00:00 What is a turnaround?
00:02 Well, whether you call them shutdowns, outages, or turnarounds,
00:08 they'll all produce the same results.
00:10 Turnarounds are scheduled events where an entire process unit
00:14 of an industrial plant is taken off stream for a scheduled period of time
00:18 to perform maintenance, inspections, and testing.
00:21 Once the plant is off stream, the downtime presents an opportunity.
00:25 That can be used to perform debottlenecking, capital project improvements,
00:30 revamps, and catalyst regeneration projects.
00:33 Turnarounds allow for necessary maintenance and the upkeep of operating units.
00:38 Turnarounds are needed to maintain safe and efficient operations.
00:42 If you think of an oil refinery the way you think of your car,
00:45 you'll realize there are many types of routine maintenance you need to perform
00:49 on your car to keep it running efficiently.
00:51 You should get your oil changed every 3,000 miles.
00:54 You should get new tires every 50,000 miles or so, depending on the brand.
00:59 Then there's your power steering fluid, your transmission, air filters, gaskets,
01:04 and that's just routine maintenance.
01:06 What if something malfunctions?
01:08 Let's say you drive your car for work every day, and that's how you make your living.
01:12 When the time comes to make these repairs and maintenance services,
01:15 not only will you be spending money, but you'll be losing money
01:18 since you're not able to use your car for work.
01:21 Wouldn't this make you want to carefully plan what repairs you would make
01:25 so that you could spend only what you needed to spend
01:28 and lose as little money as possible during that downtime?
01:32 Now imagine that your car is making you millions of dollars every day.
01:36 Well, maybe that's a bit of a stretch for one car,
01:39 but it isn't a stretch when it comes to a refinery.
01:42 When a refinery shuts down for repairs, maintenance, and compliance with regulations,
01:47 there is no production, and that means the refinery is losing money at that time.
01:52 What happens to the materials that are regularly delivered to the refinery?
01:56 What happens to the other facilities that depend on the oil products
01:59 that usually come from the refinery?
02:02 How many workers are needed to perform the maintenance and repairs?
02:05 Are there enough qualified workers available to carry out all the needed repairs?
02:10 Turnarounds are very expensive, both in terms of production that is lost
02:14 while the process unit is offline and also in terms of direct costs for the labor,
02:19 tools, heavy equipment, and materials used to execute the turnaround.
02:24 Turnarounds are the most significant portion of a plant's yearly maintenance budget
02:28 and can affect the company's bottom line if they are mismanaged.
02:31 Turnarounds have unique project management characteristics,
02:34 which make them volatile and challenging.
02:38 At EPCM PSI, we specialize in project management for turnarounds
02:43 as well as capital and routine maintenance.
02:45 We are experts in Primavera, the industry standard software for scheduling.
02:50 We schedule the work to be done through the use of our trademarked
02:53 dynamic scheduling methodology called float-based prioritization.
02:58 Our methodology has been proven as an effective way to manage turnarounds
03:02 at any type of outage, on time, and within budget.
03:05 We also plan, estimate, and provide cost controls.
03:09 EPCM PSI's motto is to provide solutions and valued service
03:13 as opposed to simply providing resources.
03:16 EPCM PSI helps your company plan for success.
