00:24 Both Blake Voigt and I would like to take a moment to thank Michael Weber for allowing
00:28 us to release this version of his brilliant effect, "Four Dollars and Change," from
00:33 his book, "Lifesavers."
00:35 Michael Weber is one of magic's greatest thinkers, and if you don't have Lifesavers, get it now.
00:41 Thank you, Michael.
00:43 Hello, I'm Blake Voigt, and welcome to Ringer.
00:48 Before we get started on the explanations and performances, I just wanted to thank you
00:52 for purchasing this DVD, and I wanted to talk to you about a few of the fine points about
00:57 this effect to keep in mind before you start practicing it or go out to perform it.
01:01 People ask you for this.
01:03 They're always asking me, "What's up with the ring?" or in some way, they're asking me
01:06 that.
01:07 And they don't ask you that in the sense of you being a magician.
01:12 They ask you in an uncomplicated way, just harmlessly, "What's that on your finger?
01:18 What is that?
01:19 Will you make me one of these?"
01:21 And then you've gotten yourself into a situation where you're performing magic for someone
01:26 upon their request, and it's something they want, and you don't have to go out and do
01:32 that.
01:33 Another thing is covering your territory.
01:34 If you're at a restaurant gig or a corporate function or a wedding, and someone's hired
01:40 you to do the event, if you do this effect to people, they're walking around the event
01:44 now with rings on their fingers.
01:46 So it's a way of marking where you've been, and it shows the person who's hired you for
01:50 the gig that you've hit a lot of area.
01:53 And they see people walking away with souvenirs, and that gets the crowd talking about you,
01:58 and it's a good way of showing where all you've hit and that you've done your job.
02:02 In a lot of effects, it's very difficult for someone to approach you and ask you for a
02:06 specific effect.
02:08 For example, card to mouth.
02:10 If someone came up to you as a magician and said, "Can you do that trick where the card
02:13 goes to your mouth?"
02:14 Well, sure, you're going to be able to do it a few effects in with the appropriate misdirection,
02:19 but you can't go straight into that effect because of the nature of what they just asked
02:23 you.
02:24 But the beauty about this effect is that someone sees someone at the event walking around with
02:28 a ring, or they hear about it from their friends, and they say, "Can you show me the trick with
02:33 the ring?"
02:34 It's kind of confusing.
02:35 Even if the person explains it very detailed, they say, "The magician took my dollar bill,
02:40 and magically he folded it into this ring, he made me this ring."
02:44 So it doesn't really give away a lot of what's going to happen if someone hasn't seen the
02:47 effect before.
02:48 Another thing, one more final thing, is that this is not something that you always have
02:53 to have on you, on your finger, to be ready to do.
02:56 You can keep this ring in your pocket if you want.
02:59 It's magnetic.
03:00 I'll tip the method there.
03:01 So you have to be careful about walking into metal and stuff at that point and keeping
03:07 it on your finger.
03:08 But one final thing that I wanted to let you know is that you don't always have to have
03:12 the ring folded up.
03:13 The way I store this in my wallet is folded up, ready to go with the gimmick, and a ring
03:19 not folded.
03:20 So if at any point I want to do this effect, I can do it on the spot.
03:25 So those are some few very important points I wanted you to be aware of before we get
03:29 started.
03:30 But let's go out and hit the streets, that way you can see what this looks like live.
03:34 Thanks.
03:37 Now, if you're into origami whatsoever, you probably already know how to fold a dollar
03:44 bill origami ring.
03:46 And as you can see here, there are very big differences between the ring that I use and
03:52 the normal origami fold.
03:54 Just to point out a couple very quickly, for one thing, the five, when it changes, as you
04:00 notice from the gimmick, it changes from a five without any text to a one without any
04:05 text.
04:06 So if you use the classic fold, there's a little bit of discrepancy here, which is very
04:09 minuscule, and you don't really need to worry about that if you don't want to.
04:13 And if you're very comfortable with folding this, the gimmick that you make will work
04:18 on this just as well.
04:19 But one other subtlety that's different between the two folds that I've developed is that
04:25 on the original origami ring, you can see the word "one" on the bottom of the band.
04:32 And on this fold, there is no word "one."
04:36 So while wearing this, if you cover up the "one" with the five gimmick, which you will,
04:41 you will cover up everything or any evidence of this being a one dollar bill underneath
04:47 the five.
04:48 So how to fold that is you're going to want to take a one dollar bill.
04:53 Now the condition of the one is a little bit important.
04:55 You want to take a dollar bill out that is in not brand new condition and not very old
05:02 condition.
05:03 You want to put it somewhere in the middle, preferably, so that way at the end when it's
05:07 folded into a ring, the discrepancy between the bill they give you at the beginning and
05:11 the bill they give you at the end is not that great.
05:14 And you also don't want any visible writings on the dollar bill to tip that the bill they
05:19 give you at the end is different.
05:20 So once you have that bill here, you're going to want to have it so George Washington's
05:25 face is towards the sky and that the face of the bill is towards you.
