00:00:19 Come on guys, we're at a Lumberjack show.
00:00:21 I need you guys.
00:00:22 Good tolerance.
00:00:23 Stop it.
00:00:24 Let's try it again.
00:00:25 How are y'all feeling?
00:00:26 [Cheering]
00:00:27 You already feel much better.
00:00:29 Do we have any tourists in the audience here today?
00:00:31 Yeah?
00:00:32 Thank you.
00:00:33 All right, where are you guys from?
00:00:34 Yeah, you.
00:00:35 Where are you from?
00:00:36 Louisiana.
00:00:37 Any other tourists over here?
00:00:38 Yeah, where are you from?
00:00:39 Bagel Fort.
00:00:40 Cool.
00:00:41 All right.
00:00:42 And where are you from over here?
00:00:43 Eastern Canada.
00:00:44 Eastern Canada.
00:00:45 Any other tourists?
00:00:46 Where are you from?
00:00:47 Australia.
00:00:48 Australia?
00:00:49 Aussie, Aussie, Aussie?
00:00:50 [Cheering]
00:00:51 The Australian mating call.
00:00:52 All right, well my name is Lauren.
00:01:02 I'm going to be your MC for today.
00:01:03 And on behalf of Timberland Productions, I'd like to welcome you all here to the world
00:01:07 famous Grouse Mountain Lumberjack Show.
00:01:09 So over the next 30 minutes, we will journey into the past to experience what an old time
00:01:14 Lumberjack competition was like.
00:01:15 But first, let me fill you guys in on a little bit of history.
00:01:18 So during the early 1900s, cities and towns in the west were rapidly expanding due to
00:01:24 the gold rush.
00:01:25 Now building materials were needed to meet with these construction demands, and those
00:01:29 materials were found right here in the beautiful forests of British Columbia.
00:01:32 Now this presented new opportunity for those who were willing to work hard.
00:01:36 And we called these guys Lumberjacks.
00:01:38 They lived in remote camps in the valleys where the logging was taking place.
00:01:42 Their wages were only a few dollars a day, and the work was extremely dangerous.
00:01:46 So first the trees, they were felled and then limbed and transported to the nearest rivers
00:01:51 using horses, oxen, and log chutes.
00:01:53 Once in the river, they were floated downstream to the nearest sawmill to be cut into lumber.
00:01:58 Now these guys would be working for weeks on end until payday came along, and then it
00:02:03 was time to head into town and blow off a little bit of steam.
00:02:06 So these guys would get to drinking and bragging about who was the best Lumberjack, and the
00:02:11 only real way to settle it was a good old fashioned Lumberjack competition.
00:02:14 So that's where all you folks come in.
00:02:16 Are you ready?
00:02:17 [Cheering]
00:02:19 Alright, I think we're going to put that top bleacher over on this side.
00:02:23 Okay, so I'm going to split you guys down the middle here.
00:02:25 Everybody over here, you guys are all from the Blue Mountain Logging Camp.
00:02:28 Alright.
00:02:29 Alright.
00:02:30 So let me tell you a little bit about Blue Mountain.
00:02:32 You folks live way back in the woods.
00:02:34 You don't get out very much.
00:02:36 So when you do, you tend to get a little loud and rowdy.
00:02:39 So on the count of three, I want to hear your biggest, loudest, rowdiest Blue Mountain cheer.
00:02:43 Are you ready?
00:02:44 One, two, three!
00:02:45 [Cheering]
00:02:55 Alright, I think they're ready to go.
00:02:59 So everybody over on these bleachers are from the Green River Sawmill.
00:03:03 [Buzzer]
00:03:05 Now you folks live a little bit closer to town, and you're a whole lot more civilized
00:03:09 than those Blue Mountain truffles over there.
00:03:11 But you're not going to be outdone by them, are you?
00:03:13 No!
00:03:15 So what we're going to do on the count of one, I would like to hear a nice, polite golf clap.
00:03:19 On two, you're going to build up the volume.
00:03:22 And on three, you're going to knock their socks off, okay?
00:03:25 Here we go.
00:03:26 One, two, and three!
00:03:30 [Cheering]
00:03:33 Now, let's bring out your lumberjacks.
00:03:36 From the Green River Sawmill, he's one of the top axemen in the woods.
00:03:39 Put your hands together for Johnny Nelson!
00:03:41 [Cheering]
00:03:44 From the Blue Mountain Logging family, he is one of the best log rollers you're ever going to see.
00:03:48 Put your hands together for Wild Willie McKee!
00:03:51 [Cheering]
00:03:55 Alright, our first event here is going to be the underhand chop.
00:03:58 So our lumberjacks are up on these horizontal blocks of wood.
00:04:01 They're going to be chopping right between their toes using their razor-sharp bracing axes.
00:04:05 Now, these axes weigh about seven or eight pounds.
00:04:08 They're going to start on one side, chopping about halfway through,
00:04:11 before they turn around and finish up from the other side.
00:04:14 The first lumberjack to sever his block in two is going to be the winner.
00:04:17 And that's going to be us, right Green?
00:04:19 [Cheering]
00:04:20 Yeah, no way. That'll be us, right Blue?
00:04:22 [Cheering]
00:04:24 Lumberjacks ready. One, two, go!
00:04:27 [Music]
00:04:29 Alright, let's cheer up the lumberjacks here.
00:04:32 [Music]
00:04:45 Alright, looks like Green is getting started.
00:04:47 And Blue is going to be the last to chew on the ender bone.
00:04:51 [Music]
00:04:57 Alright, let's get this. Come on, let's do this!
00:05:00 [Music]
00:05:02 [Cheering]
00:05:04 Oh, it was so close, but it goes to Blue Mountain!
00:05:07 [Cheering]
00:05:09 Whatever.
00:05:10 [Laughter]
00:05:12 I just got lucky.
00:05:14 Yeah, you just got second.
00:05:15 [Laughter]
00:05:17 Alright, on to our next event.
00:05:19 The guys are going to put away their chopping axes and bring out some throwing axes now.
00:05:24 So back in the day, as the tree fallers were walking through the woods,
00:05:26 they took to throwing their axe into the next tree they wanted to chop down.
00:05:30 This became a popular pastime back at the logging camps,
00:05:33 especially on a Friday night after a couple of drinks.
00:05:36 So our lumberjacks are going to be using stubble-bladed throwing axes here today,
00:05:39 and they're going to be throwing at this target right next to the pond.
00:05:42 The center of that target is worth five points,
00:05:44 and then four, three, two, and one for that little outside ring.
00:05:47 Highest possible score here is going to be 15 points,
00:05:50 because we're giving them one practice throw and three throws that count.
00:05:53 And since Willie won the chop, we're going to let him go first.
00:05:57 [Laughter]
00:06:02 Alright, good-looking practice throw there.
00:06:05 [Applause]
00:06:07 Okay, whoa!
00:06:08 [Laughter]
00:06:09 What are you doing?
00:06:10 I was practicing.
