The surge of shootings in Sydney has left the government trying to offer reassurance that gangland violence is not spiralling out of control. Authorities are ramping-up their efforts to tackle the crime-wave that's been plaguing the city for a month.

00:53 Ten days later a gunman opened fire inside a hair salon on busy Marrickville Road, injuring two brothers.
01:00 Then this week began with a shooting in Greenacre on Sunday where a gunman shot Ahmad Al-Azzam as he sat in his car.
01:08 He died in hospital yesterday.
01:10 A couple parked nearby were also hit by stray bullets but survived.
01:15 Two days later criminal lawyer Mahmood Abbas was shot in his driveway.
01:20 Early the next morning, Ferenc Stemmler, known as David, was shot dead outside his Canterbury home.
01:27 Police believe the latest conflict in south-western Sydney is motivated by the illicit drug trade and internal finger-pointing over who might be working with police.
01:36 They say it's escalated in recent weeks from firing warning shots to outright murder.
01:41 The way of causing compliance within these groups and resolving conflict was to shoot each other's houses up.
01:47 That obviously didn't work within an environment. That's escalated to gangland homicides.
