love the Orbe,
11:57 people love like ProFiber, we also have ProFiber here,
12:01 which is a really great conditioning treatment
12:03 that we do here at the salon.
12:05 And yeah, it's just all range of things that people,
12:11 and I like that, 'cause I like to keep variety.
12:13 So I just finished up the side.
12:18 I'm gonna keep it like that until it cools down.
12:20 I wanna move on to the other side.
12:22 So I put this over here.
12:32 Hey, Sammy.
12:35 And then we'll put this up the way.
12:42 I love being here on Monday, 'cause it's really,
12:48 it's nice.
12:50 It's not hectic.
12:51 It's peaceful.
12:52 So this piece right here, I'm gonna go ahead
12:56 and do the lift and wave.
12:59 So, you know, I know that you guys see me
13:03 switching back and forth with the waves.
13:07 I mean, it took me quite some time to like
13:10 really get the combination down correctly,
13:13 because if you don't do this correctly,
13:16 the waves can be really weird, you know?
13:21 So a lot of times when I do like a new,
13:23 right behind it or right on top of it
13:28 or right underneath it, it's the lift and, you know?
13:32 So it's a combination of both.
13:34 So this is the new, I mean, this is the lift and wave,
13:37 and this is the new.
13:39 So they're very similar in the way
13:40 that it just bends really nicely.
13:42 And even though it's a different technique,
13:44 but once you rough it up, it just blends in really easily.
13:48 - Chris wants to know if you are going to do
13:52 a class in Frankfurt.
13:54 - Oh, I would love that.
13:55 Germany, right?
13:57 Yes.
13:58 No, I,
13:59 stay tuned.
14:02 Can't promise anything.
14:04 But I would love that.
14:05 I love traveling.
14:06 I mean, that's one thing great about doing what we do
14:10 is that we get to travel, and, you know,
14:14 maybe the part of me being a German guy
14:16 is like I always like to get stimulation.
14:18 I always like going around and doing things
14:20 and be
14:21 stimulated by environment, by my art or fashion
14:27 or just art in general, not my art,
14:29 but just in general.
14:30 And I love that.
14:32 And I think there's so many different
14:33 inspiration everywhere.
14:36 So yeah, Frankfurt would be amazing.
14:38 So, I'm sorry, real quickly.
14:43 So this is the lived-in.
14:45 And I'm gonna do, on top of that,
14:46 I'm gonna do the new.
14:47 Okay?
14:50 Just make sure that you have,
14:52 this is different from that one,
14:54 that one's different from that one,
14:55 and that one's different from that one.
14:56 So once you break it up, it blends,
14:59 you know, technically not, but it kind of blends.
15:02 - Would you charge a formal styling price for this
15:08 or a regular blowout with an iron?
15:11 - I would say regular blowout with iron, you know?
15:14 But I would say maybe get the process down first
15:18 because there's a lot of like switching around
15:22 with the different kind of waves.
15:25 And once you get that in, and then you can, you know,
15:28 if someone has a lot of hair, then yeah,
15:30 maybe I should, you know?
15:31 But if not, then,
15:33 it's just part of my service here too,
15:37 just curing iron, you know?
15:39 I'm already using it, so.
15:41 I like all these questions.
15:44 I love 'em.
15:45 Keep on asking, it's good.
15:48 - Which way do you curl, away from the face
15:50 or towards the face?
15:52 - Both, both.
15:53 The bottom, I do towards the face,
15:57 and then on the top, I do away from the face
15:59 because if you, I wanna open people's face,
16:02 so I do away from the face,
16:04 and then I wanna hug their neck and then go out.
16:06 So it goes in, out, in, out.
16:09 Like out, out, in, out, in, yeah, something like that.
16:13 (laughing)
16:15 Or yeah.
16:16 And then, so I usually do four sections here.
16:23 That's one here,
16:26 and then another section here,
16:29 and then another section here.
16:32 So this one goes back with the lid in.
16:35 Okay?
16:39 (clicking)
16:41 - For those tuning in just now,
16:43 this is Anko Tran at Ramirez Tran Salon,
16:46 and he is showing us-- - Hi guys.
