00:00 Hi guys, this is windowpane.
00:03 This is a great effect involving the spectator signing a card, you visually tear their card,
00:09 place all four pieces in their hand, and then piece by piece their card appears in a drawn
00:13 window in your hand.
00:15 And it ends with a great kicker and the spectator gets to keep a nice souvenir at the end.
00:19 It's fast, visual, and fun, so let's check out windowpane.
00:23 Adam, nice to meet you guys.
00:25 Alright, Christian, do you guys, either of you believe in voodoo?
00:29 A little bit?
00:30 Me neither.
00:31 Alright, cool, but for the trick it sounds good, right?
00:33 Alright, so Christian, touch a card that you feel like connected with on some level.
00:37 Yeah, just touch one, doesn't matter.
00:39 You can take it out though.
00:40 I'll take it out.
00:41 Yeah, which one?
00:42 That one?
00:43 Okay, I can see it too, it's not one of those.
00:44 Seven of diamonds, do you feel good about that?
00:46 Sure.
00:47 Cool, alright, well if you feel connected to this card, then if I went like this, that
00:52 probably wouldn't feel too good.
00:53 I just folded it.
00:54 Yeah, exactly.
00:55 Oh, excellent, cool, alright.
00:56 So you're playing along, that's awesome.
00:58 Most people don't, okay.
00:59 So if I went like this though, this would be discomfort to you, if we were doing like
01:03 a voodoo type thing, right?
01:04 So I'm going to give you the card, what I want you to do is take this marker and actually
01:07 write your name on the side right there.
01:11 That way you get more connected to it, because your name's actually on it.
01:14 I won't take any of your hair or anything like that.
01:16 You know, some people like voodoo and stuff like that.
01:18 Yeah, it's like getting a girl to tap you.
01:21 Exactly, you just got the seven of diamonds.
01:22 It's just like tapping for the match next to the boyfriend.
01:23 Exactly.
01:24 Yeah, we're meant for each other.
01:25 Did you know a girl named seven of diamonds?
01:26 No.
01:27 Okay, alright, here's what I'm going to do.
01:28 I'm going to take it and cause a little bit more discomfort, okay?
01:32 So just think about this.
01:34 Ouch, right?
01:35 A little bit?
01:36 Okay, I'll keep going.
01:37 Are you right or left handed?
01:38 I'm ambidextrous.
01:39 Ambidextrous?
01:40 Alright, hold out your right hand.
01:41 One piece of you is just ripped off.
01:42 How do you feel?
01:43 You can be honest.
01:44 Left hand gone.
01:45 Left hand gone, alright, cool.
01:46 Well, if you didn't seem too painful, so we'll do the rest of them, okay?
01:47 Alright, did that hurt that bad?
01:58 Okay, I'll take the pieces.
02:01 Have you guys ever heard of alligator?
02:03 You like hold your hands like an alligator?
02:04 Do you mind doing that?
02:05 Here, we'll come over here so you guys, you can stand right there.
02:08 Face me actually.
02:09 Is that cool?
02:10 Yeah, and I'll like come over next to Adam.
02:11 Is that cool?
02:12 Awesome.
02:13 So that way you can see it best with the sun and everything.
02:14 And then put your hand on top real quick.
02:17 Put your hand on top.
02:18 And then I'm going to draw something for you, alright?
02:19 So just don't move the alligator, as corny as that sounds, okay?
02:20 So I'm going to draw like a window, and I want you to imagine being able to see yourself
02:21 inside this window.
02:22 That's as abstract as it gets.
02:23 You see that?
02:24 Okay, so imagine seeing yourself for like the seven in there.
02:25 And watch real close.
02:26 Adam, check this out.
02:27 Ready?
02:28 You just wave like this.
02:29 You get a little bit of you to show up.
02:30 And then I'm going to draw a little bit of you.
02:31 And then I'm going to draw a little bit of you.
02:32 And then I'm going to draw a little bit of you.
02:33 And then I'm going to draw a little bit of you.
02:34 And then I'm going to draw a little bit of you.
02:55 A little bit more.
03:21 They need more help though.
03:22 Check this out.
03:23 So you see yourself in the window, and you're just like this.
03:25 You start to see it, right?
03:26 Yeah?
03:27 Okay, check it out.
03:28 Just like this.
03:29 A little bit more.
03:30 Okay, watch.
