In this video, Ivy shows you how to make an airy and delicious breakfast with this deviled grits recipe. After partially cooking six slices of bacon, make the quick-cook grits over the stove. Once the grits have cooked, stir in butter, orange zest, and orange juice. Whisk four eggs into the grits mixture before baking it in the oven for 30 minutes. To the top, add candied bacon before baking for a final 15 minutes. This soufflé-like brunch dish is light, citrusy, and tastes decadent with the candied bacon.

00:00 These deviled grits are not what you think they are.
00:03 The very first step to deviled grits
00:04 is partially cooking six slices of bacon,
00:07 so about three to four minutes per side.
00:09 Next step to deviled grits, the grits.
00:11 I am bringing up a pot of salted water to a boil,
00:14 adding in some grits,
00:17 and they should cook in about three to five-ish minutes
00:20 'cause these are the quick cooking kind.
00:22 Don't use your old-fashioned stone ground grits for this.
00:26 They will take way too long to cook.
00:28 Once your grits are nice and cooked,
00:31 take them off the heat,
00:33 and then we can stir in our butter.
00:35 Now, I don't know about y'all,
00:36 but when I hear the term deviled grits,
00:39 this is not what I thought of.
00:41 We're adding the orange zest and a cup of orange juice.
00:46 I mean, I can kind of see where they were going
00:48 with this recipe because grits, orange juice, bacon,
00:52 that's like a full-on breakfast right there,
00:54 but all together, we're gonna find out.
00:57 So that this sets up in the oven,
00:58 we're also adding four eggs, giving it a whisk.
01:02 Be sure to stir it constantly as you add your eggs in
01:06 so that they don't curdle.
01:08 Here we go, it is going in the oven for 30 minutes,
01:11 and then we can add our bacon on top.
01:13 I saved a tablespoon of my bacon drippings
01:16 from whenever we were cooking bacon earlier.
01:18 I'm gonna add in some light brown sugar and our bacon
01:22 so that we can make basically candied bacon.
01:25 I accidentally dropped a couple of bacon crumbs
01:27 on the floor as I was breaking this up,
01:29 and you best believe my dog was right there.
01:32 Be sure to disperse our bacon pieces evenly
01:35 so that every single bite has candied bacon,
01:38 and then back into the oven for 15 more minutes.
01:41 Here we are with our grits out of the oven.
01:45 So if I just had this plate just like sitting
01:47 for me at breakfast, I would think this would be
01:49 like a savory grit casserole.
01:52 I would dig right in and probably be shocked.
01:54 Let's see if I will be good shocked or bad shocked.
01:58 Interesting.
02:00 Like I would call this orange corn souffle
02:03 with candied bacon because it is very orange forward,
02:07 and the grits are very light and fluffy
02:09 and airy like a souffle.
02:10 If you're into this adventure of orange juice grits,
02:14 by all means be my guest,
02:16 even if it is just for the candied bacon.
