00:00 Hello! Hi everyone! Let's just get this set up. It's Hayley from Pearl's Pinup Parlor
00:17 back again. Hi everybody! I'm just linking up the laptop so I can read your comments.
00:27 Just bear with me. How's everyone doing? Hi! Hello! There we go. Right. Technology. We're
00:48 in business. Yay! Oh hi! I can see everyone's comments. Hi Karen! Hi Emma! Hi Sharon! Ashley!
00:59 Hi Claire! Amazing. Just give people a second to join. How is everybody? Happy hump day!
01:15 Looking forward to the weekend? I am. I'm bridesmaid for one of my oldest and dearest
01:21 friends at the weekend. Very excited. Okay. So today, don't be alarmed, I have got some
01:35 quite extreme makeup going on here. If you hadn't guessed, this is a 1960s look which
01:44 I don't get the opportunity to do all that much and I would love to do more. To be honest,
01:52 not that many people ask for it in terms of styling. I guess, I don't know, maybe 10%
02:03 of the type of hairstyles I get asked to do would be 1960s. It's generally 1940s, 1950s,
02:11 occasionally 20s and quite rarely 60s. So I'm looking forward to doing a little demo.
02:18 Hey Heather! Yay the 60s! Yes Faith, we're doing the 60s. It's sometimes, it's maybe
02:29 not the most popular decade out of them all but there are a lot of people who love the
02:34 60s I know so hopefully this will be helpful to some people tonight. And also, if you're
02:41 not a fan of the 60s, you might be after this because if you've ever struggled to do your
02:46 hair in a vintage style, maybe the victory rolls are quite tricky for you, then this
02:54 might be an easier one for you because it's just all about the backcombing and the height
03:00 and not necessarily fiddly bits and neatness necessarily. So I defy anyone to fail at a
03:12 beehive. So yeah, gotta love the 60s, absolutely. Right, I'm going to get going because last
03:18 time I think I waffled on a little bit too much and I will try and keep this video under
03:23 an hour which I failed to do measurably last time but anyway. So, to begin, backcombing,
03:31 it works better on slightly older hair so ideally you want to have washed your hair
03:37 the day before or even further before is fine. If you've got freshly washed hair it's not
03:42 a problem. I failed in my planning and this hair was washed this morning. Not ideal but
03:52 we're going to do some tricks and tips to help with getting the backcombing in there.
03:59 So, first one, if you've got hair a few days old or if it's freshly washed like mine, then
04:07 dry shampoo is going to help a lot. It's going to add some texture and some grip if you've
04:13 got quite silky hair. I didn't put conditioner on mine because I knew that that was probably
04:18 not ideal for my hair type with a beehive. So, dry shampoo is good for adding some grip.
04:26 Also, if your hair is a few days old then obviously dry shampoo is going to be good
04:31 for absorbing any oils or anything that might be going on in there. So, the first thing
04:35 I'm going to do is just spray through this. Will it work with fine hair, Becca? Yes, it's
04:44 great for fine hair because you can add in height and volume that you perhaps don't have
04:50 day to day and just go with what matches your hair type. So, if you've got fine hair then
04:59 backcomb the life out of it and smooth over and just see how it naturally will fall. If
05:05 you haven't got enough hair to kind of make a massive tall one, that's fine, go for a
05:11 shorter one but you'll still have that style and that look which is the most important
05:15 thing. So, I'm just using Batiste dry shampoo in Rose Gold which is just a fragrance but
05:27 it's not a coloured one. I know you can get all different colours and things now. Will
05:31 it work with sewn in hair extensions, Kerry? I would avoid backcombing the life out of
05:38 hair extensions in general because you're obviously going to have to be quite gentle
05:43 at brushing it back out again. So, I would suggest maybe some hair padding instead and
05:49 protect your hair extensions that way and put your hair over the padding. I don't have
05:56 padding with me right now to show you but maybe on another demo we could do that. Okay,
06:03 so dry shampoo is in and just all over and that's just going to add some texture to it
06:08 before we get started. And then the first thing I like to do is actually sort out the
06:13 bottom half of my hair and then we'll go back and do the beehive after. It doesn't matter
06:19 which way round you do it but if you want all your hair up you can either do the beehive