03:31 Last, you know what, since you're freaking out, I'll stop on that one.
03:32 Right there.
03:33 Open up your hand.
03:34 Check this out.
03:35 Oh!
03:36 You're doing some shit!
03:37 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:38 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:39 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:40 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:41 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:42 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:43 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:44 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:45 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:46 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:47 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:48 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:49 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:50 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:51 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:52 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:53 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:54 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:55 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:56 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:57 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:58 Oh, you're doing some shit!
03:59 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:00 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:01 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:02 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:03 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:04 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:05 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:06 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:07 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:08 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:09 Oh, you're doing some shit!
04:10 So, I'm going to show you the gimmick, what it is, how to use it, and the setup before
04:14 we get into how to present this.
04:16 So, what you have accomplishing all of the magic business is a double backer card.
04:24 Whatever deck you're using, have it be a double backer.
04:26 And what you're going to do is take your double backer as it is, fold it right down the middle,
04:32 and crease it both ways so you have a good crease worked in.
04:35 And then you're going to fold it the other way, so vertically and horizontally.
04:40 Crease it both ways, and then whenever you've done that, take one of the ways on the short
04:45 side and rip it right down to the middle.
04:48 I'll explain the marker in just a moment, but just get to this point so far.
04:53 What you also need is a deck of cards that matches the double backer, and on the bottom
05:00 of the deck you're going to reverse the bottom card, and then you're also going to pull out
05:05 of the deck a dummy card, which you're going to need to switch out, which actually gets
05:09 torn.
05:10 You're going to do the exact same thing as you did with this by folding it down the middle
05:14 both ways, get the creases worked in, and then you're just going to actually rip off
05:19 the index corner of the card.
05:21 So this is your dummy card, and you need your double backer with the rip in it.
05:28 So the double backer with the rip in it goes on the bottom of the deck, on top of that
05:32 one face down card, with the opening facing towards your right.
05:38 So that is there, and that can work both ways here.
05:42 Then what you're going to do is take your dummy card and place it face down so that
05:49 the opening is to the bottom left of you, fold the extra flap under, set it right on
05:55 top here, and you're going to keep it in place by holding the edges with your thumb, index
05:59 finger, and outside fingers.
06:02 And then everything gets turned over.
06:04 So you just have to be weary of this piece sliding around, that you keep it towards the
06:07 top while you do any handling of the deck.
06:10 So that's the setup of the effect.
06:13 Now the actual presentation of the effect, you need to have this previously set up so
06:17 this can be in the box just like this, so you pull it out.
06:20 The one other thing you need is a sharpie or marker for the signatures in your pocket,
06:26 because it's important that you go back and forth between your pocket as if it's just
06:30 a second thought, but it's very important.
06:32 So you have any card selected, and you make sure that they feel a connection with the
06:36 card if you're presenting it the way I did.
06:39 So they pull out a card, and you say, "If you're connected with this card," and you
06:43 go ahead and fold it in half, almost like a voodoo presentation, and you're explaining
06:49 to them that this should hurt if they're really connected with the card.
06:52 Depending on your style, you can present it however you want, but basically you need their
06:56 card to be folded both ways.
06:58 Okay?
06:59 Then what you're going to do is say, "To make this card a little bit more connected to you,
07:03 you're going to hand them the card, and you're going to ask them to sign it."
07:06 So you give them the card, you go to your pocket, you pull out your marker, hand the
07:11 marker to them, and give them a moment to sign their card.
07:14 While all the attention is there, you can still be talking.
07:17 All you're going to do is reverse your hand on the deck, so that now the top of the deck
07:24 is your setup.
07:26 But you keep your hand, your left hand, palm down, so that none of that comes into view
07:31 too early.
07:32 Okay?
07:33 So let's say, for the sake of teaching, they sign the card.
07:38 You can make a note, it's not that big of a deal, but if it's a non-court card, if they
07:42 sign their name so that it covers ink in all four corners, it gives a better presentation
07:47 when the corners appear.
07:49 So that's there.
07:50 Then when you ask for the card back, you bring your palms up toward your chest, so that they
07:55 still think this is the back of the deck, and what you're covering is all of this business.
08:00 So to keep that down, you can pull that down, if you want, just to keep that out of view
08:04 here.
08:05 To keep this so it's easy access, you're going to want to keep your pinky at least under
08:09 here, and if you want to pull this down, you can hold that down with your ring finger.