05:29 I'll be doing this upside down so you at home can follow along right side up with the camera.
05:36 So the first fold you're going to want to do is you're going to make a horizontal crease
05:41 along the bill directly under the top right serial number.
05:47 And how you're going to do that is take the bill, fold it under and find where that is
05:53 a good space and you're going to crease the bill here very tight along your table with
05:59 your fingernail or with your finger or any hard surface.
06:04 There.
06:05 The next fold you're going to want to do is you're going to want to take the top of the
06:09 bill and fold it underneath creating a nice thin bar framing this one here in the upper
06:15 right hand corner.
06:17 So you're going to take this crease that you've done and kind of unfold it here and now you
06:22 have the bill upside down with the word one upside down.
06:26 So you're looking at the back of the bill and you're going to want to take the bottom
06:29 of the bill and fold it up to the sky and your visual cue here is right above the words
06:37 in God we trust.
06:38 You can see you're going to just fold it horizontally so it just touches the tips of those words
06:45 there and this is creased nice and clean along there.
06:50 At this point you keep that crease engaged and fold up again.
06:57 This is engaging the crease you made first.
06:59 So what you should have is the number one in the upper right hand corner of your bill
07:03 should be nicely framed at this point.
07:07 Next we're going to do is you're going to create another horizontal fold directly along
07:12 the top of the line that you've already created with the face of the bill.
07:16 But this time you're going to deal with the underside and you're going to fold the top
07:21 of the bill under along this line.
07:25 So how you can do that, you're going to turn the whole bill over so that George is upside
07:30 down to you and the face is up and you're going to take the top and fold it down and
07:37 you're going to crease it along the edge so that these edges line up.
07:42 And a good visual cue on the back of the one dollar bill is that you're just going to be
07:47 showing the bottom of the word one.
07:51 And just so you know for later, this portion of the bill is the bill that they will be
07:55 seeing.
07:56 That's why in a moment you're going to cover up any evidence of this being a one dollar
07:59 bill.
08:01 So in a minute when you cover up the words one dollar, the portion exposed to the spectator
08:08 for any point in time does not say the word one anywhere.
08:11 So once this crease is made horizontally, you're now going to take the word one dollar
08:17 and get rid of it by folding it under and into the bill.
08:21 So how you're going to do that is turn the whole thing over again so that now you can
08:26 see the face of the bill, the top of George's head is facing up and you're going to open
08:32 up your previously made crease and you're going to take the bottom of the bill here
08:38 and fold it up.
08:41 And the visual cue here is it's going to be folded right above the words one dollar.
08:47 Just the tips of the letters should touch that crease.
08:52 Once that crease is made nice and tight and crisp, you're going to fold the bill back
08:57 down.
08:58 That's going to place the word one dollar inside the bill.
09:01 So now at this point, nowhere in the middle of either side does it say the word one, which
09:08 is good, but in a moment this is going to be placed on the inside of the ring so this
09:11 side doesn't matter.
09:12 What we're dealing with is this space on the bill and you cannot see the word one.
09:18 So now at this point, you're going to determine the size of the ring.
09:22 Now for my finger, I know the exact size and where I need to make this next fold, but for
09:26 you at home, your fingers might be smaller or bigger than mine so you will determine
09:31 that.
09:32 But for sake of learning a general size, we're going to make the next crease at the letter
09:36 D in the word United.
09:38 So at this point, you can see the words the United States of America and depending on
09:42 the size you want, you're going to remember the letter at this point for the finger ring
09:46 size.
09:47 So mine is the letter D, so I'm going to take the bill on the left and fold it down at an
09:54 angle here so that when it's folded, it creates a 90 degree angle and this line lines up with
10:01 the letter D right here next to the S. You can see that.
10:06 So this crease is made very tight right here and pinched and you have a 90 degree angle
10:13 and this determines the size.
10:15 So if your finger is bigger than mine, this fold would be made over further to your left
10:20 and if your finger is smaller, the fold would be made further over to the right.
10:26 Now what you're going to do is take this side of the bill and rub your thumb across it.
10:33 This gets it ready to be folded into a cylindrical shape.
10:38 The one here gets placed above on top of the other piece and this area down here gets turned
10:47 into the ring.
10:48 This is kind of rounded out at this point.
10:51 So you're going to have the longer piece facing down and the one facing to the left.
10:58 And a good visual cue here is you want the actual word "one" just to the left of this
11:04 line created there.
11:05 At this point, you're going to pinch here, otherwise if you let go, it would open up.
11:10 Once you have it where you want, you're going to pinch here.
11:14 This long piece is now going to be wrapped around in a spiral fashion around this piece
11:18 until it disappears.
11:20 So it's going to go up first and then crease and then this is going to go down and around
11:29 and through the ring.
11:30 If you're threading the ring here, you're going to crease up top and that's going to
11:36 get folded over again and creased there.
11:39 So no change happens with the ring, just the bill gets folded around.