06:24 and then do the back of it up or you can do the back of it first and do the beehive over,
06:29 whichever works for you. You might also want to do a beehive and just leave the back of
06:34 the hair down, maybe put some curls in it. Okay, so what I'm going to do is just part
06:41 just above my ear going straight back in a horizontal line and I'm just going to twist
06:51 that up and out of the way to begin with. Hi everyone! Now, backcombing, I tend to prefer
07:07 an actual backcombing brush. It's a bristle brush and it's quite skinny. You can also
07:15 just use a normal fine tooth comb. I find either of those work quite well. And what
07:22 I'm going to do is backcomb the back section. So, if you can see my sectioning, I've literally
07:29 just sectioned ear to ear straight across and I've just got this little bit left at
07:37 the bottom. This is also good for all different hair lengths. I mean, you can do this on super
07:49 short hair and literally just backcomb the top and have the shorter lengths, either maybe
07:56 a slight wave through them or just leave them as they are. Super long hair this works for
08:00 as well. If your hair is super duper long and the weight of it is pulling out some of
08:08 the backcombing, you can kind of ball up sections of your hair. So maybe at the crown, put it
08:14 in a ponytail, lightly backcomb and ball it up and then put the rest of the hair over
08:19 the top. Or you might just be fine using this technique anyway. But beehives are just such
08:27 a good go to. They're quick and easy. It'll probably take me a little bit longer because
08:31 I'm chatting. They're good for clean hair or dirty hair. So I'm just backcombing that
08:44 whole back section. And I don't worry too much about this very back because I generally
08:54 will wear a headscarf around it. If you've got longer hair, you might find that you can
08:59 create some lovely swirls around the beehive and around the grips at the back. My hair's
09:06 not quite long enough to do that. I'm just about going to get it into a twist, which
09:09 is what I'm aiming for. So I don't worry too much about neatness. So once it's lightly
09:16 backcombed, well it's not really lightly backcombed at all is it? Quite heavily backcombed to
09:20 bulk it out. If you've got quite long or thick hair, you maybe don't need to do this much
09:24 backcombing. I just literally start at the root and work my way along to the tips for
09:31 this bit. So what I'm going to do is gather up one side. Your hair is on your shoulders.
09:39 Is it possible to, possible then to make this, yeah, mine's only just below my shoulders.
09:47 What you maybe won't be able to do is pin up the back, but you could definitely try
09:53 to pin up the back, but it's not essential. They did all kinds of different styles with
09:59 beehives. There's quite a lot of creativity in this. So what I'm going to do is just scrape
10:07 across to one side and grab some bobby pins, hair grips. I do like a stronghold grip, but
10:24 just whatever you can find. And I'm just going to pin from the very bottom, working my way
10:32 up in a crisscross pattern, locking the pins together. Thank you, Mandy. This is the first
10:46 time I've done this eye makeup on me and I was pleasantly surprised actually. I'd like
10:51 an opportunity to do it again. So if you can roughly see, I've just pinned it flat on one
11:05 side with the rest of it. I'm just going to do a twist and pin it up and out the way.
11:16 And at this point, I'll probably introduce a bit of hairspray just to add some hold.
11:22 So I'm just using a lighthold hairspray to begin with. So that's a VO5 high volume. They
11:36 didn't actually tell you what the hold is, but I find it's quite a lighthold. I'm just
11:46 going to lightly smooth over the outside of that section that is going to be wrapped across
11:50 and that you're going to see. I apologise that you won't be able to see a lot of the
11:55 detail in the back, but it's business in the back and party at the front with this, so
12:00 don't worry too much. I've just literally gathered it up almost into a ball and I'm
12:07 just going to take a few pins and grab the edge and push across.
12:19 Hey Tablo! Hi Thelma! Right, so when I feel that I've got most of it up and out the way,
12:44 a little bit's falling down there. So that back section, I do have a mirror because it
13:01 would be helpful for me to actually see to. Okay, so now the back of it's out the way,
13:15 I'm going to let down the top section. And with the front, you can do what you like.
