Nationwide search for blood donors for SA mother

  • last year
A nationwide search has been launched for blood donors to help a woman with a blood type so rare, that just one in every 10-thousand people might be a match.
Transcript
00:00 37-year-old Amira is currently in the Royal Adelaide Hospital waiting to undergo open
00:07 heart surgery.
00:08 It is expected that she will need more than 20 bags of blood prior to, during and after
00:15 that procedure.
00:16 Amira does have a rare combination of blood types, but Lifeblood's medical director James
00:23 Daly has said that anyone with the blood type A or O can potentially be a match.
00:34 Lifeblood have identified a few suitable donors, but because Amira is going to be needing so
00:39 much blood, they are calling on anyone right around the country with the blood type A or
00:45 O to roll up their sleeves and to see if that blood can be used.
00:50 Once that blood has been donated, we will then have to undergo a few more tests to see
00:56 if it is suitable.
00:58 The supplies of this rare blood type have now been exhausted in the country.
01:04 Lifeblood are working with international blood services to see if they can secure more of
01:09 this rare blood type.
01:11 They will need about 15 more donations within the next few weeks so that Amira can undergo
01:17 that open heart surgery.
01:19 If people are wanting to donate but don't know exactly what blood type they have, Lifeblood
01:24 has said the best way to find out is to go and donate blood and see if they are a potential
01:29 match.
