00:21 The first edition of Business Icon Awards 2022
00:25 was organized by Outlook Business Spotlight on 25th November 2022
00:30 at a gala ceremony in Hyderabad.
00:32 An initiative to recognize and celebrate excellence in business innovation,
00:36 creativity and leadership.
00:39 The awards were appropriately themed India Inc. The Next Big Leader.
00:44 It's been a long journey for me today.
00:47 Trust me, I drove all the way from Roorkee into Delhi
00:51 and flew from Delhi to here and then I again dashed down to here.
00:57 That reflects how important I felt was to come and receive this award from
01:01 Outlook Business Magazine.
01:04 I turned an entrepreneur when I turned 40.
01:08 People said it's too late. I said never too late. There are other people who are
01:11 role models who turned entrepreneurs even at 60.
01:14 So never think it's late. Go back home. Start thinking about it.
01:18 Saying what am I here for? Purpose of life is what I keep asking people.
01:24 Why am I here for? And there's this very famous poem
01:28 from Linda Hill. It's called The Dash. I know some of you have read.
01:34 When we start disappearing from the world, finally what happens is there's a
01:37 tombstone. And the tombstone has a name, date of
01:41 birth, date of death and there's a dash in
01:44 between. If you look at whatever is written on the
01:47 tombstone is not under your control. You don't get named. You don't know date
01:52 of birth. You don't control the date of birth. You
01:54 don't get the date of disappearance. What you control is the dash. That's your
01:59 contribution. So go home and think about being an
02:02 entrepreneur. Thank you very much.
02:05 Next was a panel discussion titled Creating Sustainable Businesses,
02:11 A Case for ESG. So my first question is that
02:15 do you think that ESG is perhaps not a choice anymore?
02:19 It's a necessity? Various esteemed speakers deliberated on the topic
02:25 which was moderated by Outlook's business editor Suchetna Ray.
02:30 For her path-breaking performance in the recent Telugu blockbuster
02:33 Sita Ramam, actress Mrunal Thakur was felicitated at the event.
02:37 She also had a fireside chat with Outlook's first woman editor
02:41 Chinkee Sinha. Who's a heroine in Bollywood because you've made
02:46 a lot of statements about you know how you had a broad face,
02:50 how you know body shaming happens. So who is a heroine and
02:53 has anything changed kind of? First of all I'm a big fan of yours. I've
02:57 watched multiple videos and TED talk. Oh! And you're very inspiring.
03:03 So who is the perfect heroine? Yeah. That's the question that's been
03:09 bothering me ever since I entered this industry.
03:12 What kept bothering me was also what is a hit film? Yeah.
03:19 Body shaming, trust me I got body shamed two days ago.
03:23 I went home and I ended up eating one packet of chips
03:29 and then went to the gym and I worked out for an hour and a half.
03:33 I'm in year for that. Yeah and today I think I want to
03:37 to be the real me. I want to be myself and I want to promote that
03:42 to the youth out there because I don't want to set
03:46 standards or aims and goals where people end up
03:50 on you know being in on a crash diet. For me nothing is perfect. Like
03:57 sometimes even when it comes to acting, when it comes to playing a character,
04:02 to be raw, to be vulnerable, to be unaware of who you are itself makes you
04:07 the best. So I think according to me the best was Smita Patil.
04:13 She was way ahead of her time and we really miss her. I wish she was here
04:17 today. I'm sure she would be rocking and be the number one heroine even today.
04:21 She's my Meryl. Who is an Indian woman that you want to play?
04:24 I mean it's difficult to know now because you know there's so much of this
04:29 Bollywood also is perpetuating the film industry for instance like these fake
04:33 beauty standards or age thing you know and there's a there's a
04:37 lot of that trolling that happens. Like look at Madhuri Dixit or even you like
04:41 two days ago you were wearing this black dress and
04:43 you completely got trolled. How do you like have these mechanisms to kind of
04:47 cope with it and what is this Indian woman? You know the
04:51 team, my family they're always there. They're
04:54 told and they know how hard I work and we kind of get used to it that
04:59 yes I will be body shamed no matter what. But an answer to that thing somebody, a
05:05 woman only mentioned about my love handles popping and I just said that
05:10 I post on my handle what I love and I love my love handles so what's the
05:14 matter with you? You should appreciate that.
05:17 But having said that, people have a job to do. You just have to do your job.
05:22 It must be really really difficult because you know it just
05:26 affects you. So I mean there's a lot of people who have
05:29 kind of spoken about it and has anything changed though?
05:32 Like is it changing do you think? From where we sit we don't
05:36 see much change you know. There's still that whole no?