16:48 - Our, well his look with the combo waves
16:53 of Lived In and New Waves.
16:55 And he didn't use any products
16:58 because she just got extensions,
17:00 but if he did prep, he would use L'Oreal's Mythic Oil.
17:04 Looks like this.
17:08 And the extensions I use,
17:10 can you guys show them the package?
17:12 It's our extensions, it's the Lived In hair extensions.
17:17 Actually, we collaborate with Extensionology on it.
17:21 It's beautiful.
17:22 It's tape in and it's very light, easy in and out
17:26 because honestly, I've done extension for 12 years.
17:29 Doing five hours marathon one is just hard.
17:35 You know?
17:35 So this is like, honestly, how long, 20 minutes?
17:38 - You were so fast, yeah.
17:40 - I mean, just so long as you get the placement right,
17:42 you know, it's very easy.
17:44 So, and I love placement.
17:46 If I were to do color, gosh,
17:49 I'm not good at formulation, but I love placement.
17:53 I would just do like balayage 'cause it's all placement.
17:57 You know, and it's really, it's painting.
18:00 Will this look okay with a one inch iron?
18:05 It's a little tight.
18:07 We've done that before too.
18:09 I would say,
18:10 if you want more of a texture curl, then yes.
18:16 But if you want more like that sexy wave
18:19 that just has sex hair, no, it won't be like that.
18:24 And I love that look, you know?
18:30 I think what inspired me to do all these different looks
18:33 and texture waves is that I remember this picture
18:36 of Kate Moss so clearly where she's like,
18:39 kneeing on the bed and her hair is all messy.
18:41 And I'm the kid of the 90s, so that's a 90s ad
18:46 or a Vogue shoot, I forgot what Vogue it is,
18:49 but it is so beautiful and it pierces my mind still to now,
18:52 to this day, and it's just like, I love that sex hair.
18:56 It's really nice and I think it's still pretty
18:58 and it's still sexy and still rough
18:59 and it has a coolness to it, you know?
19:02 And it's just, you know, I don't know, I like that.
19:06 She's my muse back, you know?
19:10 Still is.
19:10 And I'm moving, so I've been looking at all these magazines
19:14 that I have and I was telling Amy,
19:15 I'm like, I have so much magazine, it's ridiculous.
19:18 But I'm getting rid of it, recycling them.
19:23 All right, now let's move into the back.
19:25 - Random question, do you think longer hair
19:30 on older women make those women look older?
19:34 - No, no, no.
19:38 I like to sit for this.
19:42 No, because I think if they have texture
19:48 and layers into it, then it's fine.
19:50 But if it's down to the butt or, I don't know,
19:54 I think there has to be a cutoff, you know?
19:57 Like maybe around here is fine, but anything,
20:00 I don't know.
20:02 I mean, I've done this gorgeous lady in New York
20:05 and she has hair down here and we've layered a lot
20:08 and it looks good on her.
20:10 Like, it doesn't look like, oh, she turns around,
20:13 it's like, you know, but it looks good.
20:15 It looks really good.
20:16 - Do you use tape-ins so that the hair lays flat?
20:21 - I use tape-in because I feel so guilty
20:27 if I were to take the hair out and the hair
20:30 comes out with it.
20:31 So tape-in, to me, is the least, least, least,
20:35 least damaging to the hair because, especially these tape,
20:39 you can take it out with hand sanitizer
20:42 or rubbing alcohol.
20:44 That's how quick it comes off.
20:45 That's why I like.
20:46 But yeah, I mean, nothing wrong with the other kinds
20:51 at all, but I love this one 'cause it's in and out easily.
20:55 And it doesn't harm the hair in that sense, you know?
20:58 So I'm gonna start from the back.
21:00 So I usually start from the bottom, working my way up.
21:04 I'm gonna show you guys the one that I always like,
21:07 why I do it this way versus the other way.
21:09 And don't critique me on this because it's meant to be
21:15 like a mistake, okay?
21:16 So I usually do this.
21:18 So the handle goes in the bottom, the clip,
21:22 whatever this thing is called.
21:24 So a lot, I don't do this because for this reason.
21:26 So when you go in, you see that crease right there?
