00:00 - Amika's Global Artistic Director.
00:02 We're gonna be doing a beautiful, glam, retro wave,
00:06 something beautiful for the red carpet for you today.
00:08 I have my gorgeous model here, Ellie, from Ellie Maxx SFX,
00:13 and we're gonna be doing an amazing tutorial for you.
00:15 So, I also want you guys to tune in
00:17 because we have a great giveaway happening.
00:20 So all you have to do is tag your hairstylist BFF
00:23 in the comments, and at the very end,
00:25 we're gonna be giving away one of Amika's newest tools,
00:28 part of our armory collection,
00:30 and we're gonna give one to the winner
00:31 and to the person that they tagged.
00:33 So stay tuned for that, okay?
00:35 So let's get started with the technique.
00:38 So, as you can see, I prepped our model here in advance.
00:42 So we curled all of her hair in advance,
00:44 we left out some sections that we can do for you live.
00:48 So what we wanted to do first is create a nice, deep part,
00:53 and the deep part is really going to indicate
00:55 that this is a retro look.
00:57 So when you're doing a deep part,
00:59 you wanna make sure the part is nice and clean, okay?
01:04 So I like to use the tail of my comb
01:07 or the point of my comb to really get in there
01:10 and make sure the part is super clean, okay?
01:14 And also, you wanna make sure
01:15 that the location of the part is accurate.
01:17 For a nice, deep side retro wave part,
01:20 you wanna go right at the peak of the brow.
01:24 So you're gonna start at the peak of the brow, go back,
01:27 and that's where the location of your part should be, okay?
01:30 So again, we prepped all the hair in advance,
01:34 and I'm gonna show you in the back here.
01:37 We curled it and then we pinned it so that it can set
01:40 and so that the curl can last.
01:43 And we curled it pretty randomly,
01:46 like I take random sections with my fingers.
01:48 We kinda like the hair to fall naturally
01:51 and not be too super perfect.
01:53 I wanted to give a more modern, retro feel,
01:56 if that makes any sense, so it's not too muscany.
01:59 We're gonna give a nice, modern finish to our retro waves.
02:04 Okay?
02:05 So I'm gonna turn her around
02:05 and we're gonna get started on the actual waving technique.
02:09 I'm gonna come close for this one.
02:11 So what we wanna do is I'm gonna grab
02:18 some of the Amika Heat Defense Serum.
02:21 I'm gonna go maybe half a pump, right?
02:25 (thuds)
02:27 And we're gonna distribute it
02:29 throughout this section of hair here.
02:31 Now for the direction of your curl.
02:40 I started my curl on her right side
02:42 and I had it all coming in towards the face.
02:46 So if it's on the right side,
02:47 we're curling in this direction the entire time.
02:51 By the time you get to her left side,
02:54 you're curling away from the face.
02:55 So the left side is away
02:57 and the right side is in towards the face, okay?
03:01 I'm gonna show you exactly how we're curling.
03:04 I'm gonna take my section here.
03:05 Okay?
03:12 Smooth, and you see how I just grabbed it with my finger?
03:16 I just literally sectioned it off with my finger.
03:19 The reason why, again, I don't wanna see lines
03:22 through her hair, so I'm not taking the comb
03:25 to create neat partings throughout.
03:27 Detangle this piece here.
03:30 You're gonna need to use the Amika Chameleon for this.
03:34 So this is, again, one of our newest tools.
03:37 It's called the Chameleon.
03:39 It's a five-piece set with five interchangeable pieces.
03:42 So it's a five-in-one.
03:43 Instead of having five different cords
03:46 for five different tools, you have one cord,
03:49 one base, one tool, but you have five different attachments.
03:53 So you have many sizes that come in a really cute kit.
03:56 So I'm gonna go, and I'm gonna take my wand,
04:01 and I'm gonna point it down.
04:03 You never wanna point up for this
04:05 'cause you're not curling up, you're curling down.
04:08 So every time you're doing a wave,
04:10 you want the point of your curler to be at the floor.
04:15 So I'm gonna take the hair.
04:19 I'm gonna over-direct it out.
