00:00 Rick and Morty presents Mr. Nimbus.
00:02 There's padding before we see what the Earth's like far into the future,
00:06 where a giant talking water monster probably controlled by Nimbus is calling out Rick for "this tomorrow".
00:12 And he'd only see it as a tomorrow if he's only here because the time traveled into the future.
00:17 But somehow Rick did it without Morty with him.
00:21 Even though Project Phoenix exists.
00:23 Because we see Morty in a green pod with what I assume is the ghost of Jessica in front of it.
00:28 Rick says they're gonna explode, whatever it is.
00:31 And something radioactive explodes and eventually it goes back in time,
00:36 having not explained anything confusing.
00:38 It cuts back to 1973 where I see Rick on a beach chair near the ocean wondering how he's still alive for some reason.
00:47 Someone blatantly annoying insults him a lot and then offers him coffee, so that's confusing.
00:53 Rick reveals that he's crashing at his house
00:55 and I wonder why he loves having him there when he's rude in a way that might make him fed up.
01:00 We see a spaceship had crashed into his roof.
01:04 It tries to make Earl interesting because he likes writing stories and reading them out.
01:09 Even if it's boring.
01:11 It's nice that he asks Rick if he's okay and wants him to feel welcome here.
01:15 And that all Rick does is get confused and excuse himself.
01:19 He thinks he catches a fish but instead something giant rises out of the ocean
01:24 and there's an incomprehensible page before Nibus welcomes his army to the dry land.
01:30 I always hate his design and I don't know how it got approved.
01:34 The narration really is a waste of time.
01:37 Someone gets a tap on the shoulder and Rick screams and turns around shooting a portal ahead of him.
01:43 Somehow Nibus doesn't react to the fact that he can do this at all.
01:47 Already they've screwed up showing their first meeting.
01:50 He says dry landers have so many emotions as if I'm expected to believe underwater aliens don't have any.
01:57 And he has no reason to think Rick can't feel pain either.
02:01 Rick tells him to run.
02:03 Nibus actually knows his name already.
02:06 And after Nibus says he never runs from a fight, it cuts ahead to them both being alive and on good terms.
02:13 So that's really confusing because I thought the thing threatening Rick was doing so on his behalf.
02:19 Instead he literally just caught it while fishing and it decided to attack on its own.
02:24 But you'd think Nibus would be pissed at him for threatening the life of a fish then.
02:29 Nibus introduces himself to Rick who wonders how he knows his name.
02:33 He's from an underwater kingdom the dry landers don't know about.
02:37 So he'd think he'd be too sheltered to even know who Rick is.
02:41 And if he did, he wouldn't call him Richard.
02:44 He says he knows his name because of electricity.
02:47 Apparently the underwater aliens can read a lot from it.
02:51 Anything's possible with magical aliens.
02:55 I know he can control electricity because he can control the police.
02:59 Which has to be because he controls the electricity in their brains.
03:03 But it always made me wonder how he was only able to control the police in particular.
03:08 So it better be that it's not just them.
03:11 Nibus offers to tell him his life story and Rick sees it in a moment.
03:15 But I'm getting literally nothing out of this page.
03:18 It doesn't tell me anything really.
03:21 Go figure he went to university.
03:23 And I don't know why someone tried to attack him with swords.
03:26 Rick's confused that he's making a friend because something doesn't add up.
03:31 It really doesn't.
03:32 I don't know why Nibus would already want to be friends with him if he knows his name.
03:36 Which has to be because he's already heard of him.
03:38 Unless he's trying to get him to assist the ocean with his technology.
03:42 And he thinks just asking him to do that right away would get him a no.
03:46 Rick doesn't simply say that and instead expects us to believe he never gets confused.
03:51 Because he's an arrogant liar.
03:54 Rick goes up to an alien leaving landmines on the ground and wonders if he's seen Nibus.
04:00 Who talks annoyingly in an unrealistic way as usual.
04:03 Rick makes it clear he's not happy with the world.
04:06 And Nibus says everything that's wet is his.
04:09 Only to somehow call earth wet when the dry land clearly isn't.
04:14 Unless it just rained on it.
04:16 He wants to make the world wet so it could be his enslave and turn to sand.
04:20 Wasting all the valuable resources he could make money off of like a moron.
04:24 Rick agrees with his idea since the world's a lonely and doomed place.
04:28 Even though it'll still be that way if Nibus wins.
04:30 And Nibus is too entitled and wants to crush earth for no apparent reason.
04:34 Meaning he has no reason to trust them to actually make things better.
04:38 Having no reason for his behavior makes the comic's idea of an origin story complete wasted opportunity.
04:43 I just have to assume he hates earthlings because he's bigoted against them.
04:48 And of course the ruler thinks he's got a right to conquer.
04:50 Well they could have assumed that without reading the story if I actually cared enough to think about him again.
04:56 But I don't want to.
04:57 Rick isn't a hero because he's lazy.
05:00 But being lazy would also mean he wouldn't feel like helping someone conquer the world either.