11:45 At this point, you should be able to see the whole word "one."
11:48 You're going to take it from the left and fold it from the left to your right over so
11:56 that the number "one" is in the center of your fold here.
12:02 This little white border creates a nice little visual cue for you to create a crease along.
12:07 You're going to crease that here nice and tight and open it up.
12:13 And this flap gets fed into that little hole right there.
12:18 So how that happens is it gets tucked down and into.
12:25 If you have any issues with that, if you don't have long fingernails or you have issues getting
12:29 it tucked under, you can take the tip of a pencil or a pen cap and just tuck it under.
12:35 Like I said, if it's a little bit bigger, take it off and move it over a little bit
12:39 to the right.
12:40 If it's a little bit smaller, move it over the other way.
12:42 And if for any reason at the end of the effect you have this on their finger and it doesn't
12:47 quite fit snug on the finger they would like to wear it on, you can offer to, if you have
12:51 time, time permitting, take the finger ring off of their finger, adjust the size.
12:56 That way they can have the finger ring fit perfectly so they can wear it everywhere.
13:00 You want to crease all of these edges here.
13:04 And at this point, your ring is completed and it should fit nice and snug on your fingertip
13:10 but not too tight.
13:11 I wear mine on my left index finger so I know I can get it off and on with ease and there
13:17 is no text or writing of the word "one" at any point on here.
13:23 Once you have this made, if you're planning on doing this more than once to a large group
13:27 of people to make the reset easier, what you can do is fold up about ten of these and take
13:35 a Sharpie marker and you can feed them along the Sharpie.
13:39 And the first one you do, you're going to make sure it gets clipped under the clip there
13:46 and that gets secured so it can't fall down and all the others get stacked on top of it
13:50 like so.
13:52 With the gray part being up, this gets placed into your coat pocket or pants pocket and
13:58 then you can easily reach in your pocket, grab the next one, and from walking to the
14:02 next table or the next group of people, you can reset the gimmick on here and put it back
14:07 on your fingertip.
14:09 So that is the explanation for how to fold the finger ring.
14:20 This is the explanation for how to make the gimmicked five piece that rests and engages
14:26 into the one dollar ring.
14:29 What you are going for is a small five piece that just fits nicely over the ring and is
14:38 going to have two tabs so that it can lock in.
14:41 How you are going to make this is with a five dollar bill and you are going to end up cutting
14:46 off the corner.
14:47 The reason why I have both of these here is this is a new five up top and this is an old
14:52 five.
14:53 The corner of the bill that we will be using and the spectators will be seeing is the upper
14:58 left hand corner, the five right here.
15:01 As you can notice on both of these, there are no differences whatsoever with color or
15:06 design.
15:08 So when it comes to making the corner, you can use either a new or an old.
15:13 So just for the sake of using old five dollar bills today, we will use the old one.
15:18 And you need the other magnet, you need the scissors, you need some scotch tape this time,
15:24 normal tape, and double stick tape again.
15:28 What you are going to do is you also need one of your rings folded up so that you can
15:33 form fit the gaff over the edges of your ring.
15:39 So we are going to put in those creases again just so we know how much we need.
15:51 So just as before, we are going to be using that upper eighth.
15:55 Only this time, last time we used the lower eighth on a one dollar bill.
16:00 This time we are going to be using the upper five.
16:02 You are going to take your scissors and you are going to cut that out.
16:08 And again, since you are destroying a bill just like so, whenever you are done with this,
16:17 you can take the remainder of the five with the hole in it to your bank and they will
16:22 replace this free of charge.
16:25 So you are actually not wasting any money in creating this effect.
16:28 You can place this away for later.
16:30 What you are left with is this piece and what you are going to do is place some creases
16:36 in it to get ready for the magnet.
16:38 So the first crease you are going to be dealing with is along this border on the face side
16:45 of the five.
16:47 This border right here actually does not line up with this border.
16:52 They are on the same direction but this one is a little bit further to the edge.
16:57 So you are going to take the bill and folding it up, you are going to crease so that the
17:03 inside of the crease is along that line.
17:06 That happens like so.
17:12 So when you turn it over, it should be a straight line along the edge of the bill with a little
17:18 bit of white, a lighter green peeking out.
17:22 So when you crease it, it should look like that.
17:26 Now for the other side, you need to determine how wide this should be.
17:31 It should be just bigger than a half inch and luckily you have something that is a half
17:38 inch.
17:39 So you are going to insert that right into there.
17:43 You are going to hold it in place and to get a guide crease going, you are going to fold
17:49 the edge of the bill over and pinch right along the edge of the magnet.
17:55 So when you release here, you can remove this magnet here and you now have a little crease
18:04 along that edge.
18:05 Once you have removed the magnet, you have a nice crease along the edge here.
18:12 You are going to make sure that is a perfectly horizontal crease and you are going to run
18:18 your fingers across that so that when you turn it over, that number 5 is framed right
18:26 in the middle of those two lines.