00:06:11 Nice.
00:06:12 [Laughter]
00:06:16 [Applause]
00:06:20 So these next throws are going to count here, folks.
00:06:23 Alright, come on, help me out here.
00:06:25 [Cheering]
00:06:30 Who's axe did you hit, Willie?
00:06:33 I'm watching you, sir.
00:06:35 [Laughter]
00:06:40 Four.
00:06:41 Alright, four points for Blue Mountain.
00:06:46 [Cheering]
00:06:52 [Applause]
00:06:54 Four or five?
00:06:55 Just the four.
00:06:56 It's the four, which is still really good.
00:06:58 So they're all tied up after one throw.
00:07:00 Second throw coming up here.
00:07:01 Hush!
00:07:02 Oh, come on.
00:07:03 [Laughter]
00:07:04 Hey, what was that?
00:07:05 I got allergies.
00:07:06 Allergies, huh?
00:07:07 Yes.
00:07:08 Are you allergic to losing?
00:07:09 No.
00:07:10 Okay, that's a three.
00:07:11 Yep.
00:07:12 So you're up to seven.
00:07:14 Second throw here for Willie.
00:07:17 What are you doing?
00:07:18 Cleaning.
00:07:19 You have never cleaned before.
00:07:21 I've never had allergies.
00:07:23 [Laughter]
00:07:25 Alright, second throw coming up.
00:07:26 Green River.
00:07:29 [Cheering]
00:07:31 That's a four, right?
00:07:33 If you want to count it, it's a four.
00:07:35 [Laughter]
00:07:37 Alright, they're tied up after two throws at seven points apiece.
00:07:40 Last throw coming up here.
00:07:43 Oh!
00:07:44 Is that a one?
00:07:47 We'll give you one point for that.
00:07:49 [Laughter]
00:07:50 Hey, that's pretty impressive.
00:07:52 Come on.
00:07:53 Alright, so you've got eight points.
00:07:55 You need a one here to tie.
00:07:57 Anything over a one to win.
00:07:59 I don't miss.
00:08:00 [Cheering]
00:08:05 [Cheering]
00:08:07 Green River.
00:08:09 [Applause]
00:08:11 Alright, they're putting away their axes now.
00:08:13 They're going to bring out some crosscut saws.
00:08:15 So these are the saws that lumberjacks would have used back in the day
00:08:18 before chainsaws came along.
00:08:20 They used to come up with all kinds of silly names for them.
00:08:22 Old Swede Fiddle or Misery Whip.
00:08:25 I think you'll soon find out why.
00:08:27 Looks like they've got their saw teeth set in there.
00:08:29 The first lumberjack to get all the way through the block of wood
00:08:31 is going to be the winner.
00:08:32 So who's cheering for Johnny?
00:08:34 Everybody!
00:08:35 [Cheering]
00:08:36 And who's cheering for Willie?
00:08:38 [Cheering]
00:08:40 Lumberjacks ready.
00:08:41 One, two.
00:08:43 Hold on, hold on.
00:08:44 What happened?
00:08:45 I think I just pulled my back.
00:08:47 Just now?
00:08:48 What are we going to do?
00:08:49 Just give me a minute.
00:08:50 Let me stand up and straighten it out.
00:08:52 Okay, hurry up.
00:08:53 Please stand up and stretch out your back.
00:08:57 What are you doing?
00:08:59 No, come on, put the saw back on the wood.
00:09:02 Put that back on the wood.
00:09:03 Willie.
00:09:05 Willie, what are you doing?
00:09:07 Just idling.
00:09:09 You saw what he did.
00:09:11 I did see what he did.
00:09:12 You're both cheaters.
00:09:13 Okay, lumberjacks ready.
00:09:15 One, two, go.
00:09:17 [Cheering]
00:09:35 I don't know how to finish, but I'm going to say Green River.
00:09:38 [Cheering]
00:09:43 It's okay, it's a stupid event anyways.
00:09:46 I'm not surprised you beat that.
00:09:48 Get out of here.
00:09:49 Never in the dead of my mind I'd win that saw.
00:09:53 Blew you out of the water on the ax throw too.
00:09:56 I mean, let's be honest, I let him win the chop.
00:09:59 No, you did not.
00:10:00 It doesn't matter what this guy does.
00:10:02 Win or lose, he's just always bragging.
00:10:04 Brag, brag, brag.
00:10:05 I'm not bragging.
00:10:06 I'm just the best.
00:10:07 Right, Green?
00:10:08 [Cheering]
00:10:10 Hold on a minute.
00:10:11 What makes you think you're so good?
00:10:13 I'm the best and I can prove it.
00:10:14 How are you going to prove it?
00:10:15 I guarantee I win the next event.
00:10:17 Johnny, how can you guarantee that?
00:10:19 Because I'm the only one in it.
00:10:21 [Laughter]
00:10:22 Those are pretty good odds, aren't they?
00:10:24 What are you going to be doing for us?
00:10:26 Well, I just so happen to be a world record speed chainsaw carver.
00:10:30 Oh.
00:10:31 Hold the applause.
00:10:32 [Laughter]
00:10:33 Yeah, with a block of wood like this and a steel chainsaw like this,
00:10:37 I can carve up a recognizable animal in my time of 25.1 seconds.
00:10:42 25.1 seconds.
00:10:44 That is really quick.
00:10:46 Yeah, I get that a lot.
00:10:48 [Laughter]
00:10:49 Okay, so what are you going to be carving us?
00:10:51 Well, you remember coming up along the path,
00:10:53 you see the big carving of the bear and the eagle and everything else.
00:10:57 It's pretty good, right?
00:10:58 Yeah.
00:10:59 Yeah, I didn't do that.
00:11:00 [Laughter]
00:11:01 I'll tell you what, I was on my way to work this morning
00:11:03 and I saw the cutest little bunny rabbit,
00:11:05 so I figured I'd carve up a bunny for you.
00:11:07 How does that sound?
00:11:08 [Cheers]
00:11:09 So you're going to carve them up a bunny rabbit with that steel chainsaw in 25.1 seconds?
00:11:13 Not only that, I'm feeling so good today.
00:11:16 I think we can break this record.
00:11:18 I just need a timer to make it official.
00:11:20 All right, does anybody in the audience have a stopwatch or a timer on their phone
00:11:23 that can time this for us?
00:11:25 [Indistinct chatter]
00:11:27 Okay, I think we've got a volunteer right here.
00:11:29 [Laughter]
00:11:31 No, it's okay. You can stay in your seat.
00:11:34 What's your name?
00:11:36 Cyrus.
00:11:37 Oh, sorry, what?
00:11:38 Cyrus Robert Eugene Yarjo.
00:11:42 Okay, Bob, here's what's going to happen.
00:11:44 I've got my hand on the wood, Lauren's going to yell "go," you start the time,
00:11:48 I carve up the cutest bunny you've ever seen,
00:11:50 I'll slow down, put my hands in the air, and you tell me my new world record time.