05:04 He's only willing to help someone to humor them if he really likes them.
05:08 And I have to assume he's doing this because of that again.
05:11 Wanting to humor a friend of his.
05:13 But I was never shown why I'd start considering Nibus to be his friend in the first place.
05:17 The whole point of having the story is to show us why they became friends.
05:22 But it's literally just that Nibus sucks up to him from the start.
05:26 And he's got so much appreciation for someone being nice to him that he's willing to do him a huge favor.
05:31 That was easy.
05:34 I figured the point of the story was going to be to show it's a sympathetic side to Nibus.
05:38 Like redeeming qualities so it'd be believable that someone would want to be friends with him.
05:42 If Rick's the type to like someone just because they're nice to him from the start,
05:46 why did he ever try to destroy his world once?
05:48 He calls Rick brilliant and asks him to turn the world to all mud for him.
05:53 Rick rambles about something unrelated to this before agreeing.
05:56 I like that he can admit he's bad at talking.
05:59 But how'd Nibus be so stupid as to call him a fool to his face
06:03 and think being bad with talking means that every time?
06:07 Rick puts on a helmet and presses a button and sends energy at Nibus
06:11 who sends energy at him from his forehead.
06:13 Manifesting in a creature shaped beam of energy that defeats Rick's
06:18 and he takes off the helmet.
06:20 I don't get it.
06:20 Why have this page?
06:22 Nibus wants to show him the ocean.
06:25 Rick immediately loves seeing his underwater kingdom
06:27 which is literally just a bunch of aliens with the giant statues of Nibus's parents near them.
06:33 Why does Rick take the risk of insulting his father's appearance?
06:36 I guess because he already knows Nibus hates his dad enough to not even react to it.
06:41 It turns out he gave Rick gills with bacteria because he's a magic alien after all.
06:48 Rick makes me wonder why he sends any people into the ocean
06:51 because he's got a portal gun to dispose of them in a different universe entirely
06:55 where he'd never be tracked down to.
06:57 Nibus says his favorite class of people is the Merm people
07:01 but they just have to be evil like in the olden fairy tales
07:04 but at least it's creative that they make caviar.
07:07 He says he doesn't control the darkest part of the ocean.
07:10 Rick reveals that he's gone to the future
07:12 which makes sense because he can go to other dimensions
07:14 and so they'd be in the future
07:16 and so some of them would be in the future
07:18 and give him the ability to make future pop culture references.
07:21 If you don't think of that it makes no sense
07:23 because Rick said he hates time travel in the show.
07:26 He chose Rick's favorite place, the library
07:29 which is full of messages in a bottle.
07:31 Rick says he can't imagine being so lonely that he'd appreciate a love story.
07:36 Admits that he has wanted to date someone before
07:38 but knows nobody could understand him because he's a genius surrounded by idiots
07:42 and no one can understand that.
07:44 Nibus relates to that.
07:46 So am I supposed to believe he's a genius too?
07:49 Later, Rick doesn't think him finding love with an equal makes sense
07:53 because he can't have any equals.
07:55 He's smart enough to know that the only constant
07:58 is everyone's either's enemy or will be
08:00 and is relatively confused and annoyed
08:02 because he really has a friendship when he doesn't trust it to last.
08:06 Earl takes forever to get to the point by doing boring rambling.
08:10 It's so nice of Earl to be glad he had a smooch with his new friends
08:14 because I'd never expect that.
08:16 He tells Rick to build trust and he agrees.
08:19 Out of nowhere, we see Nibus being a drama teacher to some kid aliens
08:24 putting on a play
08:25 and tells one of them she could be an actor if she got over a stutter.
08:29 He admits that when he was a kid, he used to be insecure too.
08:32 Rick jumps out of a portal and scares her
08:35 and Nibus tells her to run and says he'll hold off Rick
08:38 who says it's nothing personal
08:40 and reveals he's going to fight a different version of the Nibus he knew.
08:43 And I thought it was a story revealing that Nibus has a soft side and a hobby.
08:48 Too bad because he could have easily had this as a hobby.
08:52 Rick says he's doing this because he needs to know if he can trust him
08:56 and he portals home holding his hand and writes down his name,
08:59 occupation, and how easy it was to defeat him.
09:01 But how is this supposed to teach him that the Nibus he knows isn't going to turn on him?
09:07 He's nothing like the one he's used to.
09:09 It'd be easy to kill anyone by shooting him
09:12 so why does he think he needs to find out how easy it is to defeat Nibus
09:17 without using anything to shoot him with?
09:19 He'd already know.
09:20 That's not even an accurate picture of how it'd be like to defeat him.
09:24 It's not like he went to another dimension
09:25 where he'd get to see an identical Nibus working with him in the future
09:29 where he could see if the future of him is happy or not
09:32 and how far ahead the future is.
09:33 It sure is inconvenient that right after he exits his portal in front of his garage
09:38 the real Nibus goes up to him and wants him to help him
09:41 splash water over a city and take it over.
09:43 At least he's going to have a picnic with him afterwards
09:46 so that's human of him.