18:29 Now obviously, the left side here, there is a lot more paper than the right side.
18:36 The amount of paper folded over on the right side is about the equivalent to a fourth,
18:42 a quarter of an inch.
18:43 So you are going to take this paper, the bill, with the scissors and cut it so that there
18:51 is about a fourth of an inch left.
18:55 So they are roughly the same size so that when you turn it over, fold down these edges,
19:05 you get this situation here.
19:09 Now you are going to prepare the inside of the bill for the magnet by covering it with
19:15 double stick tape.
19:17 Just as before with the one dollar corner, you are going to use three pieces of tape.
19:22 You are going to want to go all the way to the edge and toward the bottom and it is completely
19:30 fine if the tape reaches over to the sides because you are going to cut that off just
19:36 as before.
19:37 So it takes three pieces and it is okay again if they overlap a little bit.
19:42 We will not add much to the thickness like so, so that this whole side of the five is
19:53 covered in tape.
19:54 You are going to be placing the magnet in the center of this piece as well.
19:59 Only this time, polarity definitely matters because you want the magnet to be able to
20:05 be picked up by your other gimmick.
20:08 Now with your scissors, you are going to cut off the excess tape like so and the other
20:23 side like so.
20:35 And you are going to get your previously made gimmick out and fold it up and you want to
20:47 rest the five with the non-tape side onto the one.
20:51 You are going to sandwich them together with the back of the five and the back of the one
20:56 together.
20:57 So rest these down like so.
21:01 Just hold them in place.
21:02 You are going to hold the magnet above the pieces.
21:05 If you hold it above the pieces like this and it pushes away like it is doing now, you
21:11 know that it is upside down.
21:13 The polarity is wrong.
21:15 You just turn the magnet directly over.
21:17 When you hold it over now, it wants to attract.
21:21 You can let go of it there.
21:22 That way you know which way the magnet needs to be orientated.
21:26 You can slide this off and get rid of your gimmick for now.
21:31 And now you need to figure out where on the bill and the tape does this magnet need to
21:37 go.
21:38 And the way you are going to do that is with a very bright light source.
21:43 You can peel this back up.
21:45 Just remember which way it goes.
21:46 You are going to rest it approximately in the middle of the piece.
21:51 All of the edges lined up with the edges of the bill.
21:55 And now you are going to turn it over and hold it up to a bright light.
22:01 So you can see here the magnet is a little bit too far to the right.
22:06 So from behind I am going to peel it off and realign it.
22:15 Now you can see it is a little bit high.
22:16 So I am going to peel it off and lower it.
22:21 There is no real good way of doing this except keep peeling it off and keep putting it back
22:27 on until that piece lines up and frames the five.
22:37 So we will try sliding up just a little bit more here.
22:41 There we go.
22:42 Once you have used the light source behind and you have maneuvered the magnet, you want
22:46 the magnet, the eighth inch square, along each side to frame the five as best you can.
22:57 Once you have the magnet in the correct location on the back of the bill with the tape, you
23:02 have already pre-made creases along the right and left edges.
23:05 So you are going to re-engage those very carefully and neatly.
23:10 Only this time, since you have applied tape, these creases should stick.
23:17 Doing both sides here.
23:20 Make sure they line up nice and neat on each side.
23:27 That locks the piece in.
23:28 Now to make your gimmick last longer, have a longer life, we are now going to use the
23:34 scotch regular tape and you are going to peel off a piece that is longer than the gimmick.
23:43 Just place it right over there so it is right in the center.
23:50 And then just as before, you are going to press down so it is nice and flat.
23:57 Then you are going to take your scissors and just like before, cut off the excess tape.
24:07 Being very careful not to cut the actual bill.
24:13 Excellent.
24:19 So now on the face of the bill, you are now going to engage folds above and below the
24:29 magnet using the magnet as a guide.
24:34 Here and here.
24:37 These are going to end up being your tabs.
24:39 To make them fit easier into your bill, you are going to create two different kinds of
24:45 tabs.
24:47 With the shorter end, you are going to create more of a flat top angled edges tab and the
24:54 bottom is going to be more of a pointed tab.
25:00 So in order to do that, you are going to take your scissors, cut and cut at the angles on
25:10 the top.
25:11 You are going to do the same thing on the bottom.
25:13 You are going to be able to come to a point on the bottom.
25:22 This point on the bottom and the point of the flat on the top allows for easy insertion
25:30 into the dollar bill ring.
25:33 You are going to want these tabs to lay flat eventually.
25:36 When you first make it, you are going to need to work them in and because of the nature
25:40 of the tape, they are going to want to stay remain open.
25:43 But if you press them down and run your fingers along the edges here and here repeatedly,
25:53 it will become the nature of the gimmick to stay closed.
25:58 You should take one of your rings now and line it up so that the five lines up with
26:04 the one.
26:05 It is easiest to insert the pointy end first.
26:08 It is going to go right into the base here where there is an opening.
