00:00 Let's talk Trey Lance.
00:02 Word is that he's back working with Jeff Christensen right now.
00:05 He was at tight end you a few weeks ago.
00:07 Now he's back doing work that matters, working with his independent throwing coach, who's
00:12 not really associated with the 49ers.
00:14 They have their own guys like John Becker.
00:18 Anyway, guys who've had who've worked with Trey Lance in the past and haven't really
00:23 gotten the results that were needed.
00:26 Apparently, Jeff Christensen is getting those results.
00:28 He taught Jimmy Garoppolo how to throw in high school and he works with Patrick Mahomes
00:33 is good.
00:34 I'm encouraged to know that Pat that Lance went back before training camp because it
00:38 seemed like it made a big difference for him before OTAs and mini camp.
00:41 And he needs as many.
00:43 I mean, Tom Brady would consistently do these touch ups in the offseason.
00:47 So I'm good.
00:48 I'm glad to know that Trey Lance is committed.
00:49 It's not just like an Instagram opportunity.
00:52 You know what I mean?
00:53 Yeah, once.
00:54 Yeah.
00:55 The number one vibe I get from Trey Lance is that he wants to be good.
00:58 He wants to be great.
01:00 And it's not something I get from Sam Donald.
01:02 I get it from Brock Purdy and I get it from Trey Lance.
01:05 And so that's refreshing to me.
01:06 And, you know, he's going into year three.
01:09 First year, he was kind of like a little brother trying not to step on any toes with Jimmy
01:13 there.
01:14 Second year, he was kind of appointed, but not ready.
01:17 Third year, he's fighting ways way back from from injury.
01:19 He's hearing all the talk.
01:20 He's working his ass off.
01:22 He looks better, according to everybody who's seen him and including myself.
01:27 He looks just more confident, looks more tight with his mechanics.
01:31 He just looks like he's improving and he wants to be great.
01:33 He's probably hearing all the talk, hopefully as a chip on his shoulder.
01:36 I'm excited to see what he can do, at least in preseason.
01:40 I think there are a lot of similarities between a lot of people who want to compare Sam Donald
01:44 to Alex Smith.
01:46 But I want to compare Trey Lance to Alex Smith, because Trey Lance was drafted when he was
01:50 20.
01:51 He was very young, not immature, but just very young and inexperienced.
01:57 And I think his career arc, at least so far, has been a lot like Alex Smith, you know,
02:02 little too young to play at first, a little overwhelmed, injured, scapegoated and really
02:11 written off by his own fan base, did not have instant success, but ended up being a Pro
02:17 Bowl quarterback elsewhere.
02:20 So that could be Trey Lance.
02:22 And you heard that Alex Smith was talking to NBC Sports Bay Area this weekend and gave
02:28 him a big vote of confidence, saying very talented guy, really young when he got here
02:32 with 23.
02:33 Yeah, I wouldn't read him off.
02:35 Yeah, he was complimentary of all the quarterbacks, says that they have probably underrated quarterback
02:40 room, the whole quarterback room thing.
02:42 That's new.
02:43 That's 2023 talk right there.
02:44 The quarterback room.
02:45 You never really heard that before this year.
02:48 Yeah, Alex Smith was complimentary of all of me actually compared Darnold to himself,
02:53 you know, and I understand that.
02:54 I think Darnold is definitely going to play better this year than he ever has when he
02:57 plays.
02:58 But I still think he's Sam Darnold.
03:01 I just want to see.
03:02 I just really want to see it like again.
03:04 I think this might be the last opportunity we have to see what Trey Lance can become.
03:08 And so I just want to see it, man, like start on week one that Brock pretty fully recover
03:13 and let's see what Trey can do because he seems to really want to be great and they've
03:19 invested a lot in him.
03:20 And if they don't do it now, when the hell are they going to do it?
03:23 Yeah, agree.
03:25 OK, let's get a couple more super chats and then we'll start comparing the nightish other
03:29 teams.
03:30 Francisco, which my home's coaches Lance working with Jeff Christensen.
03:34 Google seems to know what he's doing.
03:37 And one thing I noticed that people will see once training camp starts because fans will
03:41 be there is a much more controlled, quicker stroke on the short throws.
03:48 I think one thing that stood out when he was in preseason as a rookie, the slants is the
03:52 whole really hard.
03:54 And there were a lot of drops for Trey.
03:55 But a lot of people like, well, yeah, but you don't throw the most catchable ball.
03:59 I feel like his short throws are much more catchable now.
04:03 And that's something I saw consistently throughout his mini camp.
04:05 That'd be something to look for, because that's a big, a big, easy way he can improve, I would
04:09 think.
04:10 Yeah, and another thing I want to I don't think I spoke to you about this yet, but watching
04:14 the quarterback, Mariota was talking about how he was drafted so high that he felt like
04:21 when he was playing that he had to make these incredible plays.
04:25 Right.
04:26 He had to come in and just do these amazing things.
04:28 And last year, Trey Lance got a kickback and watch Brock Purdy Dinkin dunk his way to eight
04:33 wins in a row.
04:35 And I'm wondering, Trey Lance is kind of figured out, oh, that's all I got to do.
