PBBM sends strong warning vs. those involved in agricultural smuggling, hoarding
Transcript
00:00 Smuggling has been the primary cause of the many problems still plaguing the
00:04 agriculture sector. Take it out of the equation and we'd most probably have a
00:08 sector that is flourishing which is something that the DA wants to achieve
00:12 by conducting more surprise inspections of questionable warehouses.
00:17 Claizel Pardilla supplies the details.

01:06 This is the warning of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. against people involved in
01:12 agricultural smuggling and hoarding which he stated in his second State of
01:17 the Nation address last night. Besides not paying taxes at all and depriving
01:23 government of Jews revenues, smugglers also compete with local farmers and put
01:29 consumers at a huge disadvantage with higher prices. The Department of
01:34 Agriculture is now inspecting the warehouses and storage facilities
01:39 containing agricultural products.

02:03 four big warehouses storing smuggled meat, onions and sugar. Illegal products
02:09 are allegedly supplied not only in Luzon but also in the Visayas and Mindanao.

02:37 According to the Sugar Regulatory Administration, approximately 10 million
02:43 kilos of smuggled sugar have been confiscated this year. That is why SRA
02:48 supports the President's campaign against smuggling. Earlier the President
02:52 ordered the National Bureau of Investigation and the Department of
02:56 Justice to investigate the smuggling of agricultural products.

03:26 Violation of anti-agricultural smuggling law will merit a lifetime
03:30 imprisonment and a fine twice the fair value of the smuggled product. But the
03:35 President's sister Senator Amy Marcos pointed enforcement of the law is needed
03:40 to make smugglers accountable.

04:03 The anti-agricultural smuggling law should also be amended, which the
04:08 President pleaded for in his SONA.
04:10 It can be improved. We can broaden the scope of the offenses. We can include
04:16 government employees and other private individuals who are not necessarily
04:22 covered by the existing law. We can also raise the penalties.
