00:00 A lot of people don't know what animal he is.
00:02 (cat meows)
00:03 My name's Tonka and this is Pugsley's story for GeoBeats.
00:06 (cat meows)
00:07 The shelter found Pugsley in a dog hoarding situation.
00:11 He was the only cat there.
00:12 (cat meows)
00:15 He's covered in scars and had a ton of infections
00:17 at the time.
00:18 They think he's about four years old.
00:20 (cat meows)
00:21 I am a cat photographer and I do a lot of work with shelters.
00:25 I look for cats who have been there for a long time
00:28 or cats that don't really have great pictures of them.
00:31 (cat meows)
00:32 In his description it said he's never going
00:35 to photograph well and they're struggling
00:37 to photograph him for his profile.
00:39 (cat meows)
00:40 And so I was like, all right,
00:41 I wanna see if I can photograph him.
00:42 But when I met him, I just fell in love instantly.
00:45 I was surprised how big he was.
00:47 This lady was carrying him.
00:48 He covered her entire arms.
00:50 (cat meows)
00:51 Normally when you put a cat in a new room,
00:52 they explore and they don't really care about you.
00:54 But that wasn't him.
00:55 He came up to us and just immediately wanted
00:57 all of the love and attention and affection
01:00 that we could possibly give him.
01:01 (cat meows)
01:02 And then instead of photographing him,
01:04 I decided to foster him while he was waiting
01:07 for some medical treatment.
01:09 Say hello.
01:10 When I took him home, he would not get out of my lap
01:12 and I was like, there's no way I can send him back.
01:15 Rescue cats just look at you a certain way.
01:17 They're so grateful and that's what you can see in his eyes.
01:20 And then I just ended up adopting him.
01:22 I've never met a cat like him before.
01:25 (upbeat music)
01:28 He was an orange cat when I got him.
01:30 And then he turned black.
01:31 He loves people.
01:32 When we're on walks, he will rub up against people
01:35 and they're like, "Oh, what is rubbing?"
01:36 When I take him to stores,
01:37 he'll get in other people's carts.
01:39 Lady, can you take me home?
01:40 He is so sweet.
01:41 He's just 20 pounds of sweetness.
01:44 I think because he lived with dogs,
01:46 he's more a dog than cat.
01:47 Hi, Blake.
01:48 (cat meows)
01:49 I have to put signs on my door because if somebody comes in,
01:51 he'll run straight out to go see them.
01:53 You're not happy with your diet?
01:55 (laughs)
01:56 Cat.
01:57 He likes to play with my other cats,
01:59 but they are girls, so they're a little bit overpowering.
02:02 They'll smack it, but he never retaliates.
02:04 He takes the hits.
02:06 (cat meows)
02:08 Sometimes I think he has brain damage
02:10 because he looks like he's just there staring at a wall.
02:13 I come from a family that hated cats,
02:18 believed in all the stereotypes of cats.
02:20 And then when I met my first cat, I was like,
02:23 "Wow, all these stereotypes are not true about cats.
02:26 They are really great companions."
02:28 Since then, I started rescuing chronically ill cats.
02:31 He's a fighter.
02:32 He's had three surgeries in the four months
02:34 that I've had him.
02:35 Whenever he's recovering, he just comes straight to me
02:37 and just wants to be taken care of and nurtured.
02:40 And every time he just comes out on top,
02:42 the shelter said he's not photogenic.
02:44 I think he's the most beautiful cat ever.