21:31 Because there's no way that I can get rid of that crease
21:36 unless I bend hair up like this, you know?
21:39 And sometimes that's harder to do.
21:41 So a lot of times you wanna go in, it's easy to do this.
21:45 And if you want more volume, you can elevate it higher, okay?
21:49 So you want it to be lower, you can not elevate it.
21:53 You know what I mean?
21:54 So your body, you go higher, you want less volume,
21:57 you go lower.
21:59 So in that way, you can manipulate it
22:02 and there's no crease.
22:03 'Cause I have done the crease a lot of times.
22:07 That's why I'm like, oh, let's do it this way
22:09 because it's more efficient and less troublesome.
22:13 So in her case, I want a little more volume, so I elevate.
22:18 So elevation, a lot of people don't think about elevation
22:21 when it comes to curling.
22:23 Think about that too,
22:23 because elevation is very important when you curl.
22:26 If you want more body, elevate it higher.
22:29 If you want less body, lower, okay?
22:32 In her hair, I want body, I want movement.
22:34 And then I'm flipping the iron back and forth,
22:42 back and forth.
22:43 Okay, so can you get the profile of this stand?
22:50 Like how it goes in and out like that?
22:53 So it's very soft.
22:55 There's no crease, no nothing.
22:56 And that's why I like about it.
22:59 And you can do this with a flat iron as well,
23:01 but I like this because it's a little more consistent.
23:05 'Cause the flat iron, sometimes you go too fast
23:07 and it's too curly.
23:08 You go too slow, then it's too less of a wave.
23:12 So I, you know, doing with a lot of clients,
23:16 I just like more efficiency.
23:18 (upbeat music)
23:20 So I'm gonna do this on this side, like this.
23:27 And once I get to the second part, I click.
23:32 And then this piece right here will be my live-in.
23:42 (upbeat music)
23:44 Okay.
23:50 And then I'm gonna take another section.
23:56 And then, so once you guys see that,
24:08 the underneath here is new, live, new.
24:13 So this is new.
24:16 I'm gonna do live.
24:19 You get what I'm saying?
24:24 So it's a combination of both.
24:25 This is the combination where it's like very important
24:28 that you know.
24:29 So here I'm gonna do new,
24:33 because I have live underneath here.
24:36 (upbeat music)
24:39 - Will you ever do a class in Austin, Texas?
24:45 - Oh, I would love to.
24:47 You know, that's where I first came to the States.
24:50 I have fond memories of Austin.
24:53 It is when I was at the age of six to 11.
24:58 And I would love to.
25:02 State too, it's hard to say,
25:06 because we're doing a calendar for next year.
25:08 I will keep in mind all these cities.
25:14 Austin would be easy.
25:16 I can also visit my big brother there.
25:18 My actual big brother, not big brother.
25:22 But yeah.
25:23 All right, this one's new underneath,
25:27 so I'm gonna do live on top.
25:30 All right?
25:31 So now you guys can see the combination.
25:35 So you just keep on doing it.
25:37 And keep in mind.
25:39 I think that's it.
25:46 All you have to do is like,
25:48 one is on top of the other one,
25:49 the other one's on top of the other one.
25:52 Very, very simple.
25:53 So this one is live.
25:54 So I'm gonna do new.
25:57 (clicking)
25:59 All right, and then the next one.
26:08 I'm gonna do the live.
26:11 So sometimes the live is kind of right down each other,
26:15 but not really.
26:16 So if this one's going this way,
26:18 going towards the right,
26:20 the other one I'm gonna do towards the left.
26:22 So therefore the waves won't be going the same direction.
26:27 You get what I'm saying?
26:28 So this one's going that way,
26:29 and this one's going that way.
26:30 So you get more random piece
26:33 instead of like all going the same direction.
26:36 The most I want is like,
26:39 I want a lot of different textures going on.
26:41 And then this one here, I'm gonna do, hi.
26:48 (laughing)
26:49 You wanna say hello to them?
26:51 You wanna say hi to the behind the scenes?
26:53 This is Oya.
26:55 She's also a colorist here.
26:56 She does extension.
26:57 Yeah, we are live.
