00:18 - Hi my friends, Sam Villa here,
00:45 and we're in Portland, Oregon for our training,
00:47 and thanks for joining us with our Facebook Live.
00:49 We're gonna be here live for 30 minutes,
00:52 and we're gonna be going over some tips and tricks
00:54 and some ideas and things that we're interpreting now
00:56 for this season.
00:58 We have to talk about how it's all about celebrating
01:00 the hair's personality and texture
01:02 in a number of ways as you're about to see.
01:04 Also, it's about taking things that you see
01:07 and making it your own.
01:08 One thing for sure is the haircut is here to stay,
01:11 and we saw it on the catwalk.
01:13 Soft, short, classic cutting techniques
01:16 with contemporary methods.
01:18 Let's take a look and see what Jesse Linares,
01:20 our art team member, is doing.
01:21 Hi Jesse, how are you brother?
01:22 - Hey Sammy, how are you today?
01:23 - Very good, man.
01:24 Tell us what you're doing here, what you're working.
01:26 - Awesome, well if there's one haircut
01:28 that is really popping up on the social scene,
01:30 it's the so-called modern shag.
01:32 So we're gonna get a piece of one here today,
01:34 and we're just getting ourselves started off
01:35 by getting ourselves sectioned off into a breakdown.
01:38 We've designed our own cutting system,
01:40 and we're calling this our foundational breakdown.
01:42 Now if I'm gonna give her a little spin for you here,
01:44 you'll see that she's sectioned off
01:47 at what we call our vertical transition,
01:49 where the side of the head starts to become the top.
01:52 Traveling our way around, that vertical transition
01:55 continues through the crown,
01:57 where the back of the head would begin to separate
01:59 from the crown and all the way back around
02:01 to the side once again.
02:03 Then we got in there, and we sectioned ourselves off
02:05 at what we call our horizontal transitions,
02:08 where these are major changes in direction
02:09 as that you can see taking place
02:11 as we move around the head in a lateral way.
02:13 So there's the side of the head.
02:15 At some point, it has to start becoming the back.
02:18 So we're gonna locate that place where it happens,
02:20 and we're gonna draw a vertical line right there
02:22 and call that our horizontal transition.
02:24 What I love about this breakdown is that,
02:26 you know, any breakdown is truly just a map
02:27 of the head form to let you get to a specific end result,
02:31 just like a map if you were driving your car.
02:33 What I love about our breakdown
02:34 is that it opens the head up in three really easy
02:37 to manage sections that allow most haircuts to take place,
02:40 and then if I had another breakdown that I wanted to use,
02:42 or if I needed to fine tune this
02:44 to get the end result that I wanted,
02:46 it definitely allows me to do that
02:47 and gives me a lot of creative freedom.
02:49 So I'm gonna keep working this way.
02:50 I've got her sectioned off.
02:51 I'm gonna start cutting some hair,
02:52 and I'll catch you guys on the other side.
02:54 - Jesse, I just wanna ask you a question.
02:55 Yeah, you brought this,
02:56 looks like you did it with a curl in there.
02:58 Any reason for that,
02:59 or is that something that they need to do
03:01 in order to get the end result on this?
03:02 - Well, I'm glad that you brought that up, Sam,
03:03 because I think everyone would agree
03:05 that today's trends are very low-maintenance looking.
03:08 You know, so what we're looking at
03:10 is if I've got a lady that wants to just set her hair
03:12 with a large rod,
03:13 and then wear it very easy and very natural,
03:16 then it's gonna work out better for me
03:17 if I can cut her that way.
03:19 You know, I wanna cut her in her so-called natural state.
03:21 That way, she can live in it so easy, so good.
03:24 Awesome, I really love this.
03:25 - All right, let's take a look,
03:26 and let's go over to team member, Anna Peters,
03:29 who happens to be our education ambassador.
03:31 And when you think about up-styles,
03:33 I mean, up-styles have become so simple now,
03:36 and it's really, simple things are not easy to do.
03:39 Let me just say that.
03:40 So let's talk about Anna.
03:41 Anna, what are you doing here?
03:43 What's going on?
03:44 You're starting with something that's really interesting
03:46 in terms of setting it up.
03:47 - Absolutely.
03:48 So the look that I'm gonna be creating here is a high bun,
03:52 and I'm gonna be creating a messy faux fringe on this bun.