05:40 There's still a lot of changes that needs to be made
05:43 but having said that I just in my head say this person is not doing well.
05:48 Let's give that person some time to heal because it's very
05:51 easy to troll someone sitting on social networking sites. Rather I
05:55 in fact went back to the accounts who trolled me and the
05:58 same lady who trolled me did not
06:03 wear a blouse because she was scared about it. She wore a t-shirt and a sari which
06:07 was not draped right. I could have said nasty things but
06:12 that's not me. In fact I felt like she looked beautiful.
06:15 I think I hope you're watching this. I think you look beautiful
06:18 and this one comment can really ruin someone's
06:22 mental state of mind. You know the state of mind.
06:27 Anyway the world is going through so many things. The COVID
06:30 happened, there's war happening and there's a lot of things that's
06:34 happening. So I think my agenda and my aim every day is
06:38 to make at least 10 people happy or smile. Trust me it's the most
06:41 difficult thing. And is there still like a shelf life to
06:45 heroines you know as they used to have or things have changed or how do you
06:49 like you've you entered the industry very young in at 20 I suppose right
06:53 and then it's been like quite a journey and
06:57 you know now you are kind of like 10 years maybe and then
07:00 do you think there is still that tag or do you think things have changed or are
07:04 changing? Is there things are changing and I'm really
07:07 happy it's you audience because of you all things are changing.
07:11 It's because you guys demand women-centric films. There have been
07:14 you know and earlier it was a shelf life of an actress who may be from say
07:19 18 years old to 27, 30 that's it and then she would get
07:24 a mother's role or you know a sister-in-law's role.
07:27 But I also get disappointed when actresses who are
07:31 younger than the hero end up doing the role of
07:34 you know their mother. Things are changing but
07:38 it hasn't changed completely. OTT platforms have given platforms for women
07:43 out there to be themselves. You know they don't
07:46 need to look younger, they don't need to look older, they just
07:49 can be themselves. So I think audience plays an important role
07:54 because you know they demand content. We have to
07:59 yeah it's pretty much. I mean it's true that I mean
08:02 a lot of Bollywood looks the same now because everybody has the same kind of
08:05 stylist everything. So there must be something different
08:08 right? So let's say somebody like you how would you make that
08:12 change or you know anything that because everybody is kind of like in the
08:18 same direction now. So somebody as fresh who comes in and yeah.
08:22 I think we should I should just stick to the roots
08:25 and there are I'm sure you guys would agree with me
08:30 there are a lot of voices in the background.
08:34 Yeah. Do this it will work, do that it will work.
08:37 Listen to them and see if it works out. If it doesn't
08:40 be authentic. I think one of the reasons why everybody
08:44 has you know aced in whatever field they belong to is because
08:48 they were themselves, they were authentic. They are
08:51 and I think whatever is authentic is rare. Yeah. I think that's
08:54 that's the problem because today we live in a 24-hour
08:57 you know social media bubble. Yeah. Everyone wants to copy, everyone wants to
09:03 be a part of the trend but what what if you be the trendsetter and I
09:07 think with me I feel like I need to be true to
09:11 myself, be authentic and rare. It's my dream to be known as a
09:15 versatile actress. And my last question is what is that
09:18 dream role that you would want to do? Anything like and your favorite
09:22 actor, somebody or maybe a writer or something you know that
09:26 that you want the story that you would like to do or maybe write or something.
09:29 You know when I was little I used to I used to get very excited when on DD
09:35 National when there was you know Kalpana Chawla's interview or
09:39 anything about her about the space and you know I would I
09:43 would really get so excited. I wanted to be an astronaut one day
09:47 but I realized there's a lot of hard work that needs to be done. But acting is
09:50 also a lot of hard work. Yes but you know I have a role model to
09:55 to study, to follow and that's one dream role that I want to do.
10:01 Oh my god what a journey that would have been. Like sometimes I sit in an
10:04 aircraft and I look down and I'm like wow I'm in an aircraft. Imagine what it
10:09 would be when I'm like in the space. So would you like to do like her like
10:13 character on screen or something? Have you always
10:16 have you ever thought about that or something? Any one
10:19 character? Yes you know I feel like circus is kind of disappeared. Yeah. And
10:26 I don't know but not I used to not get happy when there were animals
10:32 involved. Only when there was a show. Now they have been banned. Yeah yeah but there
10:36 were shows you know when they're the the yeah it was so beautiful and I would
10:41 like to do something, something period, something vintage
10:46 that would also have our Indian culture and there's a lot of costume drama.
10:52 Yeah and I would love to work with Rajamouli sir. Thank you and
10:55 we'll come out with a circus issue and we'll ask you to curate it for us also.