26:13 There is a gap right there.
26:15 That gets pressed flush and then it is pressed up and over and that top tab is folded down
26:24 and into that opening there.
26:29 That is pushed in.
26:30 As you can see right now, it kind of wants to open up.
26:33 That will go away with time.
26:36 The more that you fold this down and the more that you press this, the easier this gets
26:40 to work with.
26:41 It only gets easier to work with the more you use it.
26:46 Once you have all of the tabs and everything worked out, you insert this into your ring,
26:53 the bottom and the top and it lays flat like so.
27:01 Once you have it laying flat and on, you will insert your finger into the ring and wear
27:07 this around.
27:08 That is how you make the top gimmick for the ring.
27:20 This is the explanation for how to make the one to five dollar bill gimmick.
27:25 This is the gimmick that you are going to be making.
27:27 It is the five dollar bill with on the back bottom right hand corner, you are going to
27:32 be adding a one dollar bill piece so that whenever this gimmick is folded up, you can
27:37 change from a one to a five with a flip.
27:41 Also concealed in this gimmick, you are going to be inserting one of the magnets included.
27:46 The magnet goes in between the layers of the one and the five.
27:49 So in order to make this, what you are going to need is some double stick tape, some scissors,
27:55 one of the magnets, you are going to need a one dollar bill and a five dollar bill.
28:00 For the sake of clean edges and not any color discrepancies, you can see the differences
28:06 between a new five dollar bill and an old five dollar bill.
28:10 Since the corner you are going to be dealing with is the bottom right hand corner, where
28:14 this could be purple peeking out in different shades of yellow and green in different areas,
28:19 it is best to use an old five dollar bill but it should be noted that you can do this
28:24 with a new five dollar bill.
28:25 So once you have your old five dollar bill and one, what you are going to do is fold
28:31 both of them identically.
28:32 You are going to be cutting off the lower right hand corner of the back of a one dollar
28:37 bill and that is going to be taped to the back of a five dollar bill with this magnet
28:43 being in the middle of those two layers.
28:46 So to make sure that these all line up, you are going to take the one and fold it into
28:51 eights and make very strong creases.
28:57 These are creating the guidelines for your cut in a moment.
29:01 Make sure these are sharp and precise.
29:09 When you unfold this, you should have two very distinct lines right there along the
29:15 one.
29:16 So this is the corner that you are going to be using.
29:18 What you are going to do is take your scissors and you are going to cut along that line but
29:25 if anything you are going to give yourself some room for error.
29:28 So you are going to want to go outside that line just a little bit so that later if you
29:34 go a little bit over, you can correct that issue.
29:41 If you go too far in, you have to start over with the new bill.
29:44 So you can see here I have been very generous leaving that much extra there and a hairline
29:52 extra on top.
29:53 So that is that piece there and you are going to want to do the same thing with the five
29:57 only no cutting this time.
29:58 So you are going to hold the bill with the back towards you and fold the left side under,
30:06 increase, fold your left side under again, increase and then you are going to fold the
30:17 top of the bill down behind and under, increase.
30:25 Making sure all these creases are nice and tight so that your one piece will fit right
30:32 over the five.
30:36 You can open this up now.
30:40 You can see again you have created a crease along this edge and this edge.
30:47 So that is your target area for your one dollar bill piece.
30:53 Now you are going to apply the magnet to the one dollar corner.
30:57 You are going to apply the magnet now to the face side of the one dollar bill.
31:03 In a moment this is going to be what is seen by them so you want to make sure you are applying
31:06 tape to this side.
31:07 You are going to place three pieces of tape horizontally overlapping each other covering
31:15 the whole face of the one.
31:18 You can be generous with the edges because you can cut off the edges with scissors in
31:24 the end.
31:25 But you want to make sure that the top lines up.
31:33 So this first piece goes all the way to the edge.
31:41 Next one in the middle.
31:54 The last piece down the bottom.
31:59 You have the full face of the one covered with tape but a lot of extra on the edges.
32:05 You can take your scissors and cut that extra off.
32:28 You now made a very sticky corner of a one.
32:31 This is where the magnet comes into play.
32:35 It is now going to be attached to the one.
32:42 So now you are going to set the magnet in the center of the piece here.
32:48 The reason why you are setting it in the center is so that whenever the gimmicked piece of
32:56 the five corner attaches it will be in the center of the bill.
33:01 If this magnet was any bigger or at the edge the piece could peek out over the edge once
33:07 the change has occurred.
33:08 So that gets pressed down in the center there.
33:12 And this piece is going to be taped to the bottom right hand corner of the five dollar
33:18 bill.
33:19 You turn it over and you want to make sure that all of the edges, the bottom edge and
33:25 the right edge here line up perfectly.
33:29 So you take your time.
33:30 I do this edge first, lining up this edge with the corner.
33:35 Just like that.
33:42 And then once you have that edge lined up you can press down.
33:45 Let those line up.
33:48 And then you are going to do the bottom edge the exact same way.