13:28 I mean fringes, bangs, were really popular in the 60s, so again, a beehive is really
13:35 good for ladies who've got fringes and maybe don't know which era to go for if you're
13:42 looking for a vintage style for your hair. Maybe you don't have enough hair to do victory
13:47 rolls behind a fringe or something like that, a beehive is brilliant for that. If you've
13:51 got a longer fringe, it's the kind of Bridget Bardot look, isn't it? Or if you don't have
13:57 a fringe, they also would have had all of the hair up in a beehive or perhaps having
14:03 a side parting with some of it across. It was really creative, so again, whatever's
14:08 going to suit your hair type is ideal for this. Now before I start with backcombing
14:14 and getting it all a bit crazy, what I'm going to do is, I'm doing a beehive, Deb. A 1960s
14:28 beehive. I'm just sectioning off my fringe area. I'll just go slightly further than my
14:43 parting. Okay, so what I'm going to do at the end is leave down this fringe area and
14:52 have a curl in it. So while I'm doing the beehive, I'm going to curl this and leave
14:58 it to cool so that it has longer to hold that curl in. So I'm just going to spray on some
15:06 heat protection. That's the Penrahot spray, which is a heat protector but also really
15:14 good at holding the curl as well I've found. Just brush it through. I just use a tong for
15:27 this just to add a nice bit of curl to it, a nice bit of movement to the hair. I think
15:43 it's a bit of a softer look as well rather than just leaving it straight. Just feel how
15:54 hot that is. It feels nice and warm. If you can, catch the curl rather than letting it
16:02 drop will help to hold the heat in and the structure. And then wind it back up and I'm
16:10 just going to pin that while we do the rest with a pink outlet. Okay, I'll put another
16:21 one in in case because it's about to get swallowed up by the backcombing. We need to make that
16:27 bit separate. So now for the fun bit. So all the rest of this hair that is left out now
16:34 is going to be backcombed. You can go as crazy as you like with this. Obviously the 60s were
16:41 known for quite extreme beehives. The higher the better. So yeah, it's up to you. But I
16:50 try and go as long as big as I can, but taking into account how long my hair is because I
16:55 do actually need to get a couple of pins in the back. So I'll kind of do as much as the
17:00 length will allow me to do. So before I get going with that, another product that I would
17:08 recommend is a texturising powder, a root powder it's sometimes called. This one's just
17:15 by VO5 and if you haven't used it before, it's hard to explain, but it's almost like
17:20 a gummy texture. It's a little bit more extreme than dry shampoo and even just using this
17:32 on its own can give quite a lot of volume to roots. I like using it on ladies who've
17:37 got shorter hair who want some volume in with some curls maybe, rather than putting in backcombing.
17:45 So I just put some of this around the crown area where most of the backcombing will be
17:51 and give it a rub. It is white so you do need to make sure if you've got dark hair that
17:59 it is quite well massaged in, otherwise you can see the root powder. So just a word of
18:05 warning. Backcombing for a beehive, you can backcomb at the back and working your way
18:11 to the front. That way it will keep out of your eyes which is obviously nice to have,
18:18 but personally I prefer to work at the front, flop it over my face and keep going towards
18:24 the back because that way you're not flattening any of that backcombing before you're ready
18:30 to pin. So just try and narrow it with that one, see what works for you. So I'm going
18:36 to work at the very front to begin with, taking quite small sections, probably about an inch
18:44 in depth and no wider than the bristles on your brush. And I'm going to really focus
18:51 properly on this backcombing, unlike the back section. So backcombing is kind of like a
18:57 C motion, going in and out from the bottom all the way up. With my beehive I'm going
19:02 to do pretty much to the tip. I'm not doing it quick, I'm doing it slow and carefully
19:08 so I can really feel if I've got enough backcombing in at the roots. You can leave this very front
19:17 section completely out so that you can smooth it over, but personally I prefer to backcomb
19:22 everything and then go back through and just smooth it over. I think I haven't got a huge
19:27 amount of hair, if I did then maybe I would do that. And also I will start using a light
19:34 hold hairspray again, just between these backcombing sections, which will also help the backcombing
19:40 grip. Because this is all going to be hidden, you can backcomb on the front and the back
19:53 if you want to, especially if you've found you've taken too much hair in your section.