26:58 (laughing)
27:00 Yeah.
27:01 Say hi to a lot of people.
27:04 - Oh my God, hi a lot of people.
27:06 - Oh yeah, she works here.
27:07 She's a colorist.
27:07 - We're matching today.
27:08 You got my tags this morning.
27:09 - I love plaid.
27:11 I am obsessed with plaid lately.
27:13 It's just pretty.
27:13 - Yeah, all the stores are exclusive, that's why.
27:15 - I know.
27:16 (laughing)
27:17 But yeah, we're doing some hair tutorial.
27:20 - Amazing.
27:23 So, this is new.
27:27 A lot of times, like, sometimes I flip it in
27:34 and flip it out towards the bottom here, right here.
27:37 If it's like towards the end,
27:39 sometimes I like to kick it out.
27:40 And this one's going that way, this one's flipping out.
27:43 I like that.
27:44 The more texture, the merrier,
27:45 especially with her type of hair.
27:50 And sometimes I go back in
27:52 and just redefine the waves a little more.
27:54 And then here's another one that's like,
27:57 so I'm gonna have to end up,
27:59 maybe I can split this in half, okay.
28:01 So that new, I mean that lived in is going the other way.
28:05 So I'm gonna go the opposite direction, all right.
28:09 And then this, I'm gonna finish off with the new.
28:13 - For those of you who are just tuning in,
28:19 we're at Ramirez Tran Salon with Onco Tran.
28:23 He is showing us his lived in and new waves.
28:28 He is using Amy, beautiful Amy, as his model.
28:35 She just got some lived in hair extensions
28:42 from Extensionology and Ramirez Tran.
28:48 Because of that, we didn't prep her hair
28:50 with any products before.
28:52 We blow dried her smooth.
28:55 But if he did use a product, if he would use a product,
28:58 he would use L'Oreal's Mythic Oil, lightweight.
29:01 Keep protecting it, moisturizing.
29:03 - So I'm just continuing working my way up
29:12 all the way to the top of the head.
29:13 And if I don't talk, I'm working at this thing,
29:16 especially with collars, weaning collars,
29:18 we just tag team.
29:19 It'll be like 15 minutes, you know, the most.
29:23 And then, so this one is lived in.
29:31 Collars, you wanna jump in?
29:34 - Sure.
29:35 - Yay!
29:36 - Is this possible to do with a flat iron?
29:38 - Yes, yes.
29:40 I, see, I'm very lazy.
29:45 I don't like to switch tools.
29:48 So to me, I like to just keep one tool with me and just,
29:53 so that's why I came up with this technique
29:56 because I'm like, ah, I just hate picking up the other one
29:59 and doing this curl, like doing the lived in like this
30:02 and picking up the flat iron and do this.
30:05 Super lazy, so I'm like, ah, this has to wait,
30:07 it has to be a way.
30:08 So that's how I developed this technique and with it.
30:13 So definitely for sure you can do with the flat iron,
30:16 for sure, for sure, for sure.
30:17 And you can do it both ways with the flat iron as well too.
30:20 But this has been a part of my hand for the last year,
30:26 so it's been easy for me.
30:28 But I also like that, the fact that Marcel's
30:32 a very old school and this is what we learned
30:34 in beauty school and it's nice to bring back
30:37 and a remnant of like, you know, something old.
30:42 - How long would you say it takes you to complete this look?
30:46 - I would say about 15 minutes.
30:49 - 15.
30:50 - If I were to do it without enough talking,
30:52 'cause I already have the pattern down,
30:54 like where the live and the new goes on top of each other,
30:59 it's fairly easy.
31:01 And we do sometimes about like, gosh,
31:05 15 to 20 clients a day, so you know, we better get it down.
31:11 And I think Carlos have, what is that thing called?
31:15 - A callus?
31:16 - You have a callus yet?
31:18 Yeah, he's developing one.
31:20 I have one for sure, right here.
31:23 But that's from like, twirling the handle.
31:26 Oh, hey, a very good tip.
31:27 To get these handle really loosely,
31:31 any kind of new equipment that you first get,
31:36 you know, it gets really stiff because, you know,
31:38 that's what the manufacturer does
31:39 and you know, make sure that it's like, it's nice.
