00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:11 Dave and I first saw Pixel when we had dinner with Paul
00:14 Wilson at the 2008 Blackpool convention.
00:19 We saw it, and both our mouths were wide open.
00:22 We were fooled.
00:23 It was one of the coolest things we've seen in a while,
00:25 and it's so easy.
00:28 We soon found out it belonged to David Jade,
00:31 so we contacted him, and this is now
00:34 one of several things of his that we'll be offering.
00:36 It can be done on the table, in the hands,
00:42 as you saw in the performance.
00:43 It's an ambitious card routine, a one-phase ambitious card
00:46 routine.
00:47 And it can even be applied to the end
00:49 sequence of your own ambitious card routine.
00:53 With that said, let's go ahead and get into the explanation,
00:56 which will take no time at all, because this trick is almost
01:00 self-working.
01:01 It's that easy, and it's still really cool.
01:03 Let's talk about the type of rubber band
01:13 you need to achieve this effect.
01:17 This right here is a size 16 latex-free real rubber rubber
01:24 band.
01:25 It's made out of real rubber.
01:27 It's 2 and 1/2 inches in diameter and 1/16 of an inch
01:31 in length.
01:32 You can find these at your local office supply store.
01:35 I just went online and bought a pack of 500 for $8, very cheap.
01:41 So once you have your rubber bands,
01:43 just place them in your pocket, or place one in your pocket,
01:46 until you're ready to perform the effect.
01:49 Now take out your deck of cards and have a card selected.
01:55 You need to control the selection
01:57 to the top of the deck.
01:59 We'll skip that phase, because there are many controls
02:02 out there that hopefully you already know.
02:05 I mean, on our site, we have the cherry control, the cascade
02:08 control.
02:09 Those are two great controls if you haven't already
02:11 picked them up, or if you're looking for controls
02:13 to the top of the deck.
02:15 Either way, we're going to skip that phase
02:18 and just place the card on top of the deck.
02:20 So our selection, the king of diamonds.
02:25 Now turn the deck face up so the card is now on bottom.
02:32 And pull down that card with your little finger,
02:36 separating it from the deck.
02:40 Because what you're going to do with the rubber band
02:43 is wrap everything but their selection with the rubber band.
02:49 So you're going to wrap the deck minus their selection
02:53 with the rubber band.
02:55 So that card is on bottom free of the rubber band.
02:59 You're going to position the band slightly above center.
03:04 This will allow your index finger
03:08 to be behind the strap of the rubber band,
03:12 not in front like that, but behind the strap.
03:17 You can easily feel it, so I know I'm behind it.
03:22 You're going to wrap the rubber band a second time
03:24 around the deck.
03:27 So pick up, transfer to your middle finger with like a hook,
03:33 and you're going to wrap the rubber band clockwise
03:37 around the deck.
03:39 And watch my index finger is used to simply align both bands
03:46 as one as I wrap the rubber band around the deck,
03:52 ending exactly where I started.
03:56 So now release, turn over, and pinch everything.
04:01 So you're holding everything together.
04:03 Now it's important not to let go of that middle finger.
04:07 If you do, the effect will happen too soon,
04:10 and it won't be much of an effect.
04:13 So from here, once you have the deck wrapped with the rubber
04:18 band, you're going to use this corner on the table
04:24 to trap the rubber band on the bottom of the deck
04:28 so it's now trapped using the weight of the cards.
04:34 A simple movement or a slight movement or tap on the table
04:39 will cause that rubber band to fly around,
04:43 revealing the top selection.
04:44 So let's give it a try.
04:45 And it looks like their card visually
04:53 comes through as you saw in the performance,
04:57 and that's the selection.
04:59 Now that's the tabled version.
05:01 There is an in-the-hands version, which
05:04 is more or less the same thing.
05:06 And I'll get into that now, as well as a few finer points
05:10 that I left out here.
05:11 [MUSIC PLAYING]
05:14 All right, I'm going to take a brief moment
05:19 to talk about the discrepancy of wrapping the rubber
05:22 band around the deck twice.