03:56 So what we found with a lot of our long-haired clients
04:00 is that they're terrified of cutting a fringe,
04:03 because, but they love it.
04:04 It's huge.
04:05 Everybody's got a fringe.
04:06 It's super sexy.
04:08 So here's a way you could wear that fringe
04:10 and not have the commitment of cutting your hair.
04:13 But what I'm going to be doing is moving the hair up.
04:16 And so what we found is so important
04:19 is that while we do that, we direct all of the roots,
04:23 every single root on this head
04:24 to where we're gonna be placing that bun or ponytail.
04:28 And what that does for us is when those roots are directed
04:31 to that exact point, it is so easy
04:35 to get a nice, smooth, bump-free ponytail or bun.
04:39 So I'm just really heating those roots up
04:43 and just directing it all to where I want that hair to move.
04:48 - All right, Anna, I see something here with texture.
04:51 To me, it looks like some of this hair is smooth,
04:54 and then you look at it,
04:55 and it looks like it's been hit with our texture iron.
04:57 So it looks like you've gone in
04:59 and you've highlighted some of these sections
05:00 and textured with a high,
05:01 tell me what you've done there to set this up.
05:03 - Yeah, so when we go in and texture,
05:06 we're doing it for a couple of reasons.
05:08 One, for grip, we're gonna get a lot more grip
05:11 out of any kind of up style or braid that we're doing.
05:14 And another reason we could use it is to get volume.
05:18 So I'll use it at the base of my bun,
05:22 or I'll use it throughout to just expand her hair.
05:25 So we're not always gonna go through
05:27 and texturize the whole head.
05:29 We're gonna go in,
05:30 and we're just gonna highlight some texture into that,
05:33 just by going in and just gently tapping it,
05:37 creating a little bit of grip and volume at the root area.
05:41 - That's awesome,
05:42 because I think one of the things that we've been doing,
05:44 we were always texturizing the entire head in the past.
05:47 Remember, the texture iron gives the hair
05:49 two thirds the volume,
05:50 but more so in your up styles,
05:51 it makes the hair really pliable and easy to put up.
05:54 But what I love is that we're going in,
05:56 we're actually highlighting the hair
05:57 just like a color smite,
05:59 and just texturing just to hide the part that we weave.
06:02 So not all the hair has been textured,
06:03 so it's giving you a much more natural type of appearance.
06:06 We'll come back to Anna with the bun.
06:08 Follow me on over here.
06:09 Let's come over here to Marissa,
06:11 to talk about with Marissa,
06:13 what are you gonna be doing Marissa?
06:14 - So the look that I've created
06:15 is with our Sambia two in one iron.
06:20 It's with the Marcelle and the wand.
06:24 So,
06:28 aha, sticky fingers,
06:29 that's what hairspray does sometimes, right?
06:32 So what I've done is I've taken vertical sections,
06:36 this is our finished look here,
06:38 very lived in, very soft,
06:41 and I've taken the Marcelle
06:44 and have done a wrap curl,
06:49 open and close,
06:52 and then I have done,
06:54 I put my Marcelle the other way,
06:57 wrap it,
06:58 so then I do that all the way down
07:00 to get this type of a wave.
07:03 - So Marissa, why are you doing this?
07:05 Does it give it a lazy appearance?
07:06 What does it do?
07:07 - So, by doing the opposite directions
07:11 just on that one section,
07:12 it's gonna give it a really fun wave texture
07:15 instead of that uniform S shape.
07:18 And then I alternate sections
07:21 and I use my wand doing a wrap curl.
07:26 - Awesome, so we'll come back,
07:27 we'll catch you up in terms of how are you using the wand,
07:29 but here's what I love about this,
07:30 in terms of how she's alternating the iron,
07:33 working with the spoon or the lip,
07:34 and then working with a wand,
07:36 but she's working with two different types of curls
07:38 in terms of how she's wrapping it.
07:40 One is a lazy curl and then one's a flat wrap,
07:42 and we'll come back and we'll catch her up
07:44 on the flat wrap.
07:44 Let's come back to Jessie.
07:46 Once again, working with the classic cutting technique,
07:49 but it's all about contemporary methods at the same time.
07:53 Jessie, where are you opening up?
07:54 - Awesome, so I've completed one side of the head,
07:56 I just wanted to knock that out
07:57 so I could talk to you guys for a sec
07:58 when you come back around.