33:57 And once that all lines up you press down as well.
34:00 So that you have made those edges nice and clear and crisp.
34:04 And then you are going to work your way around the magnet by pressing.
34:08 You don't want to actually press down or crease around the magnet or you will get a raised
34:13 square shape.
34:16 So once you press down all these edges, this seals the gimmick magnet in between the two
34:23 layers like that.
34:25 And you are, remember you have extra.
34:29 So how you get rid of the extra now is you are going to refold the five.
34:33 This is taped here.
34:34 I am going to refold the five.
34:39 And when you turn it over the excess bill will be exposed for you to cut off.
34:48 So all you do is very carefully as to not cut the five.
34:53 You are going to cut the excess off.
35:01 Like that.
35:09 And now the other side.
35:19 Like that.
35:22 A little extra piece here.
35:31 So once the extra pieces are cut off, your edges will line up.
35:37 Crease these edges here and press down.
35:40 And from each side it looks good.
35:42 And when you open this up, over here you have the five.
35:48 This is where your gimmick is ready to go.
35:52 And it is stored by folding it across, over, and down.
35:59 That is how you make the one to five dollar gimmick.
36:13 Here is the explanation for a ringer.
36:14 What you are going to do is take the gimmick that you just made, the little piece here
36:21 with the flaps on each end, and you are going to take one of the rings that you made, and
36:28 you are going to have the gimmick loaded onto the ring.
36:34 And I will already be wearing this.
36:35 We are going to go over the handling of the switch and everything.
36:40 So this is on your finger, whichever finger you prefer.
36:43 And you are going to need to ask to borrow a bill.
36:47 But you need to get your gimmick loaded into your hand.
36:51 So you are going to pull out your wallet to start off the effect as if they ask you for
36:55 a ring or you say you are going to fold them a ring, as if you are going to fold the ring
36:58 with your own dollar bill.
37:00 But then you realize that that is not a good idea because then they would not be able to
37:03 keep it.
37:04 But this is all motivated for you to steal out the gimmick which you are going to store
37:08 in your wallet.
37:09 So you have the gimmicked five and one bill inside your wallet.
37:14 And you want to make sure that the one is facing away from yourself and when you have
37:20 the wallet open towards yourself.
37:22 So that the one is facing your audience, facing up.
37:25 So that it is up in the air and towards your audience.
37:28 And that goes into your wallet on the side that has no credit cards.
37:33 If your wallet has credit cards.
37:35 Now if your wallet has credit cards on both sides I should add that you can just keep
37:38 this behind the money.
37:41 So because this is a very strong magnet I have had issues with it erasing information
37:45 before and I do not want you to have the same issues.
37:47 So learn from my mistakes.
37:49 So this is in your wallet with the one side facing towards your spectator.
37:54 So that when it is in your palm and finger palm in a minute and the switch happens it
37:59 does not change immediately into a five.
38:01 That would be bad.
38:03 So the one and five goes into the wallet and you pull out the wallet and you say I am going
38:08 to fold you a ring.
38:09 You are going to get the gimmick from the wallet into finger palm at this point.
38:14 And this is the exposed view.
38:16 Your thumb, your fingertips are going to cover from the front all of this action.
38:21 And your thumb is going to reach in, grab the gimmick and slide it out of the wallet
38:26 and into finger palm at this point.
38:29 So that is the action.
38:31 And this is all occurring as you say well I could use one of my one dollar bills but
38:35 it would be a lot better if we used one of yours.
38:39 So that is, those are the actions.
38:41 Do that one more time.
38:42 Your thumb reaches in, slides it out.
38:45 It goes into finger palm.
38:46 And this is all the exposed view.
38:48 I will show you that once from the front.
38:51 You can see the wallet here.
38:52 Your hand comes across, reaches in, pulls it out and now you have got the gimmick in
38:57 your hand.
38:58 Now in some situations the person that wants to see this folded or something they really
39:03 will not have a one dollar bill on them.
39:05 So it is good that you do have your wallet out because you can still do the effect.
39:08 It is just they can't keep the ring at the end or unless you feel like giving them a
39:11 one dollar bill.
39:12 So here you have the wallet already to go but hopefully they have a dollar bill on them
39:17 and this gets put under your armpit.
39:20 So later you can ditch their bill.
39:22 So this just gets put here as an afterthought and hopefully at this point they hand you
39:27 the bill.
39:28 So at this point you are going to fold this bill to look like this.
39:32 To look like the gimmick in your hand.
39:35 The way I do it is you take from the right to the left.
39:38 You fold the bill in half across here and then you crease and you take the right again
39:45 only this time you fold behind and crease.
39:50 You take the top and fold behind and crease with all your fingertips.
39:55 And while this is going on keep in mind you have this in finger palm but the spectator
40:00 shouldn't be looking for any magic yet.
40:04 And this is the switch that occurs.
40:06 So you can see there is very little discrepancy between the two.