08:14 It might not seem important now, but it will for the switch you're going to do in just
08:17 a second.
08:18 So all this happens while they're signing it.
08:20 So you have all the time and misdirection in the world.
08:22 As long as you're not looking at the deck, they won't look at the deck.
08:25 So the deck gets flipped over, you put your pinky here, ring finger there.
08:29 You ask for the card back, and you ask for the marker back.
08:33 That's important.
08:34 And you place the marker back into your pocket.
08:37 Then what you're going to do is another little voodoo gag.
08:40 You're going to rip the hip index corner off of the card, and you're going to make a big
08:46 deal about it, asking them, "Does this hurt?"
08:48 So you rip off this corner here, and you actually give them this piece.
08:54 And as you give them that piece, you ask them, "Did that hurt?"
08:58 And while you're asking them, "Did that hurt?"
09:00 You ripped off to yourself the upper left corner of the card.
09:06 You're going to take the card, slide it into that opening that you've held open.
09:11 It goes into the opening, fold it down.
09:17 This gets pushed forward, and levered up.
09:21 So basically what you're doing is you're switching their card for the dummy card.
09:24 So I'll show you what that looks like from the front.
09:28 Say, "Did that hurt?"
09:31 This just looks like you're fiddling with the card, when in actuality you've switched
09:34 out the card, and you've loaded the card for the finale.
09:38 So I'll show you that one more time, and I'll get into the lines, what those mean.
09:43 So this, to them, this is the exposed view.
09:46 You're going to slide this into the opening here.
09:49 This just goes under.
09:51 This gets folded down.
09:53 Your pinky holds that in place.
09:55 And then your index finger pushes this forward and opens it up, as if you're just fiddling
10:00 with their card.
10:01 So it should be invisible to them.
10:04 So once you've switched this out, you've asked them, "Did that hurt?"
10:07 No matter what their answer is, you say, "Okay, we're going to take this a step further and
10:11 actually rip the card up really well."
10:14 So they remember that you ripped their card up into four pieces, but what you actually
10:17 did was you ripped the dummy card up.
10:20 Now what you're going to do is ask for that piece back from them, and you're going to
10:24 add it to the other pieces, so that if in talking you accidentally flash these pieces,
10:31 they still see that piece here.
10:33 But for the most part, all of these pieces will be away from yourself.
10:37 So what you ask the spectators, "Are they familiar with the alligator hands?"
10:40 Like an old game or song.
10:42 So you have them hold their hands open like so.
10:45 And what you're going to do is, in acting like you place all of the pieces into their
10:49 hand, you're only going to place one card into their hand and keep three.
10:54 And how you're doing that is expose what's going on face down, as these go into finger
11:02 palm, and just that bottom piece gets slid forward and placed into their hand.
11:08 So you come out dirty with three pieces palmed in your hand, but they'll only be there for
11:13 just a second, because you're about to go to your pocket conveniently for the marker.
11:17 So I'll show you that again.
11:19 You ask for that piece back, you add it to the other three, you say, "Now we're going
11:23 to do something strange with the four pieces."
11:24 You ask them, "Are they familiar with the alligator hands?"
11:27 And you can gesture pretty freely without flashing the situation here.
11:31 So they say yes or no, you explain it to them.
11:34 They open their hands, you take all the pieces, place it into their hand here, and you say,
11:40 "Close your alligator mouth."
11:41 They close, and because of the awkwardness of their hands, they won't be able to tell
11:45 there's only one piece in their hands.
11:47 You come out with three, and you say, "Now I'm going to draw something on the deck."
11:51 Your hand goes to your pocket with these three pieces, and it ditches off those three pieces
11:57 and comes back with the marker.
12:00 And you come up to view here.
12:02 What you're going to do is draw on the card a window.
12:06 And since you haven't set this up yet, the first time while you're practicing, you only
12:09 need to set this up once.
12:11 What you'll do is you'll just scribble over the folds, that way the creases in the card
12:16 actually disappear.
12:17 And you'll notice, I'll take out their card just for a moment so you can see this.
12:23 If you just draw lines, scribble lines down the creases, they will actually disappear
12:29 in the scribbling.
12:31 Remember, their card was put in here, and since their card was added on, there'll be
12:37 a little bit of clean space here and clean space here.