00:11:54 You got it?
00:11:57 [Laughter]
00:11:59 You warm up the saw.
00:12:01 So I'm going to say "one, two, go," and you start the time.
00:12:03 And then when he turns off the saw, you stop the watch and call out the time.
00:12:07 [Saw cutting wood]
00:12:23 All right.
00:12:24 All right, timer ready.
00:12:26 Hang on a second.
00:12:28 I'm going to say "one, two, go," and then you start the time.
00:12:30 Oh, you say "go."
00:12:31 I say "go," yeah.
00:12:32 I thought I said "go."
00:12:33 That's my job.
00:12:35 All right, reset.
00:12:36 Timer, are you ready?
00:12:37 Lumberjack ready.
00:12:38 One, two, go!
00:12:40 [Lumberjack cutting wood]
00:12:44 Stop the time!
00:12:46 How did I do?
00:12:47 Six seconds.
00:12:48 Six seconds, I crushed the record!
00:12:50 Stop the press, call the media, the crowd goes wild!
00:12:53 [Cheering]
00:12:57 There's so many people I'd like to thank for this.
00:13:00 My mom for trusting me this morning.
00:13:03 Billy's mom for last night.
00:13:05 My time.
00:13:06 [Laughter]
00:13:08 Where is the bunny?
00:13:09 Oh, it's right here.
00:13:10 I don't see it.
00:13:11 Sure, look.
00:13:12 You've got an eye right here, and a nose, and two cute little ears.
00:13:17 Right?
00:13:18 They see it.
00:13:19 No, Johnny, where did you see a bunny that looked like that?
00:13:22 I told you, I was on my way to work this morning.
00:13:24 It was right on the side of the road.
00:13:26 It looked just like that.
00:13:28 [Laughter]
00:13:30 That's terrible!
00:13:31 Well, that's only nature.
00:13:33 No, come on, is that all you're going to do for us?
00:13:35 No, I've got tons of wood left.
00:13:36 I can carve up a whole family if you want.
00:13:39 No, I don't think the audience wants to see a family roadkill.
00:13:42 Sure they do.
00:13:43 I'll get the mother-in-law right here.
00:13:45 [Laughter]
00:13:47 It's a whole family tree.
00:13:49 Hey, Johnny, you want to know what me and the rest of the blue think of your little bunny massacre?
00:13:54 What's that?
00:13:55 This is you, pal.
00:13:56 [Laughter]
00:14:00 Yeah, I'd like to see you do any better.
00:14:02 Yeah, you know what, that shouldn't be too hard.
00:14:04 What do you guys say?
00:14:05 You want to see a real bunny carving?
00:14:06 [Cheering]
00:14:08 Are you sure about this, Billy?
00:14:09 Yeah, it can't be that hard, right?
00:14:11 All right, so do you need a timer for this?
00:14:13 No, that's okay.
00:14:15 Careful.
00:14:17 Yeah, no speed records or anything like that, but I'll tell you what, one bunny coming right up.
00:14:21 All right, Willie's going to save the day with a bunny.
00:14:24 As soon as I fix my ear protection here.
00:14:28 Safety first.
00:14:29 These are so annoying.
00:14:30 All right, let's go.
00:14:32 [Carving sounds]
00:15:01 [Carving sounds]
00:15:12 [Carving sounds]
00:15:32 All right, we got bunny ears.
00:15:34 [Carving sounds]
00:15:46 [Laughter]
00:15:48 What are you laughing for? It's good.
00:15:50 Is that it? You're done?
00:15:51 Yeah, I'm done. It's a bunny rabbit. I've got to show them.
00:15:53 I don't think you should show them that.
00:15:54 Look, it's a bunny. Right, guys?
00:15:56 [Laughter]
00:15:57 Thank you. Thank you so much.
00:16:00 It's okay, you guys do not have to clap for that.
00:16:02 Yep, don't clap, just throw money.
00:16:04 No, come on. Willie, this is not good.
00:16:07 Not good? Come on, it's great.
00:16:08 Look, you've got the bunny ears, eyes, nose, a cute bunny smile.
00:16:11 What's it missing, right?
00:16:13 Come on, guys, what's this bunny missing? Yell it out.
00:16:15 Tail.
00:16:16 [Crowd shouts]
00:16:18 Hey, you can go home, kid.
00:16:19 [Laughter]
00:16:20 I was joking.
00:16:21 But they're right, it needs whiskers and a tail.
00:16:23 Okay, fine, I get it. You want more bunny parts.
00:16:25 Yeah.
00:16:26 All right, I'll fix it.
00:16:28 [Motor]
00:16:46 There you go, we got whiskers and a tail.
00:16:49 [Motor]
00:17:18 [Motor]
00:17:25 There we go, we got a fluffy tail.
00:17:27 Hey, we got a bunny tail, nice.
00:17:29 Hey, how about a bushy mono brow?
00:17:31 A mono brow?
00:17:32 Yeah, a mono brow, just like Johnny. You guys will love it.
00:17:35 [Motor]
00:17:43 Ah, it's coming for me, I'll fix it.
00:17:45 I don't know what to say.
00:17:47 I don't know, distract them, they're mostly tourists, it should be easy.
00:17:50 Look over there.
00:17:51 Ah!
00:17:53 He's okay.
00:17:55 [Applause]
00:17:57 Oh, he's so happy, look at him smiling.
00:18:00 Yeah, I don't think so, Willie. I think everyone saw what you just did there.
00:18:04 What I did? Come on, it's your fault.
00:18:06 Wait a minute, how is that my fault?
00:18:08 Well, I'm making the crucial mono brow cut, and what do you do?
00:18:11 She comes running up here, yelling and screaming,
00:18:14 waving her tiny little axe around at me.
00:18:17 You distracted me.
00:18:19 Made me cut a hair too deep.
00:18:23 A hair too deep, huh?
00:18:25 Yeah, it's in the script, I have to say it.
00:18:28 No, you know what, Willie, people came from all over the world here today to see our lumberjack show,
00:18:31 and you're just up here wasting their time.
00:18:33 No, they came to see the bears.
00:18:35 You know what, just go sit down over there and think about what you just did.
00:18:38 Yeah, fine, maybe I will.
00:18:39 Fine, do that.
00:18:40 Your job is so hard, you just yell at them.
00:18:42 I'm going to punch the next of it.
00:18:46 Hold on a second, what did you do there, Willie?
00:18:48 Cut the head off, funny.
00:18:50 Not that, the cute little thing you're sitting on.
00:18:53 What?
00:18:54 Well, come on, stand up, show everyone that cute little thing you're sitting on.
00:18:58 Well, okay, I have been working out a lot lately.
00:19:03 No, no, no, not that.
00:19:05 Oh, the chair, okay.
00:19:06 Guys, give him a hand, he just parked up a cute little chair.
00:19:09 [Applause]
00:19:13 Hey, I've got no idea how that happened, but it's a little bit too small for me, kind of a one-cheeker.