04:38 I just got to hit my open guy and let him do the work for me, you know, so maybe that's
04:42 going to be an improvement we'll see from him as well.
04:44 And I hope so.
04:45 Yeah.
04:46 Joshua Wyatt says, if Trey Lance doesn't play this year, how could you pick up his fifth
04:49 year option?
04:51 So why is Trey still here?
04:52 None of this makes sense.
04:53 That's a good point.
04:54 Niners lack conviction and they have for seven years institutional failure.
04:57 Yeah.
04:58 Why is he still here?
04:59 Because the Niners lack conviction.
05:00 And what's funny is that John Lynch always uses that term wrong.
05:03 And anyways, I'm so convicted.
05:04 No, you're not.
05:05 You are not under arrest.
05:07 You're not convicted.
05:08 You're not under investigation.
05:09 It's conviction and you don't have it at the quarterback position.
05:12 It's true.
05:13 If you're trying to decide whether or not Trey Lance should be here for the fifth year
05:18 option, you need to play him at some point.
05:20 And I think the 49ers saw them.
05:23 They went through four quarterbacks last year, five, if you count CMC.
05:26 Right.
05:27 So, I mean, they probably know themselves that they're going to need some quarterbacks
05:30 this year outside of one.
05:32 I just think it's so funny that they went through all their quarterbacks and they're
05:34 like, should we improve our offensive line or get more quarterback feet, be get more.
05:42 It's cheaper.
05:43 Yeah.
05:44 Jaleel says, what is the play caller series on?
05:46 It's on what?
05:47 Coach Spotify.
05:48 Oh, yeah.
05:49 I haven't listened to all of them yet, but.
05:52 Man, Mike McDaniel is the most interesting person on that show.
05:56 He really my opinion is that he really resents Kyle Shanahan resents the hell out of.
06:02 I got to watch.
06:03 I haven't heard yet.
06:04 I got to listen to it.
06:05 Yeah.
06:06 Yeah.
06:07 I get the feeling that Mike McDaniel thinks he's way smarter than Kyle.
06:11 I get the feeling he thinks he's way smarter than Kyle and that Kyle kind of took advantage
06:16 of like, look, I'm the chosen one.
06:19 Mike Shanahan's my dad.
06:21 Mike Shanahan's the head coach of this Washington team.
06:23 He'll hire you.
06:24 So you're going to have to make me look good.
06:26 You're going to have to let me copy off your homework.
06:28 You're going to let me have to copy off your tests.
06:30 You're going to have to make me look like I'm a freaking genius, even though I'm not.
06:35 And you went to Yale.
06:36 And I think Mike McDaniel went along with that for a long time.
06:39 And now he's a head coach of a different team.
06:41 And he's really not hiding how he feels about Kyle.
06:44 I think maybe Mike is being ungrateful.
06:48 Maybe Kyle is right.
06:49 Maybe Mike is wrong.
06:50 I don't know.
06:51 Decide for yourself.
06:52 It's very interesting.
06:53 I got to listen to it now.
06:54 You got me hype.
06:56 Mike drops with Monsa says Casey cheese wide receivers.
06:59 QBs tight ends get together in offseason work on scheme before OTAs and camp.
07:03 They have two Super Bowls and work more than SF hubris of Kyle is infectious.
07:08 Do you think Kyle is on the hot seat?
07:10 And that's why they're pushing Brock?
07:12 No, no.
07:14 I think Kyle has no pressure from Jed York.
07:16 And that's really probably the biggest problem with the 49ers.
07:19 Maybe Kyle with a more with Eddie D. Maybe it would work.
07:22 But Kyle with Jed, I think he just walks all over Jed.
07:25 He brags in front of Jed's face to fans like, yeah, this guy's never told me what to do
07:28 once in seven years.
07:30 OK, great.
07:33 Yeah.
07:34 Super.
07:35 It is frustrating having a quarterback be QB one appointed QB one and he's not healthy
07:41 because like Mike drops says here in that video, you see that, you know, Patrick Mahomes
07:47 is working with his team off, you know, outside of Kansas City stuff.
07:51 He's he's organizing himself and they're putting in work because they know he's QB one.
07:56 I just want the 49ers to go into an offseason knowing who's QB one, but also that guy being
08:00 healthy.
08:01 Right.
08:02 When was the last time that was the last time the Niners had a healthy quarterback going
08:07 into a season?
08:08 Jimmy, 2020, 2020, 2020.
08:09 That didn't go so well.
08:10 That season didn't go so well at all.
08:11 Yeah.
08:12 Yeah.
08:13 Anyway.
08:14 All right.
08:15 One more.
08:16 Bill Kennedy says any chance the Niners will use both Brock and Trey in the same game,
08:27 depending on the situation.
08:28 Remember Red Hickey system?
08:29 I remember 2021 with Kyle was trying to do that with.
08:33 Honestly, I could see Kyle doing.
08:36 I could see him.
08:37 I could see him.
08:38 I just don't want him to.
08:39 I just think it's it's like saying, oh, it's like saying Trey can't do this, but he can't
08:44 play quarterback, but we can throw him in for some trick play.
08:47 Yeah, we can make him taste some hill like, no, he's not really that.
08:51 Yeah.
08:54 (upbeat music)