19:57 So you really do want it to be quite extreme. That's how you know you've done a good backcomb,
20:04 if it stands up on end. You're going to see less and less of my face now, it's like
20:16 isn't it. The 1960s make me think of my Nan, who was an absolute babe, still is actually,
20:35 and she would go on a Friday to get her beehive put in, in the hair salon, it was a right
20:40 social night with all her friends, and the beehive would last until the next Friday when
20:46 they just went and had it washed and put straight back in. She said if she had an itch that
20:55 she'd use a knitting needle to get into the beehive. Right so I'm on the very back section
21:05 now. Hi Dawna from Idaho, does it damage your hair Faith is asking. I backcomb a lot and
21:18 I haven't had a problem with breakage or anything like that, but I don't have particularly damaged
21:24 or dry hair. I think if you do then you might need to be extra careful with it, but I think
21:30 the most important part is how you get it out of your hair. Putting it in carefully
21:37 in sections that way is the gentler way of doing it rather than the really rough technique,
21:43 but when it comes to getting it out just use a lot of conditioner and gently comb it through,
21:49 starting at the ends and working your way to the roots while it's wet and it's still
21:51 got the conditioner in. Most of it will just wash out, so you'll be fine. You probably
22:00 wouldn't want to put a beehive in and out every single day, but the good thing about
22:05 a beehive is that you can recycle it for a couple of days or so if you wanted to. So
22:12 I've now done from my fringe area all the way back to my crown. I'll just turn so you
22:18 can see. Pretty big! Now I'm just going to go... No, it doesn't hurt though, not at all.
22:30 No. If it hurts then you're probably being a little bit heavy handed with the backcombing.
22:38 So I'm just going to backcomb the sides now. This is where it all gets a little bit difficult
22:44 to see what you're doing. Loving the light of evenings now the clocks have changed here
23:00 in the UK. I thought I was almost going to get to do a video without needing artificial
23:05 light but not quite yet. Won't be long. Okay. How long does it usually take? If I'm not
23:18 chatting 10-15 minutes I suppose. It's a really quick one, doesn't require any pre-curling
23:26 or prep. Laura's asking if I'm a hairdresser. I'm not a hairdresser, I'm a hair stylist
23:39 and I just specialise in vintage hair styling and also make-up styling. Oh hey Lisa! Lisa
23:51 did, at the weekend I was teaching Victory Rolls and Curls at the Mayflower Theatre in
23:59 Southampton in the UK where I live. It was a beautiful venue and then we went and had
24:07 a gorgeous afternoon tea in a posh restaurant after for a little social. It was lovely!
24:14 So if you're in the Southampton area we're definitely going to do that again, both the
24:20 workshop and the social so keep an eye on my page and we'll try and get something else
24:25 lined up. Once everyone had their hair done it would have been a shame to just go home.
24:36 Okay so I have a huge amount of backcombing and height now, all my sections are done.
24:45 Don't worry too much about it looking nuts at this stage, it's going to calm down I promise.
24:53 So once you've got all your backcombing in, I flip it back across. Oh Laura you're 71
25:03 and you did these for many years, good work, thank you Laura. Amazing, I would have loved
25:10 to be around in the 60s. I love seeing the pictures of the vintage hair salons where
25:15 they all had a dinner tray and they'd literally sit there and have a glass of wine in their
25:19 dinner. I think they should bring that back don't you? Hi Angie from Florida! Hi Tyler!
25:34 Can you do this with extra fine hair? Yes absolutely, same technique, you don't want
25:41 to see through your beehive so just go as big as your hair will allow you before you
25:45 get to the point of being able to see through it and you can also use padding if you've
25:49 got really fine hair. Basically the same technique, as you backcomb put some padding right on
25:55 the crown of your head and then you're going to cover that with your hair, whatever hair
25:59 you have got or some synthetic hair even which you don't have to worry about backcombing
26:04 at all then because it's not your actual hair. Right so when you've got your backcombing
26:11 in, I just went back through and backcombed a section here, you look for any gaps, see
26:17 if you want to fill anything in before you start taming it, it's a lot easier to put
26:21 the backcombing in at this stage than go back later and try and put it in. I look absolutely
26:28 crazy, I do apologise. So now I'm going to go over this section, you can use a bristle
26:37 brush again to do that, I prefer to use a bigger brush at this point so this is a Denman,
26:45 again it's like a boar bristle brush, something that's like a smoothing brush that's not going
26:49 to get all the way in but is going to lightly smooth over that section. So you don't want
27:05 to take the height out, you just want to smooth over because you don't want to see that backcombing.