00:19:19 So maybe on behalf of Girls From Out in the Lumberjack Show, we can give away this little hair chair, huh?
00:19:24 That is a great idea.
00:19:25 We're going to need somebody pretty young to fit that chair, though.
00:19:28 Yeah, maybe the youngest person in the audience or something like that.
00:19:31 That's a great idea.
00:19:32 Do we have any babies in the audience here today?
00:19:34 Anyone have a baby with them?
00:19:36 No?
00:19:37 Okay, children, how old are your kids over there?
00:19:40 How old?
00:19:42 Seven, anyone younger than seven?
00:19:44 Six, and you up there?
00:19:48 How old?
00:19:50 Oh, you're six, okay.
00:19:53 Oh, my gosh, okay, four, going once, going twice.
00:19:56 Hold on, hold on.
00:19:57 I think I saw a pregnant lady in the back.
00:20:00 I don't think she's going to fit the chair, Johnny.
00:20:03 We're not going to wait.
00:20:05 All right, four-year-old, come on down.
00:20:07 We're going to see if this little lumberjack chair fits.
00:20:09 Johnny, we do love talking to you.
00:20:12 Can you keep it in your mouth, please?
00:20:14 Yeah, if it fits, you get to keep it.
00:20:16 And if it doesn't, you get to keep it.
00:20:19 Maybe a little snack if you get hungry.
00:20:21 What do you think?
00:20:23 Can you have a little seat on it?
00:20:24 Here, I'll hold it for you.
00:20:26 Here you go.
00:20:29 Isn't it perfect, guys?
00:20:32 All right, well, you get to take that little chair home with you.
00:20:35 Can you carry that?
00:20:37 That's a stonk chair.
00:20:39 All right, have another round of applause for our little lumberjack.
00:20:44 Oh, sorry, where's the mom?
00:20:47 Oh, no mom?
00:20:50 You're in charge, I'm assuming.
00:20:52 Do you like the chair?
00:20:54 Awesome, 20 bucks, please.
00:20:57 Oh, come on, I can't.
00:20:58 Free chair, free chair.
00:21:01 All right, on to our next event, the one you've all been waiting for,
00:21:04 the tree climb or the speed climb.
00:21:07 So these trees behind me here are called spar trees.
00:21:10 And back in the day, a lumberjack called a high rigger would head into the forest
00:21:13 where the logging was taking place, looking for one of the tallest trees around.
00:21:17 He would climb this tree, limmy it as he went, and chop the top off.
00:21:21 He would then attach a large pulley called a block to the top
00:21:24 and run a steel cable up and through that pulley out into the forest.
00:21:27 The other end of this cable was attached to a steam engine at the base of the tree
00:21:31 called a donkey.
00:21:33 Now, they would fire up this steam engine and yard the logs from the forest
00:21:37 to the base of the tree where they could later be transferred to the river.
00:21:40 Now, this work was so dangerous, it was often referred to as widow's work.
00:21:44 Ah!
00:21:45 What?
00:21:47 I'm not even married.
00:21:50 Yeah, we're both totally single, actually.
00:21:53 Yeah, you can find us on timber.
00:21:58 Our three brave lumberjacks are going to be--
00:22:00 So normally what we do is we have both of our lumberjacks race to the top,
00:22:04 ring the bells, and come back down as fast as they can.
00:22:06 But unfortunately, Johnny here had a terrible accident last year,
00:22:10 and he broke his leg in three places.
00:22:12 So he doesn't do the climbing for us anymore.
00:22:14 So we're going to have Willie do a demonstration climb for you guys.
00:22:18 How fast do you guys think Willie can make it up and down the tree?
00:22:21 Any guesses? Yell it out.
00:22:23 30 seconds, 20 seconds, 50 seconds, 12 minutes.
00:22:30 All right, all right, all right.
00:22:32 Hold on.
00:22:33 I just so happen to hold the record of going up and down these 60 foot spar trees
00:22:38 in my time of 19 seconds.
00:22:41 19 seconds? That is quick.
00:22:44 When did you do that?
00:22:45 That was the day I broke my leg.
00:22:47 [laughter]
00:22:49 That explains it.
00:22:50 No, I figured if Willie can get to the top and back faster than my time of 19 seconds,
00:22:55 he gets the point.
00:22:56 If not, the point goes to Green.
00:22:58 How does that sound?
00:22:59 [cheers and applause]
00:23:00 What do you think about that, Willie?
00:23:02 You know what? I think I'm feeling good.
00:23:03 We can do that right?
00:23:04 [cheers and applause]
00:23:07 All right, so Willie's going to be racing the clock here.
00:23:09 Do we have a timer that can--?
00:23:11 Yeah.
00:23:12 I can time it.
00:23:13 You're going to time it for us?
00:23:14 Sure.
00:23:15 I've got a little watch right here.
00:23:17 All right, Johnny is going to time this for us.
00:23:21 He's trying to beat a time of 19 seconds.
00:23:24 So let's cheer him on here, folks.
00:23:26 Lumberjack, ready?
00:23:27 One, two, go!
00:23:29 [cheers and applause]
00:23:30 Come on, let's cheer him all the way up and all the way back down this tree.
00:23:33 [music]
00:23:35 It looks like he's making some good time.
00:23:37 Come on, keep cheering him on here.
00:23:39 Ring the bell.
00:23:41 Oh, the bell in a hurry.
00:23:44 It looks pretty fast, right, Johnny?
00:23:46 It looks really fast.
00:23:48 What was the time?
00:23:49 That was really good, 19.1.
00:23:52 [laughter]
00:23:54 Johnny, come on, was it?
00:23:56 Yeah.
00:23:57 What was his real time?
00:24:00 16.9.
00:24:02 16.9 seconds.
00:24:04 Big round of applause.
00:24:06 That was a great climb there, Willie.
00:24:08 Good job.
00:24:10 All right, so as I mentioned before,
00:24:12 the job of the High Rigger was one of the most dangerous in the forest,
00:24:15 but there was one that was even more dangerous,
00:24:18 and that was the job of the Log Driver.
00:24:20 So once the logs made it to the river,
00:24:22 they needed to be floated downstream to the sawmill.
00:24:25 So a Log Driver with his spiked boots and a long wooden pole
00:24:28 would get out on these floating logs and ride them down the river.
00:24:32 Now sometimes a small cabin strapped to these floating logs
00:24:35 would be this man's home for weeks at a time,
00:24:37 and that's where he earned himself the unfortunate nickname of River Rat.
00:24:41 As the trees traveled down the river,
00:24:43 sometimes they would get caught up on rocks or sharp bends in the river,
00:24:46 and our Log Driver would do his very best with his long wooden pole
00:24:49 to break these logs free,
00:24:51 but occasionally they would be so jammed up
00:24:53 that he would even resort to using a stick of dynamite
00:24:56 to just blasting the logs apart.
00:24:58 So as you can imagine, this was a very dangerous job.