31:42 Oil it up or lube it up with some WD-40.
31:47 So in the joints, like in the joints here,
31:50 in the joints here, so it twirls easily.
31:53 'Cause a lot of times when it's so hard to turn,
31:56 your hands hurt, you know?
31:58 So, and I've been doing hair for like 16 years and, you know.
32:02 I always wanna keep this thing straight, always.
32:07 Always, always keep the wrist straight
32:09 because if not, you're gonna have like issues.
32:12 Coppertino is not fun.
32:13 And I actually have a friend who had a surgery done
32:16 and it's not the same.
32:17 So just keep your hands straight, you know?
32:20 Or keep your wrist straight.
32:22 - Doris, she keeps a class in San Diego
32:29 and she says she just tried the Lived In extensions
32:33 and she loves them.
32:35 - Yay!
32:36 I actually had it in too when we first came out.
32:40 I like to try new, I don't know.
32:42 If I'm gonna put something on my clients,
32:44 I wanna try it before I, you know.
32:46 Obviously I didn't keep it because it's not my thing,
32:50 but you know, it was fun.
32:53 It was fun that I can feel how light it is
32:56 and how it is on my head.
32:58 So therefore I can relate to what my client is doing
33:03 and feeling, so.
33:05 - How long do the extensions last?
33:07 - You have to get it moved or re-taped every two months.
33:13 The hair itself lasts about six months to a year,
33:15 depending on what you do to it.
33:16 So if you do this every single day,
33:18 of course it probably won't last as long,
33:20 but if you were to do it, like,
33:22 not a lot of heat waving and all that stuff,
33:24 then, you know, a year.
33:25 Yeah, I say it depends,
33:28 but you have to come back to the salon every two months
33:31 to get it re-taped.
33:33 And the re-taping process is fricking awesome.
33:36 They usually come in, oops, sorry.
33:40 The tape and the backing usually comes in like this,
33:42 so it's already pre-cut
33:44 and all you have to do is peel off the old one
33:45 and replace it with this.
33:47 Very easy.
33:48 Sorry.
33:49 - And where is the hair source from?
33:51 - The hair source is from Mongolia.
33:53 And the reason why we use Mongolia hair
33:56 is because the waves,
33:58 it's in between straight and wavy,
34:02 or straight and curly.
34:04 So it fits with a lot of hair texture
34:07 versus Asian hair is just all straight,
34:09 versus like curly hair is all curly.
34:11 So this has a lot more blend to it.
34:13 So when it dries up,
34:14 it has more of a beach wave to it.
34:16 So I'm gonna go back to this.
34:20 This is Carlos, by the way.
34:22 He's my first assistant.
34:23 You guys should follow him,
34:25 he does great work as well.
34:27 Really great.
34:31 And this is Dan.
34:32 Oh, you guys can't see Dan, Dan is...
34:34 Oh yeah, he's in the mirror.
34:36 Hey, you know, it takes a village
34:40 and I have to say,
34:41 I am so happy for them
34:43 because I couldn't do it without them.
34:46 And, you know, it takes a lot of work, you know,
34:50 but I enjoy it.
34:51 Don't get too happy, just kidding.
34:56 JK, just kidding.
34:59 No, I gotta keep them on their toes,
35:00 but I, you know, I appreciate them.
35:02 You gotta appreciate people that works for you
35:04 and you gotta treat them well
35:06 because, you know, it's...
35:09 Makes everything happy.
35:12 I like happy environment.
35:14 - For those who are asking,
35:15 we're using hot tools
35:17 and the temperature is around 400.
35:20 - Not for her.
35:22 380?
35:24 - 380 for her.
35:25 - Depends, you know.
35:30 For Asian hair, I like to keep it up a little higher.
35:32 Just because...
35:33 Yeah, it actually depends too,
35:34 but it all depends on the hair texture,
35:36 how thick it is and how fine it is.
35:38 So this one, I'm gonna do...
35:44 So since he's doing the new,
35:45 I'm just gonna do the live-in to combine with both.
35:49 - A lot of people are asking about finishing products.
