00:00 Hello everyone, I want you to imagine for a moment if you will that there is a special
00:05 event coming up such as a birthday or anniversary.
00:07 But being that you have a very busy lifestyle, you have completely forgotten about it.
00:11 So now you're going into a frenzy trying to figure out what to give that special someone.
00:16 And then it hits you as you walk through the kitchen.
00:18 Why not bake them a cake?
00:20 Giving that special someone something homemade is a great way to show them that you care.
00:24 Anyone can go buy something at a store, but it is much more meaningful to receive something
00:29 made especially for you.
00:30 As you can tell, baking is definitely a hobby of mine, and I truly enjoy it.
00:35 It is really rewarding making something with your own two hands, especially from scratch.
00:39 And today I will explain how you can make a cake from scratch too.
00:43 Simply by implementing three easy steps.
00:45 Baking a cake from scratch requires three main steps.
00:48 These steps are, first you must read and understand your directions properly.
00:53 Second, you must follow those directions properly by measuring properly.
00:57 And third, you must prepare your baking pan and bake your cake at the proper temperature.
01:01 I will break down all these steps one by one and towards the end I will show you some baking
01:07 images demonstrating a successfully baked cake and what the final outcome should look
01:11 like.
01:12 So let's get started.
01:14 Our first step is to read and understand directions properly.
01:17 Before you even start baking, make sure you have your recipe with you.
01:21 Whatever recipe you decide to use, always have it nearby.
01:24 Now read your recipe out loud.
01:26 This helps us to understand what we are going to need and what the recipe calls for.
01:31 Once read, make sure you understand what you have read.
01:35 For example, your recipe may tell you to have your exit room temperature or to set your
01:42 oven to a certain degree Fahrenheit.
01:44 Whatever the case, make sure you know what the recipe is asking.
01:47 Our second step is to follow directions properly by measuring properly.
01:50 This is the point where we gather all our ingredients and measuring tools as well as
01:54 mixing tools.
01:55 But before you start mixing your ingredients, make sure you measure them first.
02:00 Measure your dry ingredients by using a dry measuring cup and filling it up until it overflows.
02:06 Then you scrape off the excess with a knife or with your finger.
02:10 For liquid ingredients, measure by putting your measuring cup on a level surface and
02:16 getting it eye level to measure out your liquid ingredients.
02:19 It is crucial that your measurements be accurate.
02:23 Now it is time to combine our ingredients.
02:25 This is the fun part.
02:26 Make sure you follow the order in which they are combined.
02:30 Some recipes may tell you to combine dry ingredients first and then your wet ingredients.
02:36 Whatever your recipe is telling you to do, just follow it and you'll be fine.
02:40 Our last step is to prepare our baking pan and bake our cake at the proper temperature.
02:45 Once you have combined all your ingredients properly, make sure and double check everything
02:50 is thoroughly mixed and you have not forgotten an ingredient.
02:55 Now you have to grab your baking pan.
02:58 Some recipes will tell you what baking pan to use, such as a 10 inch round pan or a 9
03:02 inch square pan.
03:03 Whatever your recipe calls for, make sure you use the proper pan size.
03:08 But before pouring your batter into your baking pan, make sure you coat it with some nonstick
03:12 cooking spray or lightly flour the pan to make sure your cake will not stick.
03:17 Now using a spatula or spoon, slowly pour your batter into your cake pan, making sure
03:22 to scrape the sides of your bowl.
03:24 Even out your cake batter by smoothing the top with a spoon or spatula to ensure even
03:28 distribution of cake batter.
03:31 Now it is time to put our cake, or soon to be cake, into the center rack of our preheated
03:38 oven.
03:39 Based on your directions, set your baking time to however long it takes for your cake
03:44 to bake.
03:45 But not all ovens are created equal, so your oven may take more or less time to bake your
03:51 cake.
03:53 Check on your cake every couple of minutes.
03:55 Once time is up, to check if your cake is done, run a clean knife or toothpick in the
04:00 center.
04:01 If it comes out clean, you're good to go.
04:03 But if there's still raw cake batter, make sure you bake for a few additional minutes.
04:10 When your cake is completely baked, take it out, let it cool, and then enjoy your very
04:15 own homemade cake.
04:17 No doubt baking a cake from scratch requires precision and understanding.
04:21 Even if you follow your recipe's directions properly, you should come out with a product
04:27 that looks similar to this picture right here.
04:33 This image from the cookbook, The Essential Cake Boss, by Betty Velastro, shows a perfectly
04:39 moist, spongy, and delectable cake.
04:41 There's no crumbling, and it's held up together very nicely.
04:46 This person clearly followed, understood, measured, and prepared their cake properly.
04:53 As we can see, baking a cake from scratch requires three major steps.
04:59 If you want your cake to look like this, we must read and understand your directions properly,
05:05 follow those directions properly by measuring properly, and lastly, you must prepare your
05:10 baking pan and bake your cake at the proper temperature.
05:12 Sticking with these three steps will help you produce delicious cakes made with your
05:16 own two hands, giving you a sense of pride and accomplishment.
05:20 And the best part is that now you will be able to bake anything.
05:24 So go find a recipe, follow it, and sink your teeth into something delicious.