04:21 I'm gonna hold it with my hand here.
04:24 And you can see that my thumb
04:26 is on top of this section of hair.
04:28 I'm gonna place the wand behind the section,
04:33 and I'm going flat and twisted,
04:37 and flat and twisted,
04:42 and flat and twisted,
04:45 and flat, twisted, flat.
04:49 When I get to the very end, I'm gonna hold on a second
04:52 because this very tail end here,
04:55 it doesn't need as much time
04:57 as this thick sectioning of hair up here.
04:59 It needs less time.
05:01 So we don't wanna burn her hair off,
05:02 so we'll wait until this is almost done,
05:04 which is right about now,
05:06 and then we'll wrap the end in.
05:08 Wait a few seconds,
05:11 and then I'll let it go in my hand.
05:15 And you see how I caught it in my hand here?
05:17 I'm gonna bring it up,
05:19 and then I'll just secure it with a pin.
05:25 We're gonna go ahead and take another section.
05:28 Again, just sectioning with our fingers.
05:31 Over-direct out.
05:36 Okay, so like 90 degree angle.
05:40 I'm gonna hold the hair.
05:44 You're gonna be about two inches,
05:46 two and a half inches from the root
05:48 when you're doing this technique.
05:49 If you're too far out,
05:51 you won't be able to create the twist.
05:53 So let's say I'm far out here and I'm doing a twist.
05:56 This is all flat.
05:57 You didn't get your twist because you're too far out.
06:00 To create the twist, you need to be nice and close.
06:05 So I'm back here, flat, twist,
06:10 flat, twist, flat, twist,
06:15 flat, twist, and hold.
06:18 And you see I'm just touching it with my fingers.
06:25 When it's too hot for me to touch with my fingers,
06:27 I know it's too hot for the hair, so I know it's ready.
06:30 Again, we waited till the very last second for the ends.
06:33 Let it drop into our hand.
06:39 And then we're gonna go ahead
06:40 and pin it with a pin curl clip.
06:44 You can pin it from below, pin it from above.
06:48 Whatever works for you is fine.
06:50 And our last section here, I'm gonna come on this side.
06:54 So when people do this technique,
06:58 they're like, "Oh, I'm left-handed,"
06:59 or "I'm right-handed, so I can't do it."
07:01 You can do it with either hand.
07:03 So I was using my left hand before to hold the chameleon.
07:07 This time, I'm gonna use my right hand to hold it
07:11 because I kind of wanna have a better vantage point
07:14 for this curl here.
07:16 Just detangling with my fingers.
07:19 Again, hold about two, two and a half inches
07:23 away from the root.
07:24 Curler is down, flat, and twist,
07:29 flat, twist, flat, twist, flat.
07:37 And again, remember that little end
07:38 does not need as much time as this hair up here.
07:42 So hold off on that.
07:43 Now it's almost ready,
07:45 so that means I can wrap my end around.
07:47 And now I can just let it drop into my hand.
07:54 You see, I don't let it stretch out
07:58 because I want it to keep that nice curl,
08:02 and I want it to cool in this form.
08:05 So I'm not gonna let it drop just yet.
08:07 We're gonna go over to the front,
08:09 and we're gonna do the other side of the part.
08:13 Come nice and close.
08:14 Turn your head down for me.
08:17 Okay, again, you wanna over-direct.
08:23 So when you're doing these sections onto the side,
08:26 you're over-directing out about 90 degrees.
08:29 When you're doing the sections on the top,
08:32 you're gonna go straight up, okay?
08:34 That means you're holding the hair straight up.
08:36 That's what's gonna give that nice lift
08:39 that a really cool retro wave has.
08:41 So I'm holding the hair straight up.
08:44 And then we're going in with the chameleon.
08:50 This is a 25 millimeter attachment that I'm using.
08:54 But you're gonna have it in front of the section.
08:59 Flat, twist.
09:03 Flat, twist.
09:06 Flat, twist.
09:08 Flat.
09:09 And again, we're gonna hold.
09:11 Once this is done, then we know to wrap our ends.
09:15 And wrap.
09:20 We're holding, and then we can let that go.