35:57 - Yes, coming up, coming up.
35:58 (scissors snipping)
36:01 Look at all these baby hair.
36:11 She just had a baby, that's why.
36:13 (laughing)
36:15 - Chelsea asks, "Where can Canadians buy those extensions?"
36:20 - On the website.
36:22 We'll give you a website in a little bit.
36:25 Oh yeah, duh.
36:29 This is the website, check it out.
36:30 So there you have it.
36:38 I like how it looks.
36:39 I don't know if you guys have seen it yet.
36:43 So...
36:45 Doesn't look like it's gonna mix well together,
36:51 but once you rough it up, it will.
36:52 It's really incredible.
36:55 So I like to use the Hollywood Waves,
37:00 and this comes in a cream.
37:01 So knowing her hair is on the finer side,
37:06 I use maybe about that much.
37:09 And what this does is helps create separation to the hair.
37:13 It actually gives it a little more bounce to it.
37:16 So it's different from like a texture pomade kind of deal,
37:20 which I'm gonna use afterwards too,
37:22 just to show you guys the differentness to it.
37:24 This gives it more like a polished look,
37:26 'cause I'm really into a little more polish,
37:29 roughness to it.
37:30 So maybe a tiny bit more, but that's the one.
37:33 And you wanna put it all over your hands,
37:38 like how you put on lotion,
37:40 because you don't wanna just put it here
37:42 and then go in here,
37:44 and it's all the concentrated products goes in.
37:47 So you put all over your hands,
37:48 so it'll be evenly distributed.
37:53 So I run it through her hair all the way through.
37:56 Would you say it's heavy?
38:00 Can I get, actually it's not.
38:02 Look at the shine on it.
38:05 It's really, that's why when it's like,
38:07 I always, if I don't know,
38:11 or if I'm using new products or something like that,
38:13 I always use a little bit at a time,
38:14 but this one, you can tell I use like,
38:17 pretty much like a quarter already
38:19 from the previous one to this one.
38:21 Um, it's very light.
38:24 Always, I don't know, I always put everything on my hands,
38:28 if it feels heavy, that usually leaves like a residue,
38:32 but this one doesn't.
38:33 So this is purely for separation.
38:49 See, it gives it more of like a piece-y look.
38:51 And her hair feels really soft.
39:06 I wish you guys can touch her hair.
39:07 Maybe that'll be the new technology
39:10 that you guys can actually feel the hair.
39:12 Yeah, like virtual reality.
39:17 That would be amazing.
39:18 (upbeat music)
39:21 See, it's not heavy because I have to put in
39:25 a little bit more into the hair.
39:27 And it moves, so maybe you can show her
39:33 in the mirror as well too.
39:35 There we go.
39:36 You see the movement?
39:37 And then, yeah, see with the extension,
39:45 it's hard to tell which one is not
39:47 and which one it is.
39:48 What do you think, Amy?
39:53 - I love it.
39:54 - Yay!
39:55 I heard you say that.
39:56 (Amy laughs)
39:59 Okay, so I'm gonna finish off with some next day hair.
40:06 Classic, classic, classic.
40:10 What this does, it gives more products,
40:11 more texture to the hair.
40:14 'Cause I like a little more grit to the hair.
40:17 Right now it's very fluffy.
40:20 And that's what I like about that product
40:21 is that it makes your hair really clean and fluffy.
40:25 But I'm gonna dirty it up a little more.
40:28 So I'm gonna shake this up, apply this all over her hair
40:31 because I'm gonna actually put her hair up.
40:33 I just want a little more grit to it.
40:35 All over.
40:39 And then some on the roots.
40:44 (spraying)
40:46 Make sure you shake this up really well.
40:50 And it smells pleasant.
40:51 Love the way it smells.
40:53 Right?
40:55 It's not overwhelming.
40:56 - Is that product similar to a spray wax?
41:07 - Mm, it's less waxy.
41:09 It's more on the dry shampoo-y kind of deal, you know?
41:14 Less waxy, 'cause waxy is sticky.
41:19 This is not sticky, this is more powdery, you know?
41:22 So that's the difference.