08:00 What really excited and really proud
08:02 to get to introduce one of our new friends to you.
08:04 This is our artist series, slide cutting shear.
08:07 So now a lot of people use slide cutting
08:09 in their daily work.
08:09 It's an old technique that a lot of people love to use,
08:12 but we define it in different ways.
08:14 So I think we can safely say that slide cutting
08:17 is generally done working through the interior
08:19 of a section of hair,
08:20 rather than just chopping on the ends.
08:23 So it's used to create a lot of texture
08:25 and interior movement and a shape.
08:26 So we've designed a shear that's perfectly designed
08:29 to do this for you.
08:30 You'll notice if I'm gonna bring her in nice and tight here,
08:32 that you can see that the blades actually curve away from you
08:35 as we get to the end of the shear.
08:37 And what that's designed to do is a slide cutting shear,
08:40 which is to allow that hair to begin to push out,
08:43 to escape as we work through the shape.
08:45 And it's gonna allow us to get a lot of really soft edges,
08:48 more so than a shear that's regularly designed.
08:51 I've got one of those here with me.
08:52 This is our Signature Series
08:54 seven inch dry cutting swivel shear.
08:56 And I just want you to see how straight that blade is
08:58 as we move down.
08:59 And then once again,
09:00 take another look at our new Artist Series
09:02 slide cutting shear,
09:03 designed to really open up the hair
09:05 and allow those ends to escape.
09:07 So I'm gonna take a section here for you.
09:08 I went ahead and set a little bit of a face framing guide,
09:11 and I'm gonna elevate out about 90 degrees to the room here.
09:14 And as I slide cut, I want you guys to notice,
09:18 I'm gonna give it to you in super slow motion.
09:19 I've got a little grip that I'm gonna use
09:21 that our double tang really allows us to exploit.
09:24 Now I can point the shear towards me.
09:26 Now, as I move through it,
09:27 one thing we're not doing is just taking the shear
09:29 and like ripping through the hair.
09:31 Scissors are designed to close to be most effective,
09:33 and we're gonna allow that to happen.
09:35 So as I open the shear nice and wide
09:37 and set myself in the hair,
09:38 I'm gonna show you in slow-mo one time
09:39 so you can see it with good tension,
09:42 closing the shear as I move through,
09:44 and then those ends really allow it to escape.
09:46 - Show us that one more time, Jesse.
09:48 - You got it, Andrew.
09:48 Here we go.
09:49 So elevating out about 90 degrees to the room,
09:52 open the shear wide, and as I come in,
09:54 I'm going to allow it to close
09:56 as I work my way through the section.
09:58 Now that felt a little bit harsh
10:00 because I was moving a little slow.
10:01 So can I give you one at salon speed
10:03 just to show you the good stuff?
10:04 - Oh, yeah, of course. - All right, buddy.
10:05 Here we go. - I see it.
10:06 - All right, so now I'm a little slow in the salon,
10:08 so don't judge my salon speed.
10:10 It's a little slow.
10:11 But 90 degrees out to the room,
10:13 I'm gonna take the shear, open it up,
10:15 bring it back towards me,
10:16 and now I'm gonna begin to work through that hair.
10:18 And even though you may not be able
10:20 to tell that it's happening,
10:21 the shear is actually closing as it moves.
10:24 Now, how do you do that, Jesse?
10:25 You've gotta figure that out for yourself
10:27 with your own hand, your own rhythm,
10:29 your own arms, and your own body.
10:30 You take the time to practice with a new tool.
10:33 Get to know it.
10:34 It's an extension of your hand,
10:35 and soon you'll be melting through the hair just like that.
10:38 - Jesse, one question, and by the way,
10:40 if you have questions out there, please ask.
10:42 But I'm sure some of you might be thinking,
10:44 I notice you're doing this on dry.
10:45 Dry or wet, or is there a preference,
10:47 or can we do it on both?
10:48 - You could absolutely do it on both, Sam.
10:49 But the reason I did it on dry hair
10:51 was to illustrate a point that I'm working on in the salon
10:53 is that all these trends that we're seeing these days
10:55 are designed to have the appearance of low maintenance.
10:58 So what we wanna do is,
10:59 if I've got a lady here that just likes
11:01 to wear her hair very natural, very dry,
11:04 but then just to use a big iron on it every day
11:06 and just get that nice, soft, undulating wave,
11:10 then I really wanna cut her in that natural state.