09:47 It turns out the reason he turned against Rick
09:49 is that he outright told him that now that he knows he can kill him
09:53 he can trust him
09:54 even though he doesn't have to tell him that
09:56 even though he'd have already known he could kill him.
10:00 Also Nibus was horrified by what he saw
10:02 but the story's way too vague about it for me to know what it is.
10:05 It cuts ahead in time to them fighting way ahead in the future
10:10 and Nibus calls him out that he could have been his friend
10:13 and Rick says he doesn't see the big deal
10:15 because all he did was kill some other versions of him.
10:18 Well he should have known that'd make him think he couldn't trust them not to kill him
10:21 because he even could motivate himself to do that.
10:23 He's right that Nibus shouldn't be so concerned
10:25 because he's not those other versions of himself
10:28 so it wasn't his problem.
10:30 He's already evil enough to want to conquer and ruin the world for no reason
10:34 so why would it be a deal breaker to him that Rick inconvenienced other people than him?
10:39 Rick can erase memories
10:41 so it sure is inconvenient that he didn't erase his memory of this experience
10:44 to get him to stay loyal to him that way effortlessly.
10:47 Oh is he too dumb to know to do that yet?
10:49 He's got a portal gun!
10:51 He could have stolen the tech from another dimension!
10:53 So he didn't want to do something to keep Nibus loyal
10:56 if he was the type to even be opposed to what he did
10:59 but I'm not seeing Rick explain that.
11:01 Nibus says Rick's just dangerous and wanted to teach him to serve him
11:05 and Rick says code words to activate his cyber suit
11:08 which takes a while to do for some reason.
11:10 He tells the multiple mortis he's got working for him
11:13 to turn into a serpent to restrain him for one panel
11:16 and then there's no explanation for how they disappeared and he stood up.
11:20 There's also none for how he's still alive after all this time
11:23 so I have to assume he's mortal because that's how magical his species is.
11:27 In the present, Morty and Rick swim around
11:30 with Rick planning to use Morty to distract the mermaid guards
11:33 and he says right in front of them that he's got a conch to steal
11:36 and gets into a room in the next panel.
11:39 That sure was easy.
11:41 It'd be believable if he simply shot them
11:43 and he has no reason to not bring weapons here.
11:46 Someone talks to Rick who has no reason to still be alive
11:49 and it's not explained properly how because it's a bad story.
11:53 So Flumper says he's loyal to Nibus for fixing him.
11:56 Nibus fights him but it cuts ahead to the future so that was pointless.
12:01 Jessica fires some water at the portal gun to break it
12:05 because she wants to keep time from ending
12:07 even though Rick wouldn't do that
12:10 and somehow we're in a situation where she sees Rick as a would-be conqueror too.
12:16 And Nibus calls her a traitor because the portal goo is gonna mix with the ocean
12:19 to make it an ocean of interdimensional madness
12:22 which we see on the next page
12:24 for no reason when a portal only connects to one universe
12:27 and only after it was told to by a button press
12:30 and that button was never pressed.
12:32 So there's no reason the portal goo would connect to any portals
12:36 and if it did, all that happened is that the ocean would disappear into the portals.
12:40 This isn't what contact with portal goo does to people.
12:44 Season 5 established that it just sticks to your hands.
12:48 There's a narration saying Rick and him lived infinite lives after that
12:52 but why would they're reincarnating to other versions of themselves every time
12:56 when that'd be insanely boring and each other version would be in a different universe?
13:00 I don't get it.
13:01 It only makes sense if it means they're just seeing other dimensions
13:04 and aren't actually living like their counterparts.
13:07 Somehow there's a universe where Rick was raised by Nibus as a baby.
13:12 We see Nibus tell Rick to hurry and they get on a moving train
13:16 and Rick thanks him for helping him get into one of the empty carts.
13:20 They plan on running away to the ocean
13:22 and then we see 1973 again
13:25 and when Nibus's ship goes to dry land in front of Rick
13:29 the story cops out on having an ending because it just ends there
13:33 so that really sucks.
13:35 I don't even know why they had a "here we go again" ending.
13:37 As I expected, this story sucked
13:40 and not just because I hate Nibus.
13:42 It also doesn't bother explaining why Rick didn't erase Nibus's memory
13:46 of the thing that made him turn on him if he wanted to be friends at that point
13:49 when he could go to another dimension and get that technology if he hadn't made it.
13:54 It should have been that Nibus did something to him
13:57 and a lot of the issue's panels are stolen by padding
14:01 because it's an unfocused plot constantly shifting between time periods
14:05 to pointlessly show him fighting with Rick
14:07 when the only real plot is in showing us how they met
14:11 and it doesn't bother explaining why Nibus already knows about Rick
14:14 enough to be nice to him right away to try to get him to work for him
14:18 when it really comes out of nowhere to me that he can read electricity to know a person.
14:23 So it's not like how you'd expect from the very first panel he talked to him in
14:28 and he's lucky Rick considers him an equal when he's not a mad scientist.
