Improving life from the ground up

It's customary in Japan to take off shoes and change to indoor footwear when entering a home or a public facility. This custom dates back about 150 years, when the Japanese made indoor shoes for western visitors who were not accustomed to taking shoes off. Over the years, slippers became the most common type, and today, they come in a vast variety of styles. Recently, new designs were developed to focus on keeping people fit at home by improving posture. We will see how the whole footwear culture evolved from love of cleanliness.

00:08 When you enter a Japanese home, you'll first find yourself in an area dedicated to removing your shoes.
00:14 [music]
00:17 There's a clear border between the interior and the outside world,
00:21 where you leave behind your outdoor shoes and any dirt they carry.
00:25 [music]
00:28 Schools and most public facilities also usually have a place where you're expected to change shoes.
00:34 [music]
00:38 Because they're so easy to use, slippers are the most common type of indoor footwear in Japan.
00:44 [music]
00:45 The Japanese first began using slippers about 150 years ago.
00:50 [music]
00:51 When Westerners came to Japan in the 19th century,
00:54 their custom of wearing shoes indoors didn't work well on traditional Japanese floors.
01:00 The solution was to provide slippers, easy to put on and comfortable to wear.
01:07 Today, slippers are considered indispensable for keeping homes clean.
01:11 [music]
01:17 Like all Japanese products, slippers come in a vast variety of styles.
01:21 [music]
01:24 There's something for every taste with slippers for every season.
01:28 [music]
01:30 We're always trying to provide something a little better, whether it's design or comfort.
01:34 People like a touch of luxury in their slippers.
01:38 [music]
01:40 These slippers have insoles made of traditional tatami mat material.
01:44 [music]
01:48 On hot days, the tatami keeps your feet cool and comfortable.
01:52 [music]
01:55 And of course, if you're a fan of cute designs, you have plenty of choices.
02:00 [music]
02:02 There are even slippers that clean the floor as you walk about your home.
02:06 [music]
02:09 The soles essentially act as a small mop.
02:13 [music]
02:16 This is a company that's been making slippers for half a century.
02:20 [music]
02:22 Because we're all currently spending more time at home and not getting enough exercise,
02:27 they decided to design slippers for health.
02:32 Development was done in collaboration with a university sports scientist, Araki Kunikum.
02:37 [music]
02:42 The result was these slippers that effectively improve posture.
02:46 All you have to do is wear them.
02:50 If you look closely, you can see a round bump where your heel rests.
02:54 [music]
02:57 Any stimulus to the heel is felt everywhere in the body.
03:01 By simply adding this bump, we create a stimulus that helps you achieve increased overall stability.
03:08 [music]
03:11 The effect is to stabilize your trunk, aligning waist, back, and head.
03:16 [music]
03:20 This promotes ideal posture and lengthens your spine.
03:24 [music]
03:28 These slippers don't just improve posture, they make it more comfortable to walk.
03:33 [music]
03:35 This happens thanks to another bump just below the toes.
03:39 [music]
03:42 It encourages your feet to push more firmly against the floor, making walking easier.
03:48 [music]
03:50 Because it becomes easier to move forward, naturally you start taking bigger strides.
03:55 And when you take bigger strides, you start to fully engage all the muscles on the rear of your legs.
04:01 You'll be using the muscles from your thighs to your calves far more than you've ever done before.
04:07 [music]
04:09 Just casually moving around your home, with the right slippers, this can be the first step to better health.
04:15 [music]
04:19 From the simple desire to keep homes clean, a whole indoor footwear culture developed.
04:26 And it's still evolving, improving the quality of life from the ground up.