11:13 Because if that's how she wears her hair,
11:15 if she wants it to be low maintenance,
11:16 it's my responsibility as a behind-the-chair hairdresser
11:20 to meet that need and give her what she needs
11:22 to look her best every single day.
11:24 - Awesome, Jesse, thanks for that.
11:27 We'll come back and we'll catch up on that top over here.
11:29 Let's come back over here to Anna.
11:31 Remember, we're talking about,
11:32 you're seeing a lot of top buns or top knots,
11:35 let me say that, a lot of top knots.
11:37 But this is pretty much a top bun.
11:39 Let's see how you're doing this.
11:40 - Absolutely.
11:40 So I've split this into two sections.
11:44 And the reason for that is this top section
11:47 is going to become my fringe.
11:49 If I had all of this hair to put in front of her face
11:53 as her fringe, it would be way too much.
11:55 So I split her up into two.
11:57 - What I love is your directional blow dry.
11:59 - Yeah, right?
12:00 - And look how beautiful that just sweeps up
12:03 and it's smooth and it doesn't seem to me
12:05 like you're working really hard to get it up.
12:08 - Not at all.
12:09 So just using my Artist Series Finishing Brush,
12:11 which I love for when I'm trying to get
12:13 that nice, smooth, polished finish.
12:16 It's really nice, 100% boar bristles.
12:20 And just working through, getting that nice and smooth.
12:23 And as soon as I'm ready to secure that,
12:26 I'm gonna take my elastic.
12:28 I'm gonna wrap this around once,
12:34 twice,
12:37 and this third time,
12:41 I'm gonna just pull this in.
12:42 I'm gonna direct those ends over her face,
12:45 pulling this top up till I see about how much hair
12:49 I want hanging in her face.
12:51 Now that might look like a lot,
12:52 but I'm gonna style it to more of like a side sweat
12:55 kind of curtain fringe.
12:56 - Yeah, I know.
12:57 I'm sure a lot of people are out there saying,
12:58 well, she can't see, she can't see.
13:00 Remember, in order for her to move hair, you need length.
13:03 So you can see that's giving her some length
13:05 in order for her to work with.
13:06 - And we're gonna smooth this out
13:08 and give it a nice bevel as well with our sleeker.
13:11 - Okay, great.
13:12 So we'll come back to you and we'll catch up on the back,
13:14 what's happening back there
13:15 as you're maneuvering your fringe around.
13:17 So you can see guys, really what's happening
13:19 is we're having a lot of rediscovery
13:21 in terms of how we're cutting hair,
13:22 how we're approaching our haircuts,
13:24 how we're going through and working with our irons,
13:26 and how we're working with rediscovering
13:28 and reinterpreting how we're doing our up styles.
13:31 And by the way, we are available
13:34 for in-salon hands-on classes.
13:35 So if you're very much interested
13:37 in getting Andrew, Jessie, or Anna Peters out in your salon,
13:40 please make sure you contact us through our website,
13:43 samvia.com, go to our education, our tab there,
13:47 and you'll find out in terms of
13:49 how you can get us into your salon.
13:51 So make sure you reach out.
13:52 I really believe that in today's world,
13:54 it's about the quality of the cut
13:56 and the skill of the finishing
13:58 that gives you the end result.
13:59 All right, so now let's go back to Marissa.
14:01 She's been alternating her sections
14:03 with the two-in-one Marcel,
14:06 and she's now working with a wand.
14:07 Marissa.
14:08 - I'm now working with my wand.
14:09 I'm working on the top section.
14:10 I didn't say before.
14:12 I split it in two, so from the top of the ear
14:14 to the back. - Can you show us
14:15 on the camera that, please? - Absolutely.
14:17 You turn her around.
14:19 Participate with me.
14:21 There we go.
14:22 So this bottom is the part that we've curled first
14:27 because we are taking those long vertical sections,
14:29 and we don't want them to be too long and too thick,
14:31 and you're trying to get a wave up here,
14:32 and it's not going all the way through to the bottom.
14:34 So that's why I separated it
14:36 in those two sections, top and bottom.
14:37 So I finished my bottom alternating.
14:39 This was the Marcel.
14:40 There's the wand, and then the Marcel again.
14:43 So now I'm starting in the front,
14:45 and I've wanted to keep my curls
14:47 going back away from the face.
14:49 So now I'm gonna show you what I'm doing
14:51 with the wand here.