09:24 You see how I just slide it out, okay?
09:27 And then we're just gonna pin it in.
09:36 (upbeat music)
09:39 And then we're gonna move on to this section right behind it.
09:43 Straight up.
09:50 I'm holding the hair.
09:55 Again, you're gonna be about two inches away from the roof.
09:58 Flat, twist.
10:01 Flat, twist.
10:04 And you see, my fingers don't move.
10:06 It's literally only my wrist
10:08 that's moving for this technique.
10:10 And there are no gaps in the hair.
10:13 So no gaps at all.
10:16 It's just hair.
10:17 There are no gaps between each row.
10:19 Slide it out.
10:23 And then pin it.
10:32 And we're pinning on base.
10:34 Okay?
10:38 And our last section here.
10:41 Again, we're holding straight out.
10:46 Up.
10:48 Holding the hair two sections.
10:51 And all you're seeing is me,
10:52 like let's say this was the curler.
10:54 All you're seeing is my wrist move, okay?
10:58 I'm not readjusting the hair in my fingers
11:01 as I go about it.
11:02 It's just all in the wrist.
11:04 Flat, twist.
11:07 Flat, twist.
11:09 Flat, twist.
11:10 Flat, twist.
11:12 And no gaps in the hair.
11:13 And the very last end.
11:19 And then we can pull it out.
11:22 I'm gonna secure this one too.
11:30 So we've curled all of her hair.
11:33 Now we're gonna start taking our pin curl clips out.
11:36 And I wanna start with the parts that I curled first,
11:39 which is gonna be the back.
11:40 So I'll have her bend her head down.
11:43 And I'll start taking that down.
11:44 Go ahead and take those out.
11:49 Taking our pin curl clips out.
11:58 And for her hair, I only use like one pin curl clip
12:02 per section.
12:03 But if the client's hair is thicker
12:05 or if you feel like you need more,
12:06 you can totally just use as many as you need,
12:10 as long as you're getting the job done,
12:12 which is holding the hair up.
12:13 Okay, pulling out.
12:18 And pulling out.
12:28 And pulling out.
12:29 Again, we're going by what we did first.
12:36 This was last, so we're gonna move on to this next.
12:40 Taking the clips out.
12:43 And the reason why we're clipping
12:47 is just because her hair is fine
12:49 and I just really wanna make sure that her curl holds.
12:54 So that's why we use the pin curl clips.
12:56 It's fine as well.
12:57 Okay.
13:01 And we did this last,
13:02 so we're gonna leave this for the very last.
13:04 You see how well the chameleon really gets that curl set?
13:16 It really gets in there.
13:18 It has infrared heat technology
13:19 to really make sure that the curl is well done
13:22 and heats the hair from the inside out.
13:24 So I'm gonna take these top sections out.
13:26 Okay.
13:31 And we're ready to brush her out now.
13:35 So we're gonna use a little bit of product to do that.
13:38 Let's see what we're gonna go with.
13:41 We're gonna go with the Amika Silk 'n Up Dry Conditioner.
13:45 I like to use it because it's kind of like,
13:47 I would say softness in a can.
13:50 It's like a fabric softener.
13:52 A fabric softener for your hair.
13:55 It really adds a nice touch.
13:58 This is for when you don't necessarily need,
14:03 you don't wanna put an oil or a cream,
14:05 but you need something,
14:07 the Amika Silk 'n Up Dry Conditioner is perfect.
14:10 And it goes well with the dry shampoo, so perfect pair.
14:13 So we're gonna take our brush to begin the brushing.
14:17 And we're gonna brush in the direction of the curl.
14:21 So this curl is going away from the face,
14:23 so we're gonna brush away from the face.
14:26 By the time we get to the front,
14:27 it's gonna be curling in towards the face,
14:29 so that's the direction we're gonna brush in.
14:31 Okay?
14:33 I'm going to this side.
14:34 And I'm just brushing.
14:37 Really just wanna get in there.
14:41 I want to loosen up this wave as much as possible.
14:45 'Cause again, we want a nice modern finish to it.
14:48 So I'm really getting in there.
14:52 'Cause I want it to be nice and fluffy.