00:25:01 I mean, dynamite aside, one false step
00:25:03 would land this man in the freezing cold river water
00:25:06 where the weight of his woolen clothes could pull him under,
00:25:09 he could drown, be crushed by logs, succumb to hypothermia.
00:25:12 Whoa, whoa, whoa!
00:25:14 I don't think I want to do this next event.
00:25:17 What do you mean?
00:25:18 Oh, come on, you make it sound so dangerous.
00:25:21 I'm sick and tired of coming out here,
00:25:23 risking life and limb for a complimentary show.
00:25:28 [laughter]
00:25:29 You kidding, you bunch of freeloaders?
00:25:31 Yeah, we could die of log crushings.
00:25:34 Willie, there is one log in this pond.
00:25:37 Oh, carpet burn?
00:25:40 [laughter]
00:25:41 Got carpet on.
00:25:43 What about hypothermia?
00:25:45 Hypothermia, are you serious?
00:25:47 Yeah, it's highly contagious.
00:25:49 It is not, but I'll tell you what, Johnny,
00:25:51 if you can spell hypothermia for all of these people,
00:25:54 you don't have to do the log roll.
00:25:56 Go ahead.
00:25:59 If I could spell, I wouldn't be a lumberjack.
00:26:02 I thought it.
00:26:03 Looks like we're moving on to the next event,
00:26:05 which just so happens to be my favorite event.
00:26:07 Oh, that's good, you can do it.
00:26:09 Not a chance, because it's the one where we get to see
00:26:11 the lumberjacks get wet.
00:26:13 [applause]
00:26:15 So we're going to get our lumberjacks out on this log here.
00:26:17 I'm not going to do it.
00:26:19 What are you doing?
00:26:20 Blowing that log clean out of the pond.
00:26:22 Willie, where did you get dynamite?
00:26:23 Wal-Mart.
00:26:24 Johnny, give me that.
00:26:26 Give me that.
00:26:28 I'm a rollback salesman.
00:26:30 Give me that, that's dangerous.
00:26:32 Give me that dynamite.
00:26:34 [screaming]
00:26:43 It's all right, folks.
00:26:44 Got the dynamite.
00:26:46 You've got--
00:26:47 I don't want to use it.
00:26:48 I don't want to throw it away.
00:26:49 Throw it away.
00:26:50 No, not that way.
00:26:51 Come on, just step on the wick.
00:26:53 It's not working.
00:26:54 Throw it in the water, then.
00:26:56 In the water?
00:26:57 Yeah.
00:26:58 No, not that water.
00:27:01 Well, I get confused.
00:27:02 [laughing]
00:27:04 Look out!
00:27:06 [explosion]
00:27:14 That was awesome.
00:27:16 That was so awesome.
00:27:17 Willie was in there.
00:27:19 Yeah, and that was everywhere.
00:27:22 Willie was a great lumberjack.
00:27:24 Yeah.
00:27:26 He was a dynamite guy.
00:27:29 He had an explosive personality.
00:27:32 We almost had a blast together.
00:27:34 Are you done?
00:27:35 Okay, I'm so sorry, folks.
00:27:37 Due to the loss of one of our lumberjacks,
00:27:39 we're not going to be able to continue with the show.
00:27:42 I guess that means we blew away the competition.
00:27:45 Johnny, this isn't funny.
00:27:47 How can we carry on here with just one lumberjack?
00:27:49 One lumberjack, and that's Johnny.
00:27:51 That means we win, right, Green?
00:27:53 Yeah!
00:27:56 Hold on, look, it's Willie.
00:27:57 He's alive!
00:27:59 [applause]
00:28:03 Willie, are you okay?
00:28:05 What?
00:28:07 I said, are you okay?
00:28:09 Do I look okay to you?
00:28:12 I just fell down a well.
00:28:14 I died right by my head.
00:28:18 This is my favorite shirt.
00:28:21 Yeah, and you wet your pants a bit, too.
00:28:23 Hang on, wait a minute.
00:28:24 We're just going to settle this on the log, okay?
00:28:27 Yeah, we'll get them on the log.
00:28:28 Right, Blue?
00:28:31 All right, as I was saying before,
00:28:33 there are not too many rules to the log roll.
00:28:35 Basically, they can't cross that central line,
00:28:37 and they can't touch each other.
00:28:38 But anything else goes, they can rock the log back and forth.
00:28:41 They can splash each other.
00:28:43 They're just trying to stay on their long ride.
00:28:45 No, no, no, no.
00:28:46 Put that down.
00:28:48 We're going to do the best two out of three
00:28:50 to let you go to our lumberjack.
00:28:52 [music]
00:29:04 Oh, it was a close one,
00:29:06 but I think Blue Mountain won that one.
00:29:08 What do you guys think?
00:29:12 Johnny, are you okay?
00:29:13 Oh, yeah.
00:29:14 Why are you still in the pond?
00:29:18 That's disgusting.
00:29:19 Get out of there.
00:29:21 All right, let's give these guys a round of applause.
00:29:23 [music]
00:29:29 [cheering]
00:29:32 Okay, well, that goes to Blue Mountain.
00:29:35 Oh, sorry, that goes to Green River.
00:29:38 Why don't you just stay in the water there?
00:29:39 Maybe it'll keep the swelling down.
00:29:42 Oh, my gosh.
00:29:43 Are you okay?
00:29:44 Yeah, boy.
00:29:46 Can you do a time-breaker for us here?
00:29:49 You've got one more.
00:29:51 All right, you've got one more row left.
00:29:52 Let's hear them one last time.
00:29:54 [music]
00:30:00 [cheering]
00:30:02 Thank you so much for coming out to the beach, Green River.
00:30:05 All right, well, I have to say,
00:30:06 the log rolling goes to Blue Mountain today.
00:30:09 Give a round of applause for both of our lumberjack boys.
00:30:12 [cheering]
00:30:17 Who is that?
00:30:21 Just go get mountain security, guys.
00:30:22 I'll get the shotgun.
00:30:24 Security.
00:30:27 Hey, buddy, what are you doing up there?
00:30:29 I'm freaking out.
00:30:33 I mean, why are you climbing the tree?
00:30:35 No, it's not my fault I'm up here, you know.
00:30:38 Whose fault is it?
00:30:39 Yeah, well, I was sitting in the bleachers earlier,
00:30:44 and I was talking to this lady.
00:30:46 It's her fault.
00:30:48 Why is it her fault you're climbing our tree?
00:30:51 Yeah, well, things were going good,
00:30:53 so I asked her out on a date, right?
00:30:56 You know what she said to me?
00:30:57 What?
00:30:58 Go climb a tree.
00:31:01 Okay, well, now you have, so come on back down.
00:31:04 No, I'm going all the way to the top.
00:31:08 Then she'll go out with me.
00:31:11 Doubt it.
00:31:12 Seriously, buddy, it's very dangerous up there.
00:31:15 Yeah, it's really tiring, too.
00:31:20 Hey, look!
00:31:22 [bell ringing]
00:31:28 There's been a cow up here.