14:52 I have the wand going down.
14:53 I've already prepped the hair
14:55 with some Iron Shape 11 from Redken.
14:57 I'm gonna go in and just flat wrap it.
15:00 Now, flat wrapping, I wanna make sure
15:02 that I'm not overlapping the hair too much.
15:05 I'm not doing a spiral at the end.
15:07 I'm keeping it flat, and I'm really gonna be using
15:09 the length of the wand, too.
15:10 This comes in handy for our mermaids.
15:12 So I'm gonna leave that in for a second,
15:15 and then I'm gonna pull it down.
15:18 So that way I get that really soft,
15:20 you can kinda see where that wave is coming in.
15:23 So when I start pulling them out,
15:25 you can see how the different textures
15:28 from the Marcel to the wand really play a role here.
15:31 So that way they're not overlapping
15:33 and becoming one giant curl.
15:35 - Yeah, you know what, Marissa?
15:36 I love this because one of the most difficult things
15:39 to create is a messy do, or an undone do.
15:43 One of the most difficult things to create
15:44 is this organic texture that we're seeing.
15:47 Yet, let's understand something.
15:48 We're starting to embrace organic texture,
15:51 but you have a lot of clients out there
15:52 that have this straight hair that are looking
15:54 for these organic waves, this organic kinda half curl.
15:58 So really, it's all about working with our curling irons
16:01 in different ways to establish that.
16:03 So once again, a rediscovery, a reinterpretation
16:07 of how we're working with our irons.
16:08 All right, Jesse's moving into the top of his haircut now.
16:11 So let's take a look at the top of the haircut.
16:14 By the way, I love the color on these mannequins.
16:17 This is something I want, I'm gonna talk to Anna
16:19 when we get to Anna, because Anna colored
16:20 these mannequins for us, and we'll talk about that.
16:23 But let's go to the top of the haircut, Jesse.
16:24 - All right, awesome, thanks.
16:25 So we had the idea, you know, we wanted the top
16:27 of this shag to look really good and moppy.
16:29 So we've worked in vertical subsections,
16:31 which are designed to collapse volume
16:33 and slenderize the shape in the underneath,
16:35 underneath the vertical transition.
16:37 But on top, we're switching over to horizontal.
16:40 So we're gonna be still working from the interior
16:42 of the section and still slide cutting.
16:44 And I'm just gonna share with you guys a nice,
16:46 easy way to discipline your hand on this
16:48 without hurting yourself, because sometimes
16:51 holding my hand up here and then coming from underneath
16:53 with the shear, I'm afraid of losing a finger here.
16:56 So I've elevated up about 90 degrees to the head form here.
17:00 That way, this shape will be really nice
17:01 and full as it follows the head.
17:03 There's where we cut previously,
17:05 taking a small section from the underneath as a guide.
17:08 Now here's what I'm gonna do.
17:09 I'm gonna position my slide cutting shear
17:11 in a safe place from my hand.
17:13 So check out my guide.
17:14 I'm gonna slide a little bit past it
17:17 to give myself some room to work.
17:19 And now I'm gonna place this shear in a nice, safe place.
17:22 How much texture I take out will be determined
17:25 by how little or how wide I open the shear.
17:28 So can you see, guys?
17:29 I'm parked right here, but if I open up a little,
17:32 I'm gonna get a little nibble.
17:33 If I insert and open up wide,
17:35 I'm gonna take a little bit more out.
17:37 And so as I continue to work my way across this section,
17:40 I'm just varying how much I open the shear
17:43 to get deep interior texture.
17:46 That is almost impossible to do
17:48 if you're going to notch or point cut
17:49 on the outside of the section.
17:51 - Jesse, I love that.
17:52 Yeah, I'm sure everybody out there is going,
17:54 how did he not cut his fingers
17:56 with that point of the scissor?
17:57 - Well, I'll confess, Sam.
17:58 I've done a lot of bleeding over the years
18:00 learning this stuff.
18:01 But a hot tip for you guys.
18:02 - Part of the pain of learning, right?
18:03 - One thing I've learned, if I could share it with you,
18:04 if you're gonna work in such a way
18:06 and that part's in danger, guys,
18:07 put the band-aid on first.
18:09 Because all you're gonna do is give yourself
18:11 a little bulletproof vest there.
18:12 So as you work your way through, as you try new stuff,
18:14 protect yourself before you wreck your haircut.
