00:29 - The lion is a muscular, deep-chested cat
00:34 with a short, rounded head.
00:36 Of the living felid species,
00:45 the lion is rivaled only by the tiger in length,
00:48 weight, and height at the shoulder.

00:52 In Africa, the range of the lion originally spanned
01:11 most of the central rainforest zone and the Sahara Desert.

01:17 The Cape buffalo is the typical subspecies
01:26 and the largest one found in Southern and East Africa.
01:29 It is widely regarded as one of the most dangerous animals
01:41 on the African continent.

01:46 And according to some estimates, it gores, tramples,
01:53 and kills over 200 people every year.
01:56 Lions always attack in a pack, never individually.

02:13 A lone lion would stand little chance
02:20 against a fully-grown adult Cape buffalo
02:23 which weighs half a ton, has a super powerful kick and horns
02:27 which can pierce the lion's skin and puncture vital organs.
02:38 Lions therefore generally go for the old,
02:40 sick adults or calves.
02:42 Even if they are running away instead of fighting,
02:57 the buffalo are hard to kill.
02:59 (upbeat music)
03:02 Typically, it's taking a good-sized lion pride
03:21 to take them down.
03:29 That isn't even taking into account
03:31 what the buffalo can do to lions.
03:33 The buffalo's horns won't kill a lion outright,
03:49 but they're so powerful that they can easily fling lions
03:52 into the air.
03:54 (upbeat music)
03:56 Either outcome will cause a significant amount of damage
04:04 in addition to the wound caused by the horn.
04:07 There have been reports of single lions
04:22 killing full-grown buffalo,
04:24 but most prides fail to kill the adults.
04:27 One lion attempting it would almost certainly be go red
04:41 and die as a result of the wound.

04:45 The male Cape buffaloes are known for their bad temper.
04:56 When a calf was set upon by three or four lions,
05:10 then the entire herd of buffalo grouped and charged them.
05:13 The lions had to retreat.
05:24 A couple of male lions did try another attempt,
05:35 but had to retreat as well.
05:37 (upbeat music)
05:40 In some cases, the majority of the lions were able to flee,
05:53 but one unfortunate lion was cornered.
06:06 After that, things go downhill for the lion.
06:09 It's being cornered by a many angry male Cape buffaloes
06:25 who are tossing it up into the air,
06:27 butting and kicking it.
06:28 (upbeat music)
06:31 In such an encounter, lions are occasionally killed.

06:59 One of the most common places for one animal
07:02 to attack another is a watering hole.
07:04 Because most animals require water,
07:16 this is an ideal location for predators to wait
07:19 and wait for their prey to come to them
07:20 when they are hungry.
07:22 (upbeat music)
07:24 Crocodiles and other large water dwelling animals
07:37 will swoop down and grab animals that lean down to drink.

07:43 (upbeat music)
07:46 They'll kill and eat almost anything
07:57 they can get their hands on,
07:58 including fish, deer, and buffalo.
08:01 They tear chunks off with their teeth and swallow them whole.
08:11 (upbeat music)
08:14 Buffaloes are the most common prey of hyenas.
08:38 (upbeat music)
08:40 With their powerful jaws, they can tear buffalo bones,
08:57 allowing them to break bones that even a lion couldn't.
09:07 Because calves' defenses are still weak,
09:10 hyenas usually prey on them.
09:12 Adult buffalo will usually come to help,
09:23 so they must kill the calf quickly.
09:35 Adult buffalo, particularly aggressive buffalo,
09:38 are extremely dangerous and can kill
09:40 or injure a large number of hyenas.
09:42 If the hyenas are starving,
09:54 they will attack the adult buffalo as well.
10:03 (upbeat music)
10:06 They will pursue the buffalo
10:08 until it becomes exhausted and falls down.
10:11 The hyenas would then attack one by one, tearing it apart.