27:14 And at this point have a think about the symmetry, it doesn't have to be perfect but it does
27:22 help to have balance to the style. Okay so that's looking pretty good. I'm just going
27:35 to put a stronger hold hairspray on at this point, now I've got the height and the smoothness
27:41 that I'm happy with. So this is a fairly cheap and cheerful one, you can pick it up in most
27:48 places I think in the US and the UK, it's Schwarzkopf Got To Be Glued. And you can just
27:55 lightly go over with your hands if you want to smooth any baby hairs down. Yeah, very
28:03 quickly calms down this style but I do enjoy that crazy stage. And you can scare people
28:12 with it too which is fun. So then I'm going to grab one side
28:24 and just start smoothing it back. And then I'm feeling for the twist that I made earlier
28:38 and I'm wanting to bring it to that. When I've got that side across I'll just show you
28:44 what I'm going to do. So I'm just holding it there and I'm going to pin it in place.
28:59 In fact one pin is enough, if you have more hair you maybe need a couple at this point.
29:06 And the other side I'm going to do the same. And to bring it together I'm not going to
29:24 wrap it across, I'm going to attempt to twist the ends now in on itself to create almost
29:32 like a tiny chignon so that the ends are all tucked in. Yeah, sometimes hairspray can leave
29:42 a white residue in dark hair. If you use a lot or it's been in there for a couple of
29:49 days it can, but you can always just keep brushing and it will eventually come out.
29:56 Or if it's only at your roots, sometimes I find just using a tiny bit of water along
30:00 my hairline can get rid of that powdery hairspray. OK. I mean it's taking longer but you can
30:14 see that this is a fairly quick hairstyle. Yeah again that bit's gone in with just one
30:25 pin, so other than the couple I used to get the bottom section up there's probably only
30:31 about four or five hair pins in this style. Now once it's all pinned up you can then go
30:37 back through and see what you like and what you don't like. The ends of a tail comb is
30:43 really useful for this part because you can go back through and just lightly manipulate
30:48 and pull through bits that you want to be bigger. But I'm pretty happy with that so
31:00 I'm going to go back and set it again. Does your hair have to all be one length? Carol's
31:05 asking. No, not at all. Layers work brilliantly with beehives. It can look really nice to
31:12 have little bits falling down, especially around your face. That's a really, you know,
31:15 Bridget Fardow type look. If you've got shorter layers in the back then you might struggle
31:24 to get enough height which is still fine because if you've got super short hair and you're
31:29 backcombing and doing a beehive you can just move over and with the power of hairspray
31:34 and backcombing it will hold that shape. Yeah, it's just perhaps slightly more reassuring
31:42 to have it pinned in place but not essential at all. OK, so I'm just patting that down.
31:55 Then we can come back to the front section. I'm just going to do that side bit. I often
32:05 use a lot of hairspray in my curl sets and other hairdos and with a beehive I find I
32:11 don't need as much hairspray because the backcombing's got all the volume in there. You don't have
32:20 to use the light hold hairspray as you're going through the sections either. So I'm
32:27 just going to take out the front section. So I've got quite a nice little curl going
32:30 on here. So a few options. You could just leave it quite flat and sweep it to the side.
32:40 You could roll this up into a pin curl and pin it against your head. You may not be able
32:49 to see all of these on my super dark hair but you could just do a pin curl. If you've
32:54 got lighter hair or really long hair and maybe somebody to help or an extra pair of hands,
33:01 I love to have a beehive with some lovely swells going around, especially with the fringe
33:07 section. Clipping it in place and letting it dry with hairspray. I don't have that luxury,
33:13 it's fairly short and very dark and I'm just going to do the front section out. But I'm
33:19 going to put some volume into the fringe. So I'm just going to split that into smaller
33:24 sections. Oh, Kelly's saving this video for Goodwood Revival Prep. Amazing. I'll be there
33:31 in the Betty's salon this year which I can't wait for. It's a beautiful salon but good
33:37 on you for having a go. I'm guessing you're going 60s styling. Have you got your outfit
33:43 sorted? Oh, storage. So I've just backcombed that into three sections. I'm going to put
33:52 a bit of the Lighthold spray on and then I'm going to go back through and just smooth gently
33:58 at the roots and across the back so that it's into one section. Because I want to keep the
34:07 volume at the roots, you can use one of these kind of duckbill section clips and just put
34:15 it across at the roots so that while you're sorting out the ends of the hair, it's not
34:20 going to pull it down. Oh, it's your sixth year, Kelly. Amazing. So Goodwood Revival,
34:31 for those who don't know, is perhaps the greatest vintage event in the UK. I don't want to cause
34:38 a big debate but it's certainly my favourite. It's got cars, aeroplanes, 40s, 50s and 60s
34:47 fashion, dancing, shopping, you name it. I think this might be my eighth year.