18:17 - All right, brother, I love that, and thanks for that.
18:20 I'm gonna come back to you,
18:21 and we'll come back on that last pass,
18:23 and we'll catch up on where you're ending that haircut.
18:25 Come over here and take a look at what Anna's done.
18:27 If you thought it was too long in the front,
18:29 take a look at what she's done.
18:31 It's a great pair of hands, Anna Peters.
18:32 Anna, tell us where you're at.
18:34 - Awesome, so now I'm just going in
18:35 and just refining that fringe.
18:38 And so I'm using my sleeker iron.
18:40 We already put texture in,
18:41 so we have that volume and grip in there.
18:44 Now I'm just using my sleeker iron
18:46 to give me that bevel where I wanna see it,
18:48 and a little bit of that bend.
18:50 Just kind of being really delicate with this.
18:53 This is gonna flop around,
18:54 so I'm using my Sandvia dry clip to secure that
18:59 so that this bun isn't flopping around.
19:02 And it's loose right now
19:03 because we pulled through that fringe.
19:04 We're gonna tighten it up.
19:06 But first, I'm just getting this fringe,
19:08 just how I wanna see it.
19:09 Little bit of my wax blast, Redken wax blast.
19:13 I love this guy.
19:15 - Talk to me about,
19:15 are you using a thermal protector on that?
19:18 - Oh yeah, everything was already set up
19:20 and protected with Redken's iron sheet.
19:22 - Interesting, so you're not spraying that
19:24 on section by section.
19:25 You sprayed that all over first.
19:27 - Large areas at a time.
19:28 - Love that.
19:29 - Section by section,
19:30 then going through that large area and using the hot iron.
19:33 - So when we work with irons,
19:34 we definitely need a thermal heat protector.
19:35 But now you're coming in with, show us again,
19:37 you're coming in with wax blast tin.
19:39 Why?
19:39 - I love wax blast tin because of the grip
19:43 and the texture and volume that I can get out of it.
19:45 It's very movable,
19:47 so I can kind of just get it to bend
19:49 and do what I want it to do
19:51 without the stiffness of a hairspray.
19:53 - Yep, what I love, Anna,
19:55 is how you worked with a flat iron.
19:56 You know, I think of the sleeper as a flat iron.
19:59 But there's a particular way we made that
20:00 with beveled edges and how it's round.
20:02 And notice how you're just rotating your wrist
20:05 to get that hair to kind of move
20:06 and float where you want it to.
20:08 - Yeah, we don't always need to use the sleeper
20:10 to compress the hair and get a nice smooth finish all over.
20:13 A lot of the time, I'll just use it for detailing like this,
20:16 just to get a little bend.
20:17 - So it's interesting how almost any kind of tool
20:20 with heat can manipulate that hair.
20:22 As long as we know that heat's our best friend
20:24 and we are in control, that's most important.
20:27 So I'm gonna come back, we'll take a look
20:29 and see where you're at.
20:30 Come on over here, let's follow back over to Marissa.
20:32 Marissa is, hold on, Marissa.
20:34 Love the back, look at the back of this, guys.
20:37 How it's just very organic, how just wave, Marissa.
20:40 It looks like it's probably about,
20:42 down to half a day old or at least a few hours old,
20:45 which is what it's about, guys,
20:47 creating natural texture.
20:48 Go ahead and recap this, talk to us about it.
20:50 - Very lived in and that's one of the things
20:52 that I do love about this technique
20:54 using the wand and the Marcel,
20:56 is the fact that you can decide
20:59 where you want this first bend to be.
21:01 So depending on face shape
21:03 or what your client's comfortable with,
21:04 if they are working with a fringe,
21:06 then you can be able to see where you want that bend.
21:09 Now for her, she doesn't have her fringe yet,
21:12 but she's working on it, you know, those long hair clients.
21:14 So for now, we're gonna put that bend
21:16 right there by her eye, looks really soft and pretty.
21:19 And you can see some of the pieces
21:20 are gonna be straighter and curlier
21:22 and that's what gives it that fun texture in it.
21:25 - Okay, what product did you finish with?
21:27 Talk to us about the product.
21:28 - I used some Diamond Oil Pillow Proof
21:32 and I finished with Triple Take Hairspray.
21:35 - Okay, all right, hairspray.
21:37 Now a lot of times, clients don't like hairspray.
21:39 So let's take a look.