00:31:31 I wonder how that happens.
00:31:33 No idea, but you rang the bell, so now you can come down.
00:31:36 No.
00:31:37 I'm almost at the top.
00:31:39 Oh, no.
00:31:40 Whoo!
00:31:41 I made it!
00:31:42 Oh, God.
00:31:44 Okay, you made it.
00:31:45 Now come down.
00:31:46 I've come down, lady.
00:31:49 It was a lot of hard work, right?
00:31:52 Can I take a quick break first?
00:31:55 Actually, that's not a bad idea.
00:31:56 Go ahead, take all of the time you need.
00:32:02 Because you're really making me nervous.
00:32:05 You think you're nervous?
00:32:07 [laughter]
00:32:10 Oh, no, lady.
00:32:12 What?
00:32:13 I've got a problem.
00:32:14 What's the problem?
00:32:16 I've got to go.
00:32:18 You've got to go.
00:32:20 Well, you really should have thought about that before you climbed a tree.
00:32:23 I didn't have to go before I climbed this tree.
00:32:26 This rope is really tight.
00:32:28 I want to get up a little bit.
00:32:30 Ah, no, I don't think you should mess with your--
00:32:32 [bell ringing]
00:32:33 No!
00:32:34 Look what you did!
00:32:35 That wasn't supposed to happen.
00:32:36 No kidding, you just dropped your rope.
00:32:39 Can you pass that back up to me?
00:32:42 No, I can't.
00:32:44 Great.
00:32:46 Oh, hey, guys, hey, quick, whip your phones out.
00:32:49 Check it out.
00:32:50 I'm just linking.
00:32:51 [laughter]
00:32:54 Yeah, that's not really a thing anymore.
00:32:57 Oh, that's bad.
00:32:58 It used to be so cool.
00:33:01 All right, hey, you guys continue on with your little show down there.
00:33:06 I've got the best seat in the house.
00:33:10 Yeah, the only problem with that is our show is finished,
00:33:13 and the next one isn't until 2 o'clock.
00:33:16 2 o'clock?
00:33:18 Your show schedule sucks.
00:33:21 Well, I better get a little bit more comfortable.
00:33:25 Yeah, we're probably going to have to call the fire department
00:33:27 or something to get you down from there.
00:33:29 Whoa, whoa, what are you doing?
00:33:30 You just dropped your spur.
00:33:32 No, I didn't.
00:33:33 Yeah, they're not mine.
00:33:36 After all, what good are those things to me
00:33:38 if I don't even have a rope, right?
00:33:41 Yeah, exactly.
00:33:42 I don't think you really understand the situation here.
00:33:44 You're 60 feet up a tree.
00:33:46 You have no rope, no spurs, no gloves.
00:33:50 No braids.
00:33:52 No kidding.
00:33:54 Ew, gross.
00:33:56 Hey, right here where I've been sitting,
00:33:59 there's been a dirty bird up here.
00:34:03 I can't sit in this stuff.
00:34:06 Well, you don't really have a choice, do you?
00:34:08 No, I'm going to stand up.
00:34:10 No, no, don't stand up.
00:34:12 I'm going to stand up.
00:34:13 No, that's a really bad idea.
00:34:15 Yeah.
00:34:16 Oh my gosh.
00:34:17 I can't look.
00:34:18 I can't look either.
00:34:19 You look!
00:34:23 Woo-hoo!
00:34:24 I did it, yeah!
00:34:28 I knew it.
00:34:29 I knew that.
00:34:31 Uh-oh.
00:34:32 Hey, do you hear that?
00:34:33 Hear what?
00:34:34 I got the aggressive case of the hiccups.
00:34:38 I've got to get rid of these things.
00:34:40 I don't want to fall.
00:34:41 How are you going to get down?
00:34:43 Oh, maybe I have something in here that would take my mind off them.
00:34:47 Maybe.
00:34:48 Yeah, maybe like a drink of water or something?
00:34:51 No!
00:34:53 No.
00:34:55 My parachute was in there.
00:34:58 Oh, no.
00:35:00 Anyways, maybe this will help.
00:35:03 Oh, that's actually pretty good.
00:35:07 Look at Bill.
00:35:10 Oh, oh, oh, no.
00:35:13 You dropped your round things.
00:35:17 No, I still got them.
00:35:19 What?
00:35:20 The hiccups.
00:35:21 I still got the hiccups.
00:35:22 Oh, you still got the hiccups.
00:35:23 Okay, well, why don't you try sitting down and holding your breath then?
00:35:26 Not a bad idea, lady.
00:35:28 That should help, right?
00:35:30 Or I have a better idea.
00:35:32 This will get rid of my hiccups for sure.
00:35:36 Oh, no.
00:35:38 What are you doing up there?
00:35:41 He's doing a headstand on a 60-foot tree.
00:35:43 Guys, go with that.
00:35:44 Give him a round of applause.
00:35:46 Because that is really, really stupid.
00:35:53 Lady.
00:35:54 Yeah.
00:35:55 You might want to take a few steps back.
00:35:57 I don't feel too good.
00:35:59 Oh, thanks.
00:36:01 Hey, that worked, though.
00:36:03 My hiccups are gone.
00:36:05 Wonderful.
00:36:06 Yeah.
00:36:07 Hey, you guys probably didn't know this about me, but I'm on vacation, you know.
00:36:12 On vacation?
00:36:14 Yeah.
00:36:15 I'm from, uh --
00:36:21 I'm from Eastern Canada, okay?
00:36:24 Yeah, Eastern Canada.
00:36:25 That doesn't surprise me at all.
00:36:29 I'm from Calgary.
00:36:34 So, anyway, since I'm already up here, you guys don't mind if I take a photo of you guys
00:36:38 so the folks back home can see it?
00:36:40 You want to take our picture?
00:36:41 Not you, just them.
00:36:43 Sure.
00:36:44 I'm just going to stand up again for a better shot.
00:36:47 Please, please be careful.
00:36:49 Hey, you guys got to smile real big for this one, okay?
00:36:53 It's going on Instagram.
00:36:56 You can follow me at ladieschoice92.
00:37:01 All right.

00:37:04 Trees.
00:37:08 Maybe he dropped your phone.
00:37:09 Do a panorama.
00:37:12 Can you guys squeeze in a little bit?
00:37:15 Not really, no.
00:37:16 All right, I'll just take a few steps back.
00:37:19 Don't step back.
00:37:20 [Cheering]

00:38:55 A 40-year-old waitress, to me these words did say,
00:39:01 "I see that you are a lager and not just a common bum,
00:39:08 'cause nobody but a lager stirs his coffee with his thumb."
00:39:14 My lover was a lager. There's none like him today.
00:39:21 If you'd pour whiskey on it, he would eat a bale of hay.
00:39:27 Well, he never shaved his whiskers from off of his horny hide.
00:39:34 He'd just drive them in with a hammer and bite them off inside.
00:39:41 My lover came to see me upon one freezing day.