41:24 Yeah, it's like a cross-breed between texture spray
41:30 and, well it is a texture spray,
41:32 but it's more like dry shampoo-y kind of deal, you know?
41:37 And I like the fact that I can layer it a lot more.
41:40 - How would you say that spray behaves after a few days?
41:46 - That's a good question.
41:49 - Do you think it'll be too gritty
41:51 that she'll have to wash it sooner?
41:53 - I don't think so.
41:54 I think if, 'cause one time I didn't shake this up
41:58 really well, it's really, there's powder in it.
42:03 So I don't think it'll get too gritty.
42:06 'Cause when it's more wax, it might get more gritty,
42:08 so this probably gets more, I don't know,
42:13 maybe a little more separation to it, you know?
42:16 That's a good question, I'm gonna ask my client about that.
42:19 So that's a really good question.
42:21 I love all these questions,
42:22 because you only get to know the product,
42:25 you only get to know your craft more than anything,
42:27 so it's really good.
42:28 So there you have it.
42:32 And then one last thing, I'm a little obsessed
42:33 with this product, my friend's, Jen Atkins' product,
42:38 Way, it's matte pomade.
42:43 So I'm gonna get a little more grit into her hair.
42:46 Just gonna use this up.
42:48 - You were saying hi from Chili.
42:53 - Aww.
42:54 And that, I'm just gonna use it very sparingly
42:59 all over the hair.
43:01 Just really go in and just grit the hair.
43:04 Hi, Chili.
43:07 You seem to have gone in for holidays.
43:09 But no.
43:11 It's too far.
43:16 - Cool.
43:23 - There we go.
43:25 Now really got in that lived in look.
43:30 And the reason why I came up with that whole lived in look
43:33 is that, you know when you get your hair cut,
43:35 or you get your hair done and it looks better the next day,
43:38 or the haircut looks better the week after?
43:42 And that's what it means, like it's been lived in.
43:44 So I kind of lived it in for you with products
43:48 and texture and cuts and everything, so, you know.
43:52 All right.
43:56 So there you have it.
44:00 With a combination of new and lived in.
44:03 Dan, come over here so you can see it from the mirror.
44:07 And then sometimes, you know like sometimes
44:18 when the extension gets really bulky in the bottom?
44:21 This one doesn't because it's pre-tapered.
44:24 Meaning, if you look at the hair span,
44:26 half of it is full and it tapers out a little bit more.
44:31 So it means it looks more natural, you know.
44:34 Versus when you get extensions,
44:36 like the full length of it's extensions
44:38 and you have to go in and texturize it and cut it
44:40 so it blends in with the rest of the hair.
44:42 This one is pre-textured, so it's really great.
44:45 And all I have to do is just cut the ends off.
44:46 And even cutting the ends off, the ends don't seem so blunt.
44:51 And because when it's so blunt,
44:53 it doesn't match her hair texture.
44:55 (upbeat music)
44:58 Cool, alrighty.
45:00 So I'm gonna put her hair up just a little quick.
45:04 I'll do it because you know, holidays here
45:07 and then you know, we actually have a holiday party
45:10 the next week.
45:11 So people always wanna put their hair up, something easy.
45:14 And I think, gosh, everything goes these days.
45:18 It can be up, it can be back, it can be like whichever,
45:21 you know, and I love the combination of like
45:23 high end versus low end, you know.
45:26 You can wear something like really nice
45:27 and then you can have your hair a little more messy
45:29 and it's just like, it makes it more,
45:31 it makes it more cool, you know, less uptight.
45:36 So I'm gonna use some hair accessory
45:40 from my client, from actually my friend.
45:44 And these are her new line, it's so cool, so, so awesome.
45:51 I'll show you, here's the hair.
45:54 So here's a really good one that we can use.
46:05 I'm gonna use this one, which is a headband
46:11 and it's gonna tie around and become a choker.
46:15 Really, really cool.
46:16 So I'm gonna separate the front
46:20 and the back.
46:21 Oh, it's my friend, actually she works here as well.
46:25 I'm Tracy, Trace, right?
46:27 Trace Henson, Henson and Company.
46:31 And you guys can get it here and stuff like that.
