00:00 Here's who stood out on day 1 of 49ers training camp.
00:03 Keep in mind the practice was short and the players did not wear pads.
00:07 The first day in pads will be Monday.
00:09 The good, wide receiver Debo Samuel.
00:13 He says he's the lightest and fastest he's been since his rookie year and it shows.
00:17 He definitely is in fantastic shape.
00:20 Unfortunately for him he caught neither of his two targets during 11 on 11s.
00:23 They were broken up by Treverius Ward and Fred Warner respectively.
00:27 More on them in a minute.
00:28 Still, Samuel's stock is back up.
00:31 After practice he spoke to the media and when he was asked about Brock Purdy, Samuel said
00:36 that the quarterback competition will be intense this year and that Tre Lance has improved
00:40 a lot.
00:41 Never mentioned Purdy.
00:43 Quite interesting.
00:45 Linebacker Fred Warner.
00:46 He broke up a beautifully thrown deep pass from Lance that was intended for Samuel.
00:50 Testing Warner's coverage never is a good idea.
00:53 He's the best coverage linebacker I've ever seen.
00:56 Wide receiver Brandon Ayuk.
00:58 He's beginning to emerge as the go-to guy on 3rd down.
01:01 He beat Isaiah Oliver over the middle for a 15 yard catch on 3rd and 7, then made a
01:06 leaping 10 yard catch over Diamador Lenore on 3rd and 8, popped up, and got right in
01:11 Lenore's face to tell him about it.
01:13 I give it a week before someone on the defense punches Ayuk.
01:16 He's so intense every day.
01:18 I love it.
01:19 Strong safety Talonowa Hufunga.
01:21 He broke up and nearly intercepted a horrendous deep pass from Sam Darnold that was intended
01:25 for Danny Gray, who had beaten the cornerback.
01:28 Darnold tried to look off Hufunga but failed, and so Hufunga read the play and broke up
01:33 the pass.
01:34 He does that a lot.
01:36 Running back Ty Davis Price.
01:37 The 49ers gave Christian McCaffrey the day off, so the younger running backs got a chance
01:41 to shine, and Davis Price was the most impressive one.
01:45 He ran hard, was decisive, and even made a 30 yard catch.
01:49 He looks like a totally different player than last year when he was a rookie.
01:53 Cornerback Treverius Ward.
01:54 He broke up a pass from Lance that was intended for Samuel, who ran a quick curl route, but
01:58 didn't fool Ward, who broke up the pass as Samuel fell to the ground.
02:02 Ward stood over him and flexed after the play.
02:05 Running back Kalen Laberne.
02:07 He got one carry and gained 10 yards on a shotgun stretch run to the left.
02:11 Laberne clearly is explosive and fast.
02:13 He just might make the 53 man roster.
02:17 The not so good.
02:18 Right tackle Colton McKibbitz.
02:20 The 49ers struggled running the ball to the right last year when they had Mike McGlinchey.
02:24 Now he's gone and his replacement is his former backup Colton McKibbitz, who is a worse run
02:29 blocker than McGlinchey.
02:30 So it's no surprise that the 49ers runs to the right mostly got stuffed at the line of
02:34 scrimmage today.
02:35 Expect the run game to be even more left handed this year than last year.
02:39 Running back Jordan Mason.
02:41 He fumbled once, recovered it, but still, and dropped a pass.
02:45 He's in fantastic shape, but so are all the running backs.
02:48 Mason needs to hold on to the ball.
02:50 Tight end Cam Lattu.
02:52 He got zero separation running a quick out route against safety Andrew Hawkins, who probably
02:56 won't make the team.
02:58 Lattu doesn't seem like a tight end who can beat man to man coverage.
03:02 The Niners will have to scheme him open.
03:04 Wide receiver Danny Gray.
03:05 He caught one deep pass out of bounds and let Talonowa Hufunga out jump him for another
03:10 deep pass.
03:11 Gray doesn't seem to have made strides since last year.
03:14 He's a one trick pony who can't pull off his one trick.
03:19 (upbeat music)