14:54 I'm gonna go around to the front.
14:59 I'm getting under.
15:10 Spin her to the side.
15:16 (baby crying)
15:18 You're really seeing that wave form.
15:24 I'm gonna make sure you get in there
15:30 so you can get everything.
15:31 So now you wanna start to kind of use your comb,
15:42 your tail comb and your brush to accentuate the wave.
15:46 Kind of carve out the wave that's there.
15:50 I'm gonna come around to the top here.
15:59 And I'm using a fine tooth tail comb for this.
16:01 Around to the front.
16:11 (upbeat music)
16:13 This is where like the fine tuning comes in.
16:21 You just take your time to perfect the finish.
16:27 You see she has a bit of a bang here.
16:34 You wanna try to blend that in as much as possible.
16:38 (upbeat music)
16:41 Around to the other side here.
16:48 I like to tuck this side behind the ear.
16:53 I think it's a bit more flattering that way.
16:55 And then I'll come in and accentuate my wave.
17:01 (upbeat music)
17:03 You can also go in with some hairspray
17:20 as you do that fine tuning.
17:22 I can go right in.
17:28 (upbeat music)
17:31 And you see how like some of the ends
17:35 have a little bit of texture.
17:37 I personally kind of like that a little bit.
17:40 I don't necessarily want every hair in place.
17:44 And that's another reason why I'm using
17:48 the Mika Touchable hairspray
17:50 because it gives that still that movement, that modern feel.
17:55 (upbeat music)
17:58 Then I'm gonna go around to the other side
18:01 and do the same thing.
18:03 Come around to her bang.
18:08 And right here.
18:18 Take my tail comb so I can get on the inside.
18:25 (upbeat music)
18:27 And then we can do the ends.
18:37 This is a great look for your brides,
18:52 people that are going to a special event,
18:54 or if you just have a client
18:56 that's just an everyday glam girl, that's fine too.
18:59 I think Ellie would wear this every day.
19:03 For the very front, I'm gonna go in
19:07 with a little Amika Headstrong hairspray
19:11 'cause I wanna make sure that her bang piece
19:14 and any flyaways stay down.
19:16 (upbeat music)
19:19 Again, I don't wanna do Headstrong at the ends
19:24 'cause I like a little bit of that movement.
19:27 I'm gonna add just one more thing,
19:34 which is the Heat Defense Pound.
19:39 Yes, it's a heat defense product,
19:41 but I also like to use it as a styling product
19:43 just for a little added shine.
19:45 So I'm just gonna pat this in.
19:47 Pat it into her ends here.
19:52 (upbeat music)
19:56 Okay.
20:03 And there you have the finished glam waved look.
20:10 Get a nice frontal view of her.
20:14 She looks fabulous, doesn't she?
20:15 Ready for the red carpet or just everyday fabulous.
20:18 Guys, we do have a special offer happening.
20:21 You can check for the code in the comments.
20:23 We're gonna put the code in there in the comments.
20:25 If you want 10% off your purchase,
20:28 you'd have to spend $90 or more,
20:29 or for 15% off your purchase,
20:31 you would be spending 150 or more.
20:33 So definitely you'll want to cash in on that.
20:36 And this goes for any tools
20:38 that are part of the Armory collection,
20:40 including the new Amika Chameleon,
20:43 my new best friend.
20:44 You guys, you didn't see the case.
20:45 It's like the cutest case ever.
20:48 So it holds all of the attachments.
20:51 It has a really cool glove.
20:53 And it's just super cute in general.
20:58 So we're gonna pick a winner
21:02 and we're gonna put the name of the winner in the comments.
21:05 So stay tuned for that.
21:06 If you guys want to purchase anything
21:08 from the Armory collection,
21:09 you want to purchase the Chameleon,
21:11 definitely check out saloncentric.com for your purchases.
21:15 And that's gonna be available as of tomorrow.
21:17 Thank you guys so much for tuning in.
21:19 Again, my name is Naima Thon,
21:20 Amika's Global Artistic Director,
21:22 and I'm here with Ellie from Ellie Max SFX.
21:25 And thanks for tuning in.