46:34 So I'm gonna do a low pony.
46:43 Since I have the texture in, it's really great
46:47 to have all these different texture in already
46:50 and it makes it easier.
46:51 Rubber band this.
46:54 Hi.
46:59 All right, pull this up a little more,
47:08 something really quick and easy.
47:09 All right, and this goes.
47:13 (upbeat music)
47:16 And this velvet, love, love, love the texture of it.
47:21 So, it looks right?
47:34 - Yeah.
47:35 - Okay.
47:36 - Can we unfold it?
47:36 - Yeah, please.
47:37 So you're just gonna wrap this around.
47:44 (upbeat music)
47:47 I'm actually gonna secure it real fast
47:56 with some bobby pins.
47:57 You don't have to worry about the extensions
48:10 getting into the way.
48:13 (upbeat music)
48:15 Does that hurt?
48:16 Okay, nevermind.
48:18 Be careful.
48:20 Oh, you can let it down.
48:23 Do that later.
48:28 And then, just secure this real quickly with that.
48:39 (upbeat music)
48:42 And then, you know what's great about this thing
48:50 is that she lets, there's a little space in here
48:55 that you can actually pin through it.
48:58 So it stays.
49:01 So make sure that it just cross.
49:06 (upbeat music)
49:09 Goes in here.
49:14 See, it opens up a little bit.
49:18 I'll fix that in a bit.
49:29 But anyways, so this part here, I'm just gonna go in.
49:34 Dan will bring it over here and twist it in.
49:37 Okay, just something very easy.
49:51 And then,
49:57 pin this out.
50:03 (upbeat music)
50:05 Make sure this goes in.
50:16 Okay.
50:18 And then, this becomes the choker in front.
50:22 You can make it tighter or not.
50:31 (laughing)
50:34 I think this looks really good when you have like a,
50:39 whatchamacallit, like, let's put this in a bow.
50:43 Like a white button up shirt.
50:47 I hope Trace approved.
50:59 She's like, "No, you are wrong!"
51:02 I like it like that.
51:04 And then you can let this down a little bit more.
51:07 And a lot of times I leave this part really nice and soft
51:21 'cause it's more romantic.
51:22 (upbeat music)
51:25 And then make sure that all this part's been tucked in.
51:34 And then you wanna crisscross this so it
51:36 blends on the front out.
51:41 And you can just grab that black pen.
51:43 Grab a hairpin.
51:49 (upbeat music)
51:51 All right, last but not least.
52:18 More hairpins.
52:20 I love these hairpins because
52:22 they don't go in and they anchor really well.
52:28 If you guys ever get a chance to get some,
52:33 there's so many different types of hairpins.
52:36 I really like this one a lot
52:38 because it has a little bit of a grit to it.
52:40 These are Japanese hairpins.
52:42 They're incredible.
52:43 They come in different colors.
52:44 I also like these ones as well,
52:46 especially when it comes to like this kind of texture.
52:48 So if I really want something,
52:50 but you guys can see I'm using silver one.
52:56 It goes in, it almost feels like it grits the hair.
52:59 It's like sawing it off.
53:01 It's really, really awesome.
53:02 It's really nice and tight.
53:04 So you can get it at the Japanese market.
53:06 Oh yeah, that one's going in too.
53:13 So.
53:16 (laughing)
53:18 I like this better.
53:33 - Yeah. - Cool.
53:34 Alrighty.
53:36 So.
53:36 There you have it.
53:43 I love this look.
53:44 It's pretty cute.
53:46 I mean, maybe sometimes I wouldn't do that.
53:48 I would just do this and.
53:49 I think this is better.
53:56 Maybe no choker.
53:57 Maybe 'cause I don't know how to do a choker thing
54:01 'cause I don't really love chokers.
54:03 Maybe back in the 90s I did,
54:04 but like, I think this is nice.
54:07 I like this better.
54:09 So.
54:10 Well, that was fun.
54:13 And I would keep on going.
54:15 Except Carlos, he'd be like,
54:17 "Okay, you gotta cut it out."
54:19 I don't wanna bore you guys, but stay tuned.
54:21 I wanna have a lot more of this coming out 2018.