21:40 This is the hairspray that Marissa used,
21:42 which is Triple Take 32.
21:43 32 times stronger than water.
21:46 It's really an extreme high hold hairspray.
21:49 Now when I picked up this spray,
21:51 a lot of times clients would say,
21:53 I don't like hairsprays.
21:54 One of the hot tips to do guys is spray your hands
21:58 and now go in and spray.
22:00 Now the question people ask me is how close do you spray it?
22:02 Here's a hot tip for you.
22:03 Take the can, this is where you need to be.
22:06 Boom, that's how far away you are
22:08 when you spray this particular hairspray.
22:10 So let the can be your distance marker
22:13 in terms of where you are.
22:14 Sometimes out of habit, I would just pick it up
22:16 and I'd be here and I'd get it too wet.
22:19 So I'm giving you a hot tip here.
22:21 You're a can away with anything that you pick up.
22:23 That size of the can will determine
22:25 how far you are away from the head
22:27 so you're not getting so much product.
22:30 - What if I have a mini can?
22:31 - If you have a mini can, then guess what?
22:33 That mini can, like Shine Flash 2,
22:36 you got a mini can, you might want to back up.
22:39 Come on guys, use common sense.
22:41 I just used your common sense
22:43 in terms of how that product dissipates.
22:45 Beautiful, Marissa, love what you've done there
22:48 and I love how you're working with the iron,
22:49 both Marcel and the wand.
22:53 Okay, now I have a question out there
22:55 in terms of where can I get this mannequin?
22:57 You like the mannequin.
22:58 These mannequins that we work with,
22:59 there's two types of mannequins
23:01 that we work with at San Vida.
23:02 One of them is pivot point.
23:04 We support pivot point because the mannequins
23:06 are the proper mannequins.
23:08 Make sure you look for the tag
23:10 on the pivot point mannequins
23:12 and ensure that the people that are making these mannequins
23:14 are treated properly in their work environment.
23:17 That's why we purchase pivot point mannequins
23:19 aside from the hair.
23:20 So go to pivot point and check it out.
23:22 These long hair mannequins are expensive.
23:24 Make sure every salon has one.
23:26 They're great ways to practice.
23:28 We also love Chris Sorby mannequins
23:32 and we love those mannequins
23:33 and we use those mannequins more for our shows
23:36 because they have makeup, they're beautiful
23:38 and the hair texture is beautiful
23:40 and Chris Sorby, being the great colorist that she is,
23:43 they're beautiful mannequins to color.
23:44 So those are the two types of mannequins
23:46 that we work with, pivot point and Chris Sorby
23:49 and mannequins are a great resource for education.
23:52 We use them constantly and take a look.
23:54 Lot of manufacturers and teams are working with mannequins.
23:57 Why?
23:58 'Cause they don't talk back to us.
23:59 (audience laughing)
24:01 All right, take a look over here at what Anna's doing.
24:03 Anna, now you're working on your finish.
24:05 - Awesome, so I took this back section, you guys.
24:09 I just brushed it up and I secured it
24:11 with a bungee at the base.
24:13 Now this brought my two sections together,
24:15 made it really secure.
24:17 Now I have this ponytail hanging back here
24:19 and this is gonna be my wraparound section.
24:21 So I'm just gonna kinda blouse this a little bit,
24:24 start to wrap this around
24:27 and really I'm using my mirror in front of me
24:30 just to kinda see what I see, how the front looks
24:35 and then we're just gonna pin, start pinning that in place.
24:40 - Anything that you can tell us about hairpins,
24:41 any little tips you can give us on hairpins or grips
24:43 or anything like that? - Oh yeah.
24:44 So a lot of the time we just stick 'em in there
24:47 but it's gonna give you a lot more hold
24:49 if you go in with the bumpy side on the bottom.
24:52 So we always do that and then a lot of the time
24:55 I like to kinda weave that in there
24:57 just so that I can grab, especially in a look like this,
25:00 grab some extra hair, create some more texture
25:03 than just a nice, smooth insert of the bobby pin.
25:07 (scissors snipping)
25:09 See to me guys, this look that you're seeing Anna do,
25:14 it was simple for her to do but it's all in the prep.
25:19 Number one, she used a texture iron.
25:21 Number two, she did a great directional blow dry.
25:25 If we don't take the time to build the base
25:28 and the foundation, the direction we wanna go,
25:30 then you're just simply fighting with the hair
25:32 and you're over brushing, you're over brushing.