00:39:47 He held me in a fond embrace which broke three vertebrae.
00:39:54 Well, he kissed me when we parted so hard that he broke my jaw.
00:40:01 I could not speak to tell him he'd forgot his Mackinac.
00:40:07 I saw my lager leaving, sauntering through the snow.
00:40:14 [train sounds]
00:40:43 [chatter]

00:45:48 So, good morning everyone. My name is Hrithvik. I am on the Wildlife Rangers here.
00:45:53 And along with me is Cleo. She is Cleo. She is a born owl. B-A-R-N.
00:45:59 And she is 12 years of age. Yeah, so she is quite mature.
00:46:07 So we are going to say something about her specialities.
00:46:12 And then you are welcome to take picture with her.
00:46:16 But let's talk like that. Sound is not good for her.
00:46:22 Like this kind of sound. So please don't clap. You can wave her after the talk.
00:46:28 Okay, so Cleo, first of all, we can say like that she is 100% non-vegetarian.
00:46:35 [laughter]
00:46:36 Yeah, so she doesn't feed any vegetables there.
00:46:40 So she used to feed like rodents, chipmunks, small squirrels.
00:46:45 So you can see the color patterns there.
00:46:47 Underneath it's like a white color with some dark patches.
00:46:51 Dark brown patches are there.
00:46:53 And over that we have like a brown color there.
00:46:57 So this brown color appears to be comparatively darker in case of the females.
00:47:02 In the males it's a little bit on the lighter end.
00:47:05 So these two colors are basically meant to camouflage them.
00:47:08 So once they just went for there to catch a rodent.
00:47:14 The rodent can't see her because of the color patterns of the white color against this sky pattern.
00:47:22 But she is not only the prey, she can be preyed on.
00:47:27 So like bald eagles and great horned owls actually preyed on her, on these barn owls.
00:47:34 So in order to get, I mean, just camouflage from their end, they have this color pattern at their back.
00:47:40 So you can imagine the bark of the trees and this one actually melts together.
00:47:45 Yeah, very similar.
00:47:47 Yeah, yeah, we will talk about that too.
00:47:49 He wants to do that.
00:47:52 So actually he is being hand raised.
00:47:54 And beforehand he was there as a birds in motion.
00:47:59 And then she retired from there.
00:48:01 And she is having her retirement life here as an ambassador of barn owl.
00:48:06 Or we can say like she is enjoying her life right now.
00:48:10 So if you just look at her face, it's the feathers are a little bit different.
00:48:15 And the heart shaped feathers are a little bit different.
00:48:18 It's called the facial disk.
00:48:20 Underneath this facial disk, they have two ear funnels.
00:48:24 Like we have the ears, but their ear funnels are a little bit asymmetric to each other.
00:48:29 So we can imagine like one ear in our one end and another one ear in our cheek.
00:48:33 Like that asymmetric is being there.
00:48:35 So it's a gift from the mother nature so that they can pinpoint the sounds from a long distance.
00:48:42 So it's been studied that they can have in a quiet environment,
00:48:47 they can actually figure out the heartbeat of the rodent from 10 feet away.
00:48:50 So right now, she can actually feel all of her heartbeat.
00:48:54 She can actually hear that out.
00:48:56 So it's like a gift from the mother nature.
00:48:58 We see like in case of the dogs, they do like this kind of the tilting.
00:49:02 Once we say some interesting facts, it's been given in built for them.
00:49:07 And then you can look at her eyes.
00:49:10 Her eyes are dark brown colored, though it might look black to you.
00:49:14 It's been dark colored so we can figure it out that she is nocturnal in nature.
00:49:19 So she used to play during the nighttime.
00:49:22 And the eyes are, eyeballs are relatively bigger ones.
00:49:26 So we can expect like if we consider that ratio in our eyes, it's like a big grapefruit.
00:49:32 So being on that eyes, it's really hard to just move the pupil from one end to another end.
00:49:38 So she can move her pupil from one end to another end.
00:49:41 She can see directly there.
00:49:44 In order to deal with that, she has an extra seven bones or vertebrae in her neck.
00:49:50 So we have seven vertebrae in our neck.
00:49:53 She has 14 vertebrae in her neck.
00:49:56 So because of the seven extra vertebrae, she can actually move her neck 270 degrees.
00:50:03 It's almost like at the back.
00:50:05 So she can move her neck to the 270 degree.
00:50:08 And then one of the very characteristic feature about the owl is that they are known for their silent flights.
00:50:14 So they, underneath their wings, they have their feathers which is being serrated.
00:50:19 It means it's been cut on there.
00:50:21 So that serrated means that whatever the sound is being produced, it will get on absorbed.
00:50:25 So owls are known for the silent flights and it's really hard for the rodents or the chipmunks to figure it out that any of the prey for them has been coming.
00:50:34 Lastly, we can talk about her claws.
00:50:37 This is the most powerful weapon she has.
00:50:39 We call it talons.
00:50:41 So these talons will actually generate the power and it's almost similar that we fall under a tone of the truck.
00:50:47 The same power she can generate.
00:50:50 So if you have any questions, you can ask me.
00:50:53 By the way, do you can figure out how much she will weigh today?
00:50:57 Not much.
00:50:59 Yeah, that's a good answer.
00:51:01 Anything?
00:51:04 Six pounds.
00:51:06 Great.
00:51:08 One pound.
00:51:10 Yeah, we took one pound and a little bit higher from there.
00:51:13 It's like 1.5 you can go approximately.
00:51:17 It's like 600 grams.
00:51:20 So she has bones which are hollow and whatever she eats means like the bones from the chipmunks or the feathers or all the things she just collected as a pellet in her gizzard and vomited out.
00:51:31 And that's what we consider as a pellet count.
00:51:34 So we have like that studies in schools also to just dissect the pellet and then figure it out what kind of the meal she's going to have or any of the owls going to have.
00:51:47 So to conclude my talk, we can say like that they feed on the rodents.
00:51:51 So barn owls are like have a blue concern here in BC and it's like almost endangered in Ontario.
00:51:58 So we have a request for all of us.
00:52:00 It's like that if you have the rodents or any mice in your backyard or in your barn, it's like please don't use any insecticide or pesticides because ultimately not only kill the bad sorry the rodents or the rat, but it also kill this creature also.
00:52:17 So it's like a little bit weird to being in the barn and she screams a lot.
00:52:23 That's our call actually.
00:52:24 She can't do any kind of the hooting sound or like that.
00:52:27 Her call is like a screaming so it's like a devil or the evil has been coming by.
00:52:31 But it's not like that.
00:52:32 She is really awesome.
00:52:33 Yeah, so that's why he's being termed as a barn owl.
00:52:37 And once again, like she is Cleo and 12 years of age.
00:52:41 Now, if you anybody of you interested, take picture with her.
00:52:45 You may welcome to take the picture.
00:52:47 But please keep in mind that we have like an 1115 lumberjack show.