40:10 Since you have your gimmick palmed in finger palm here the switch is going to occur behind
40:15 your fingertips.
40:16 I'll show you once performance wise it looks like you crease it and you're done and now
40:21 you've had it switched out for the five.
40:23 What that looks like from behind you can see here.
40:27 Now you're going to do the switch of their one for your five and one.
40:33 This occurs as you're creasing the edges you want to put one more good last crease in it.
40:37 So you're going to place their one directly over yours and kind of mind the action of
40:43 creasing and your fingertips are curled in at this point and just by placing a slight
40:48 amount of pressure with your thumb here on this bill and opening your five becomes exposed
40:55 and your fingertips from the left can grab that five and pull it out and now you've switched
41:02 their one for your one.
41:04 And this is the switch that occurs so I'll show you that one more time.
41:07 You have yours here, you folded theirs up and all of this folding of their one occurs
41:11 while you're talking about origami or the ring that you're about to fold them or whatever
41:15 your presentation includes.
41:17 This all just goes unnoticed to them as if you're preparing the one for the folds of
41:22 the dollar bill ring.
41:23 So you go here, it gets placed over the five, mind the action of squeezing, open your hand,
41:30 that five comes out, you grab the pieces, this goes now into finger palm and you've
41:35 done the switch.
41:37 Now this is important to note that at this point in the effect it's still not an effect.
41:41 You are folding them a ring so there's no point for the spectator or your audience to
41:46 be looking for a magic move yet even though you're way ahead of them.
41:50 They're just expecting you to be folding money which is very boring to watch so they shouldn't
41:54 be on the edge of their seat yet.
41:57 So at this point you have their one here in your hand and your gimmick here in your fingertips
42:02 and you need to get rid of their one dollar bill.
42:04 And how you're going to do that is at this point in talking to them just subliminally
42:08 or unnoticeably you notice that you still have your wallet under your armpit and that
42:13 needs to get put away for the effect.
42:14 So you're going to take the wallet out of your armpit and you're going to add on the
42:20 finger palm piece and all of this is going to go into your back pocket at this point.
42:26 It's just there's no real move there.
42:29 It's just you're grabbing your wallet with the piece and everything goes in your back
42:33 pocket for later.
42:34 At this point you're left pretty clean because it still looks like their one is here and
42:41 your five is here.
42:43 And at this point you can show both hands very cleanly empty and nothing has yet occurred
42:48 to the spectator.
42:49 In the spectator's mind you still have done no magic here.
42:53 At this point you're way far ahead because everything you need to accomplish the effect
42:57 is out in front of them and you're not left palming anything.
43:01 What you're going to do is make sure that you place your five onto their finger which
43:06 is actually the one dollar bill and to control the situation which I'll show in a moment
43:11 you're going to make sure that your left hand is under their hand so that they can't shake
43:17 or move or anything of that nature.
43:19 You tell them to be careful with your five dollar bill ring because it's a little bit
43:22 more expensive than the one you're about to fold for them.
43:26 This gets placed into finger palm again for the change to occur and all that's really
43:31 going to happen is in the slapping motion you're going to be turning over this bill
43:36 which changes this into a five and the magnet will pick up the five piece.
43:41 Now if you were to directly hit it just like this you can kind of hear, I'll get the mic
43:46 so you can hear this, you can hear a slap or a smack effect.
43:51 Now this is very subtle and if the people are listening very closely you might detect
43:58 a hint of a metal for some reason but that's why you have it in finger palm because having
44:05 the dollar bill in finger palm it's a little bit recessed into your pinky and index finger.
44:11 So you can see that the dollar bill is actually a little bit recessed into your hand so that
44:17 the first points of contact onto the spectator's hand are the pinky and the index finger not
44:22 actually the one dollar bill.
44:25 So let's say this is their hand here.
44:28 You're going to want to slap this down but before you do you want to make sure that this
44:32 bill in your finger palm is orientated in a way that when this contacts the ring and
44:39 it's laying flat now on the ring the five is staring them into the face.
44:43 You don't want this effect to be confused at all by the bill especially being faced
44:48 away from them they won't notice any changes occurred until they move their hand.
44:53 So all these angles are bad except for this one.
44:56 So if I was performing for the camera right now I would make sure that the one is actually
45:00 upside down to them at this point so that whenever the bill smacks down the five is
45:07 staring you in the face.
45:09 So that is how you want to have it orientated and you take it and you're going to just smack
45:14 down in one action like this and whenever you remove your hand they will immediately
45:19 see the first effect that occurs in their mind is that this one has now become a five.
45:25 Your hand will obviously be under their hand at this point so they don't freak out and
45:29 shake their hand but don't let this, don't let them realize this immediately because
45:34 it kind of tips the method just a little bit.
45:36 So that's why when you're doing this you want to make sure your hand is under their hand
45:40 and again we'll show you that in a minute with the hand that way you have control of
45:43 their situation but they see the five and immediately once that registers with them
45:49 you're going to pick up the five straight up into the air and it's important that it
45:53 goes straight up that way the tabs are disengaged from the one dollar bill ring.