05:25 Well, you're not really wrapping the rubber band
05:27 around the deck twice.
05:29 If you were to place the rubber band around the deck,
05:33 this action is very casual.
05:37 It should just be done on the offbeat.
05:39 You're basically showing the rubber band is clearly
05:43 around all the cards.
05:46 So with their selection on bottom,
05:48 it's more or less the same thing.
05:51 You're just wrapping it, or you're just showing it.
05:55 That's how it should be.
05:56 So you shouldn't really call attention to it.
05:59 It's on the deck.
06:00 Look, it's really on the deck.
06:02 I'll set it on the table.
06:04 That's all you need to do.
06:05 So it's just on the offbeat.
06:07 It's a very casual manner.
06:09 You don't have to worry about it or call attention to it.
06:12 With that said, look at the deck now.
06:16 You'll see that it looks like it's wrapped twice.
06:20 And now it's wrapped once.
06:23 This is not a huge deal.
06:25 I'm sure the effect is so strong.
06:26 Your spectator will never notice it.
06:28 But it does help to use that index finger
06:31 to try and align both bands as one,
06:35 or as close to one as possible.
06:38 Just a few thoughts on that.
06:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
06:44 OK, guys.
06:48 So a few thoughts on the rubber band.
06:52 Now, I'm a card guy.
06:54 I typically don't do anything but cards.
06:57 But this effect is so cool and so strong,
07:00 I think, that it merits having a rubber band.
07:04 With that said, I would never carry a rubber band
07:08 on my wrist like I see many magicians out there.
07:12 It just looks tacky.
07:13 And I think you're calling way too much attention to yourself.
07:15 The least you could do is just have it in your pocket,
07:21 and then pull out some change, and then find a rubber band.
07:24 And maybe that strikes an idea of, oh, hey, let me try this.
07:28 Or let's try this.
07:30 What I like to do is just maybe set it somewhere on the table
07:34 if you're at a restaurant, or if you're in a cafe,
07:37 maybe on the counter.
07:39 If you're in a shopping mall, maybe just on a kiosk.
07:42 Just anywhere, just so it looks like you casually
07:45 find a rubber band, which makes it more organic and impromptu,
07:51 and maybe reminds you of something, or sparks an idea
07:56 of this effect.
07:57 So it just seems more impromptu and natural, rather than, hey,
08:00 look, I have a rubber band.
08:02 I'm a magician.
08:02 Whee!
08:04 Anyway, that's some thoughts on the rubber band.
08:07 Now I'll get into the in-the-hands version
08:11 of the effect.
08:13 Now I agree, and I'm sure David Jade agrees,
08:16 and many others who know this effect,
08:18 that the on-the-table version is a lot stronger, because for one,
08:23 you're not touching the deck, and it just
08:25 seems more visual when you just back up, and it comes to the top,
08:29 and you can let them turn it over.
08:31 But sometimes you don't have a table,
08:35 so there's the in-the-hands version, which does
08:41 offer a few slightly cool ideas.
08:47 So let's give it a try.
08:49 It's exactly the same setup.
08:52 Instead of putting the deck on the table,
08:55 you're just going to put it in your hand.
08:57 Now what's nice about this, as I said,
09:00 you can control the timing of when it shoots.
09:08 So this opens the doors to a few possibilities.
09:12 You can have the spectator say go.
09:15 You can have the spectator snap their fingers,
09:19 clap, blink, whatever you like.
09:22 I mean, this is pretty strong, because you
09:24 have that option of making it come to the top
09:28 basically whenever you want.
09:32 Go.
09:34 It comes to the top.
09:36 And instead of hitting the table,
09:40 you're just moving your hand slightly.
09:43 Give it a try.
09:47 So it's here.
09:48 So watch my hand.
09:50 Just slightly moves.
09:52 And that will cause the rubber band
09:53 to release from the bottom of your hand,
09:56 making the card come to the top.
09:59 So that's the in-the-hands version.
10:01 I like both methods.
10:03 But again, I prefer the one on the table
10:05 if you have a table present.
10:08 And that's Pixel by David Jade.
10:11 Hope you guys enjoy it.