00:52:51 So they have the sound system.
00:52:52 So we need to do it before that.
00:52:55 Good morning folks.
00:52:57 Welcome to Grass Mountain of Vancouver.
00:52:59 We have our very first lumberjack show of the day starting up in about five minutes.
00:53:03 So come on over, grab a seat and we'll get that started for you shortly.
00:53:08 [Music]

00:53:56 [Music]
00:54:08 [Music]
00:54:11 Collect that plug.
00:54:26 They then went for the hibernation.
00:54:29 And that is there in the right side.
00:54:32 You can see a green colored house.
00:54:35 That is their hibernation den for the last 15 years.
00:54:38 So they just went for the hibernation.
00:54:40 And very interesting to note here is that in the hibernation, once they went for the hibernation,
00:54:45 they just don't bother to eat anything, neither to drink anything, not to go for the washroom.
00:54:50 So for this time of the season, they went for the hibernation in November 21st, 2022 and wake up on May 3rd, 2023.
00:54:59 So it's considered one of the third longest of their hibernation, almost like five and a half months.
00:55:05 So once they come out from their hibernation, it's like they need to kick start their metabolism.
00:55:12 So in the wild, they're going to eat like sun cabbage, but they are not fond of the sun cabbage right now.
00:55:18 So they used to have like Roman lettuce.
00:55:21 So what we found for the last 15 years is that they are not the true hibernators.
00:55:26 Rather like that of bats or the chipmunks.
00:55:30 So they used to just lower down their heartbeat by two thirds.
00:55:35 They just lowered down their BMR rate or the basal metabolic rate by two thirds.
00:55:40 But they keep awake each and every day.
00:55:42 So they just keep on stretching their same, yawning, cuddling over one another.
00:55:47 And one of the very interesting fact is that grinder used to have like sleepwalk at that time.
00:55:53 So if you are more interested to learn about these, you can browse to browsemountain.com and can see the beer cams they're on.
00:56:01 So we have put the cameras and infrared cameras to figure out their movements throughout the 365 days or throughout the year.
00:56:09 Though these two are the male bears, one of the interesting facts is being found in case of the female bear.
00:56:15 It's called the delayed implantation.
00:56:17 So by this time of the year, the male and the female in the wild will bond together for the mating.
00:56:23 Once the mating is being done, it's up to the female that how many cubs she will have during her hibernation.
00:56:29 Rather to say about the hibernation, we prefer to call it as a torpor stage or the dormant stage.
00:56:34 Because the grizzlies are not the true hibernator.
00:56:38 So if she is being fed enough, then she might have in certain instances three or four cubs during her torpor stage.
00:56:45 But if she is not being fed enough during her hyperfacial or the overeating phase, she have the ability to flush out all her eggs.
00:56:52 And at that season, she might not have any of like a cubs.
00:56:57 So finally, we will talk about their lifespan.
00:57:00 So lifespan for the wild grizzlies one are like 20 to 25 years.
00:57:07 So they are right now 22 years old, both of them.
00:57:10 So we may consider that they are almost live their life.
00:57:15 But here on being in captivity with no competition for the food, bed to take care, almost being in a medical insurance.
00:57:21 So we can expect finger crossed another 15 to 20 years along with them.
00:57:26 So if you have any questions, you can ask me.
00:57:30 One of the very interesting facts I want to tell about to differentiate between the brown bears and the black bears is that
00:57:38 in the brown bears, you can see a hump beside the neck and that hump actually full of the muscle.
00:57:43 It creates the power or the generates the power for their forearms.
00:57:47 So they are known for digging and have the power in their forearms.
00:57:51 The black bears doesn't have this hump in their end.
00:57:55 They have the power in their hind limbs.
00:57:57 And that's why they can use to climb the trees.
00:58:00 These guys can't climb the trees once they've been grown up.

01:07:30 >> And then we're gonna head up the Capilano Suspension Bridge, which is about 450 feet long.
01:07:36 A lot of fun.
01:07:37 Most people are a little bit scared when they first come, but once they do it, they're pretty proud of themselves after.
01:07:42 >> All right, it's time to conquer some fears, fears of height specifically.
01:07:47 Let's head out on the bridge.
01:07:49 I was a bit nervous coming out on the bridge, but I was told that it's strong enough to hold 96 elephants.
01:07:55 So I feel pretty secure.
01:07:58 That being said, I'm not gonna lean over too far, just a little.
01:08:01 Whether it's raining or it's sunny, it's so beautiful here.
01:08:05 I'm going for a cliff walk.
01:08:06 This walking bridge is attached to the cliff.
01:08:09 You can see, actually.
01:08:12 It's attached right there.
01:08:14 It's kind of cool to be hanging off the side of a cliff.
01:08:16 [MUSIC]
01:08:22 We're gonna hop on the sky ride and go up Grouse Mountain.
01:08:26 The view of Vancouver is incredible.
01:08:28 >> One of the largest harbors on the West Coast.
01:08:32 >> Holy cow, it's a grizzly bear.
01:08:35 >> Here are a few quick tips for hiking the grind.
01:08:39 Number one, the trail can be pretty busy, so stick to your right and pass on your left.
01:08:43 If you're hiking in a group, try to stay in a single line so you don't take up the entire width of the trail.
01:08:48 Number two, if you're visiting Vancouver and only some people in your group want to hike the grind,
01:08:52 those that don't want to hike it can take the gondola up and everyone can meet at the top.
01:08:57 Number three, you're not allowed to descend the grind,
01:09:00 so most hikers buy a download ticket and ride the gondola down.
01:09:03 >> On to activity number two, the zip line course.
01:09:06 >> The Grouse course has five different zip lines and you can reach speeds of up to 70 kilometers an hour.
01:09:11 >> Let's make like jackets and zip off.
01:09:13 [ Music ]
01:09:38 >> We're now about to get on our fastest zip line yet, and we're going to reach speeds of over 70 kilometers an hour.
01:09:44 >> Hands on the bar, knees up.
01:09:49 >> The Bears.
01:09:53 >> There's a handy trail with bear prints that we can follow to wherever we need to go.
01:09:57 >> This is Brynder and this is Kula from Bella Kula.
01:10:01 >> The two resident grizzlies on Grouse.
01:10:04 >> We just chatted with one of the rangers here to get the story on the Bears.
01:10:08 The Bears are in captivity because they were orphaned when they were really, really little,
01:10:11 and they were not able to survive on their own.
01:10:14 Both Bears were independently rescued in two different parts of B.C.
01:10:18 They were rescued by forest workers and brought to a reserve.
01:10:21 From the reserve, arrangements were made to build an enclosure for them here on Grouse.
01:10:26 Normally, two male grizzlies would not be able to live together,
01:10:29 but because these two were put together at a very, very young age, they're living their lives together here on Grouse Mountain
01:10:35 where they've been for the last 22 years.
01:10:38 We were also able to check out the bird show with the beautiful bald eagle named Hercules and the bray horned owl named Cleo.