25:34 Okay, so that's critical.
25:36 So let's go through.
25:38 Anna, any last thing that you wanna say?
25:40 - Yeah, this mannequin was colored beautifully
25:42 by Veronica Ridge, Redken artist.
25:45 She used City Beats, Redken City Beats,
25:48 yellow cab and highline green and she did an amazing job.
25:52 - Yeah, she sure did.
25:53 And guys, in honor of St. Patty's Day yesterday,
25:55 we had to go with a little green
25:57 and we wanna give a shout out to Veronica Ridge
25:59 for what she did and by the way,
26:01 she used just a hint of yellow cab
26:03 just so you're aware of that.
26:05 All right, thanks Veronica.
26:06 - Thank you. - All right.
26:07 Go ahead and finish that up.
26:08 Jesse, let's take a look.
26:09 I love the silhouette and the shape.
26:11 That's beautiful in terms of what you did there.
26:12 - Just putting the final touch on there.
26:14 You know, and we really wanted
26:15 to have a natural looking finish.
26:16 One of my favorite finishes is to take a low control paste.
26:20 One of my favorites is Redken's Moveability 0 to 5.
26:23 This is one of their flex pastes.
26:24 Has super fine polymers that don't really bind hair up
26:27 like paste normally does.
26:29 Very flowing paste, very touchable.
26:31 And then I'll go ahead and just cut the viscosity
26:33 of that a little bit with a little bit
26:34 of Redken's Diamond Oil Glow Dry
26:36 which is awesome, all natural oils.
26:38 And then when I put those two together,
26:40 it gives me like a little less paste, a little less oil
26:43 but working well together.
26:45 And then I can get really handsy with the hair.
26:47 And just bearing in mind too guys,
26:48 this is super important in the salon
26:50 that everything you do to your guest's hair
26:52 is a lesson for them.
26:53 So make sure that you're using products
26:56 in such a way that they can see what you're doing.
26:58 Use that tool in such a way that they can ask questions.
27:00 Put the thing in their hand
27:01 and make them take a crack at it
27:03 because the better they can do their hair on their own,
27:05 the better they're gonna look for you
27:06 and the more they're gonna trust you
27:08 and build that relationship even stronger.
27:11 All right girls, we can kind of bring everything together
27:13 and you stand behind your mannequin.
27:14 So you can see what we brought to you today guys.
27:18 We really brought to you the story of a haircut
27:20 in terms of where we're at with haircut
27:22 and really working with our new tool, the slide cutting tool.
27:25 Then you saw Anna over here working with the texture iron
27:29 and then she went in and you can see how simple
27:31 do's or up do's are now,
27:33 but it's all about in the preparation and in the foundation.
27:36 And then you can see how Marissa worked with a curling iron.
27:40 Curling irons are great.
27:41 I see Marissa, you put a little braid,
27:42 a little twist in there.
27:43 Braids continue to dominate catwalks and the red carpet,
27:47 but they're soft braids, they're cornrows.
27:49 They add dimension and interest to any look.
27:53 Sometimes Anna and I have been talking
27:54 about how braids are invisible.
27:56 So we're using braids underneath for volume
27:59 or to help keep an up do secure, use braids for that.
28:03 So there's still a braid parade going on.
28:05 If you don't know how to braid,
28:06 please learn the basics of braiding.
28:09 You will rediscover and reinterpret in your own way.
28:12 So we talked about how the haircut is here to stay.
28:14 I want to talk about social media.
28:16 You know, social media is a great resource
28:18 for learning my friends.
28:19 Continue to look for us on social media.
28:21 Follow us on our Instagram page, Sam Via Hair.
28:24 Follow us on our Facebook page, Sam Via Pro.

28:31 I was informed yesterday when I was doing a podcast
28:33 with Hairbrain, they said,
28:35 "Sam, you realize you have over 55 million views on YouTube."
28:40 Guys, there's a reason why we have 55 million views
28:45 on YouTube.
28:45 It's because we're putting out education out there.
28:48 So please check out our YouTube channel, Sam Via/YouTube.
28:52 Don't forget on March the 27th,
28:55 check out our online academy.

29:45 creating movement with your irons.
29:47 If the hair is perfect,
29:48 it doesn't get the same attention in today's eyes.
29:53 Once again, Sam Via and the team coming at you
