06:32 Welcome back to From the South.
06:34 On Friday, Russian President Vladimir Putin opened the second and final day of the Russia-Africa
06:40 Summit in St. Petersburg.
06:42 During his address to the plenary session, he stressed the importance of his country's
06:46 friendly ties with the African continent.
06:49 Referring to the expressions of colonialism that remain latent, he emphasized that the
06:54 new, truly multipolar world order that is being created is essentially based on ideals
06:59 of freedom, independence and sovereignty.
07:02 The head of the state analyzed the unstable situation of several African nations, determined
07:08 by their colonial legacy and ratified his country's willingness to continue operating
07:13 and cooperating with Africa, as it did during the pandemic.
07:18 A paradoxical situation is emerging.
07:25 On the one hand, Western countries are obstructing supplies of our grain and fertilizers.
07:31 On the other hand, I will say frankly, they hypocritically accuse us of the current crisis
07:36 situation on the world food market.
07:39 Russia's share of the world wheat market is 20%, while Ukraine has less than 5%.
07:45 This means that Russia makes a significant contribution to global food security and the
07:49 country is a solid, responsible international supplier of agricultural products.
07:55 Our country will continue to support states and regions in need, including with its humanitarian
08:00 supplies.
08:01 We are endeavoring to participate actively in shaping a more equitable system of resource
08:07 allocation.
08:09 And developing ties with African countries is one of the invariable priorities of the
08:13 Russian Federation, as the Russian President Vladimir Putin told his Ugandan counterpart
08:19 Juwari Museveni on Thursday.
08:21 The Ugandan president invited Russia to take part in the exploration of the oil in East
08:26 Africa.
08:27 For his part, President Putin has been holding bilateral meetings with African leaders on
08:32 the sidelines of the Russia-Africa Summit in St. Petersburg.
08:44 This forum is very important for us.
08:46 The comprehensive development of ties with African countries in politics, in the field
08:50 of security, in the trade and economic and humanitarian spheres is one of the invariable
08:55 priorities of Russian foreign policy.
08:57 And Uganda is certainly among Russia's key partners on the African continent.
09:02 "We propose new areas, like for instance the area of refinery and exploration for petroleum
09:15 products.
09:16 We have got some little oil which we want to export as crude but also refined for the
09:26 East African market.
09:31 But Russian companies can also take part in exploration for more oil in our area.
09:40 Russian is high, but we are still producing raw materials."
09:45 Excellency, allow me to personally state that Zimbabwe is in solidarity with the Russian
09:50 Federation in your country's special military operation in Ukraine.
09:58 As current chair of the Kimberley Process Certification Scheme, the KPC, Zimbabwe unreservedly
10:05 condemns the unjustified and vindictive ban on the sale of Russian diamonds on the world
10:13 market.
10:14 On Thursday, the Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Andean President Joko Widodo in Shenzhen,
10:22 the capital city of the southwest China's Sichuan province, where the 31st International
10:28 University Sports Federation Summer World University Games will take place.
10:33 Widodo will be among the foreign leaders and the senior officials to attend the opening
10:38 ceremony of the Shenzhen University Games.
10:41 Now we move on to other topics.
10:59 The Russian military claimed on Thursday that Ukrainian forces suffered heavy losses during
11:04 an offensive attempt in Zaporizhia.
11:08 In the Zaporizhia direction, the enemy didn't conduct any active actions overnight, and
11:13 restoring combat capability after the offensive of the Ukrainian Armed Forces north of the
11:18 settlement of Rovoten in the Zaporizhia region, in which up to three battalion tactical groups
11:24 from the Strategic Reserve Brigades were involved, failed, and the enemy suffered heavy losses.
11:31 Enemy losses per day in these directions amounted to more than 280 Ukrainian servicemen, 25
11:38 tanks, 10 infantry fighting vehicles, three armored combat vehicles, two vehicles, a Sheikh's
11:44 made RM-17 "Vampire" multiple rocket launcher, as well as two howitzers FH-70 made in the
11:50 UK.
11:52 The Russian Armed Forces delivered concentrated strikes with long-range air and sea-based
11:57 high-precision weapons against airfields, control and deployment centers of the Ukrainian
12:02 Armed Forces, assembly shops and storage sites for main boats, as well as missiles, weapons
12:08 and military equipment received from European countries and the United States.
12:13 The target has been reached.
12:14 All assigned objects are hit.

13:20 alleged riots committed by people demonstrating support for those holding the President, Mohammed

14:03 Zayinab neighborhood.
14:10 In Zimbabwe, supporters of the main opposition party attended a Citizens Coalition for Change,
14:16 the ZCC, rally in Sheguru, ahead of the country's general election on August 23rd.

14:27 directed towards members of the opposition.
14:30 Shumiza further called for transparency in the forthcoming elections, urging the United
14:34 Nations and other observation bodies to be allowed to oversee the election in the Southern
14:40 African country.
14:59 Now we move on to other topics.
15:00 In Greece, firefighters rushed to tackle forest fires amid renewed winds.

15:21 In Pakistan, at least 11 people have died due to heavy rains and floods over the last
15:26 24 hours, bringing the total death toll to 168 since the start of the monsoon season
15:32 on June 25th.
15:34 The National Disaster Management Authority reported that among the victims, there are
15:38 five children from different areas of the country.
15:46 In the Philippines, Typhoon Dog Suri lashed an island and ravaged northern provinces with
15:51 fierce winds and rains, displacing nearly 16,000 villagers as it flooded low-lying villages
15:57 and cut power supplies.
15:59 According to authorities, there were no immediate reports of casualties after the typhoon hit
16:04 Phuong Island in Cayenne Province, where 15,843 people were evacuated from high-risk coastal
16:12 villages.
16:18 And in Panama, the canal reduces the number of daily vessel transits preventively and
16:22 indefinitely due to the drought affecting the waterways' flow.
16:26 The Panama Canal Authority, Ricardo Tevazquez, indicated that the measure responds to the
16:32 need to minimize the probabilities of additional draughts in the coming weeks due to the drought
