00:02 >> Joe, one of the big updates as camp began last Tuesday was Justin Herbert
00:08 inking a monumental deal with the LA Chargers.
00:11 Becoming the richest quarterback and player from an annual average salary
00:17 basis in NFL history, $52.5 million,
00:20 a five year contract extension worth 262.5 overall.
00:26 So now the question is Joe, does the optimism with Herbert entering year
00:30 number four match the results we will see in 2023?
00:35 Yes, finally the bolts in the postseason last year, but
00:38 it's probably a game of Charger fans would want to forget.
00:41 27-0, a lead for LA against Jacksonville in Duval County.
00:47 They squander it, the Jags come all the way back to take that super wild card
00:51 Saturday night game against the LA Chargers.
00:54 Here are the odds for the bolts entering 2023, nine and a half to win total.
01:00 The over has the juice, they are favored slightly at minus 115 to make the playoffs
01:05 and 11 to one number to win the AFC championship.
01:09 Right now it is the sixth best price on the FanDuel sports book.
01:13 It is four behind though, the Chiefs, the Bills and
01:16 the Bengals that tier of three in the AFC.
01:19 So on one question Tuesday, Joe, to you,
01:23 the question is how far are the Chargers and
01:26 Justin Herbert from the AFC's tier of that top three?
01:29 >> Well, listen, I think Herbert is, you know what you're gonna get from him,
01:36 you know what you're gonna get from this offense.
01:38 It's never been a question since Herbert got drafted and
01:40 has been there about the offense.
01:42 The question has always been about the defense and
01:45 the reason they haven't had any success here, Ben, in the postseason,
01:50 isn't because of Herbert in the offense, it's because that defense is trash.
01:55 And isn't that the reason why Staley got the job?
01:58 Isn't he supposed to be a defensive, they are trash.
02:03 Now, are they gonna be trash again this year?
02:05 Well, that's a million dollar question.
02:07 If you wanna know whether or not the Chargers are gonna have any success and
02:11 be able to take that next step, it lies not on the offensive side of the ball.
02:15 It lies on the defensive side of the ball.
02:18 And will they be able to stop the run?
02:20 Can you get enough out of those very overpriced defensive linemen and
02:25 members of the secondary?
02:26 Can they get them to elevate and stay healthy?
02:29 That's a lot.
02:30 I will say this though, four straight years now,
02:33 I think since Herbert's been drafted,
02:35 they are yet to hit the over on their preseason win total.
02:39 They have not done it yet.
02:41 I don't know that they do it again this year here, Ben.