45:57 If for any reason you pick up at an angle there's a chance that the gimmick could be
46:01 left behind and now all you've done is you've changed a one into a five which is a completely
46:06 different effect.
46:07 So instead of picking it towards yourself or away from yourself or side to side you
46:11 want to make sure it goes straight up in the air otherwise the magnet's piece tabs could
46:16 be stayed locked, could remain locked into the ring.
46:20 So this just gets pulled straight up in the air and now you've changed it right here.
46:26 This piece is now engaged to the magnet on the gimmick and everything makes sense to
46:31 the spectator.
46:32 To delay the moment for them just a little bit you pick this up and open it, let's say
46:37 there's a hand here, you open this here and you slowly pull away from their fingertip
46:42 to kind of symbolize a curtain raising, rising above the show.
46:48 This is the final piece.
46:50 It's a lot of magic that happens in one second so you don't want their brain to go on overload.
46:55 They see a five here and a one here, this smacks, this is the first effect, you let
47:01 that register for a few seconds, you pull this off and fully let everyone understand
47:05 what's going on and it just gets pulled away as the one is revealed.
47:11 And they're left with the one on their hand.
47:12 Now immediately they, I have never had this happen, no one's ever wanted to examine the
47:18 five dollar bill because everything in the magic effect and everything that the heat
47:22 is on is on their finger and they can examine this all they want, this is theirs to keep
47:27 and just for a nice little flash if you feel like flashing this just by covering the corner
47:32 with your fingertips you get a nice subtle convincing flash of the five dollar bill.
47:38 I'll show you that again here, you just can turn that over any which way that's comfortable
47:42 for you and all you're doing is concealing the magnet and the one dollar bill corner
47:47 there and handling your five and then whenever you're ready to put it away you're going to
47:52 want to fold it in half with the back being on the inside concealing the gimmick completely
47:58 so that you can show it on all sides and you say to the spectator I'm going to hold on
48:02 to my five and now you can hold on to your one dollar bill that you gave me that's now
48:06 the ring.
48:07 And I say I'll keep my five dollar bill and you can keep your one dollar bill like that.
48:13 So that is the explanation to ringer.
48:15 Here is the explanation for how to change the five dollar ring into the one dollar ring
48:27 on their hand.
48:28 So we have a hand here and you ask them to hold out their hand, at this point you've
48:31 already done the switch and their one dollar bill is in your pocket with your wallet and
48:36 you have yours out and you're going to place your five on their finger, on the finger that
48:41 it fits on easiest.
48:42 Right here this hand, the middle finger is the easiest and it's centered for the sake
48:47 of the trick but if it's a fatter finger or a skinnier finger you might have to adjust
48:51 accordingly.
48:52 And then your left hand is going to be placed under theirs so that their hand is resting
48:56 on yours.
48:58 This is so that they have minimal movement with their hand and they can't really flail
49:02 around that much.
49:03 You're going to take the one now at this point and get it adjusted so that when the color
49:08 change occurs the five is staring them in the face.
49:11 And since the change occurs side to side you actually want the one facing you and it'll
49:17 be upside down to them just for a moment.
49:19 And at this point it's important to note that the five is also facing them so at the end
49:23 everything is clear and that'll be a one.
49:25 So here you put this in a deep finger palm and you're going to turn it over and slap.
49:30 At this point when you remove your hand this is the first color change to them, they see
49:34 the five.
49:36 This is the point where they could move and where the magnet would still be stuck but
49:39 your hand is here so that can't occur.
49:42 And then once that's visibly registered to them you're going to pick up the gimmick straight
49:47 up into the air which disengages the gaff and you can now remove your hand from theirs.
49:52 And you're going to open this up like this revealing the five to them but blocking the
49:58 view of the one.
49:59 And once this is registered you're going to visibly lift this up as if you're raising
50:04 a curtain away from the one dollar bill here and let everything register in this frame
50:10 here so that they realize that now this is the ring and this is your five.
50:13 At this point you can do the flash, fold, put away, but now the finger ring is on their
50:19 finger.
50:20 And that's the explanation for how to do the slap on the person's hand.
50:49 Here's how to do the color change from the one dollar ring to the five, or from the,
51:05 hold on, sorry.
51:06 The movement that their hand can move during the effect.
51:09 Thank you.
51:15 To tip the method right off the bat.
51:19 You sure wouldn't want to see this.
51:24 In the trailer.
51:25 Yeah.
51:26 So let's take your hand like this and we slap.
51:30 You see here.
51:31 Oh, now there's my five and you're left with your ring.
51:35 Wow, that was hot.
51:37 That was hot.
51:38 That was nice.
51:39 Thank you.
51:40 How you do that?
51:41 I'm talking to y'all.
51:42 That was nice.
51:43 Thank you.
51:44 How you do that?
51:45 Oh.
51:45 - Dude, I-- - Yo. (laughs)