12:41 So to make that disappear, you scribble in here, and you scribble down here.
12:47 So now that card vanishes amongst the window.
12:51 And you say, "Since you have a relationship with those pieces and it's you, I want you
12:55 to imagine seeing yourself in this window."
12:58 So you put the marker away, and you're basically, the effect is done at this point.
13:03 What you're going to do is reveal their card by opening up the gimmick.
13:08 So your thumb is going to come down, your pinky and middle finger, or ring finger, are
13:13 going to release so that card pops up.
13:16 You push with your thumb so that piece comes into view, and once it reaches the top, your
13:22 middle finger and index finger grab that card there.
13:25 So that's the first piece.
13:27 Then you're going to, I'll show you that one more time, just like this.
13:32 And again, to cover that up, you're going to shake so it looks like that, so that piece
13:36 comes into view.
13:38 Then you're going to rotate the deck 180 degrees, just by turning it, and then re-gripping all
13:44 the edges.
13:45 Because if you were to let go, all the corners would pop up.
13:48 So you're going to keep all the edges held down, and now your thumb is just going to
13:53 push over this one here.
13:56 Okay?
13:57 Now it's important to note the first time you're doing this, there will be no lines
14:01 here.
14:02 So if you're really picky about the effect, you'll add lines onto your gimmick here at
14:05 this point.
14:06 This is in practicing.
14:08 So for the third piece, you're going to do a similar action, but instead of doing it
14:12 one-handed with your thumb, which can be finicky and isn't always 100% accurate, you're going
14:17 to actually bring your right hand into play for this.
14:20 So your right hand is going to come across, and this is the side view the spectator doesn't
14:25 see.
14:26 When your hand blocks the view of the card from the spectator, your middle finger, index
14:31 finger, release those cards here, and your right hand comes down and pulls those out
14:39 of the way of the card.
14:40 So it's actually opening, your right hand is coming over, the bottoms of your fingertips
14:47 are grabbing the card, your thumb from underneath closes that, and waves, which brings the third
14:52 piece into view.
14:53 So what the spectator sees is the second piece here, and then with the wave of your fingertips,
14:59 that third piece, which is very disarming to them because they think that all three
15:03 pieces, all four are in their hand.
15:05 So then, as if you're going to make the last one appear here, which they think is impossible
15:09 because they thought they had all four pieces in their hand, you go to do it, and almost
15:13 as if you don't want to or you change your mind, you say, "You know what?
15:17 We're just going to stop right here."
15:19 And you bring this card directly towards them, which is very disarming because you don't
15:23 do any switch.
15:24 What they see is what they get.
15:25 And all you're doing at this point is with your pinky and ring finger is gripping down
15:32 on the gimmick right here, and your right hand comes under and picks up the edge of
15:37 this, and these lines here will go unnoticed because all of the attention will be on their
15:43 card.
15:44 As the card pops off of here, this arm goes down, and this card goes towards them, and
15:49 right about the time this card goes towards them, you have them open their hands, and
15:54 they notice that the piece that's been in their hands the entire time matches the card.
16:01 And then just to clean up, you just put your hands face down.
16:04 You can go on to your next effect just by putting the deck away or getting rid of just
16:09 this one little gimmick.
16:11 So that is the explanation.
16:18 Now guys, what I want to talk to you about is what you can do if you don't own a double
16:22 back or can't get a hold of one.
16:23 Obviously that's the best choice because the card is the thinnest, but you can actually
16:28 make a gimmick with double stick tape and two cards that will accomplish the exact same
16:33 thing.
16:34 It'll just be a little bit thicker, and it'll be a slight discrepancy.
16:36 So with the double backer, what you have going for you is on both sides, you don't have to
16:41 worry about the red, but what you can do is make one out of two normal cards, and all
16:46 you do is you make the front the exact same with the cross through it and the break on
16:51 your right side, and then if you turn over this card, what you're going to want to do
16:56 is tear off a quarter of a card and just double stick tape it onto this piece here.
17:02 All that is is double stick tape, and then you want to place another quarter of a card
17:07 on this piece.
17:08 You don't want the two quarters to be connected because then it won't be able to be folded
17:13 as nicely.
17:15 So with this card, you're accomplishing the exact same thing as this gimmick.
17:19 It's just a little bit thicker, but that's the only issue.
17:22 So that's how you accomplish this without a double backer.
17:25 [music]
